Just did the Ghozirra boss for the elemetal takeover phase of cata. there are some hydra's (spawns) in the pool near the boss. not tamable though. It was worth a shot.

/sigh my last request from blizz for a hunter pet is any hyrda! (just make it a cool one ) hyrdas would defenatly make my top 5 fav pets! but i guess i can still have some hope that we might see one tameable b4 cataclysm /crossfingers!

I think that the reason, perhaps, that hydras have not been made tameable is that they are water living creatures. The only exception to that rule seems to be crocodiles, and they do hang out on land in real life after all (in varying degrees). Hydras don't really seem to be made for walking, so to speak. They look sort of unbalanced on land. Don't mean to stomp on anyone's hope at all, this is just my theory.

What about the ones in Dead Mire of Zangar that are always on land?

Dead Mire got drained of water, leaving its inhabitants stranded.

That said, hydras have land animations, and can emerge from the water, so I doubt this is the reason tbh.

If I remember correctly, they can live in land OR water. It's mentioned in the hunter Sunken Temple quest.
