Well what you want is survivabilty at your lvl. Spec towards the Heart of the Rhino talent, which increases the healing done to your pet via mend pet/heal spells (mend pet really becomes MUCH more effective with this talent). To get there you will have to take the stamina buff talents which work wonders in terms of survival as well. Charge is another great skill, it gives your pet mobility, as well as debuffing your target in terms of speed and health.

Gorillas are pretty good, at your lvl bears, turtles, crocolisks and boars might do a bit better... but believe me when I say that it isnt that big a deal. I would simply pick the tenacity pet family I like best. You don't want to lvl another 39 with a pet you don't really like, just because their family skill is marginally better.

If you do want to powerlvl all the way to 80 though, a bear is your best bet. Not only is it's family skill the best, but it eats pretty much anything (just like a boar) so you can feed it with most of the crap you find of mobs.
