Pets that can swim (and some that can't)
So yeah, you'll be spending a lot of time swimming in Vashj'ir. Here's a quick list on what's worthy, and which you should leave on dry land.
*****Cunning*****
Bats - swim like exactly like they fly.
Birds of Prey - swim exactly like they fly.
---Exception--- Brown Hawk and Black Crow - swimming just like Carrion Birds.
Chimera - neutral swimmers. They still fly underwater, but it's a tiny bit more of a paddle.
Dragonhawks - definitely swim instead of fly when underwater. The motion is a lot smoother, and it's obvious it's meant to be done in water as opposed to air. =)
Nether Ray - Same as the dragonhawks.
Ravager - They do a cute swim animation with their limbs flailing! Not sure how this would get the job of 'swimming' done, but they do seem to try so hard.
Serpent - These guys are pro swimmers. They writhe through the water, using their hoods as sort of pectoral fins.
Silithid - These guys make sort of a galloping jump through the water, but it's very cutely done.
---Exception - Silithid Tank Boss - No swim animations at all.
Spiders
---Bone Spiders and Mine Spiders - ...nice swimming animation! They gather their legs beneath them and push the water away, using their thorax as sort of an air ballon. ...shudder...
---Tarantulas and Giant Spiders - No swimming animation.
Spore Bat - no change between flight and swim.
Wind Serpent - These are great swimmers! They fold their wings against their bodies, and slide through the water like their big cousins the Serpents.
*****Ferocity*****
Carrion Birds - Suprisingly good swimmers! They use their wings to scoop the water behind them, sort of like they are related to penguins or something. Maybe seals.
---Exception - Northrend Condors - No swim animation at all.
Cats - Good swimmers, despite hating it. They do a basic paddle motion.
Core Hounds - Super awesome doggie paddle!
---Exception - Drakeadon - No swim animation.
Devilsaurs - Super awesome swimmers, despite tiny arms! They flail their tails back and forth, and paddle forward with the large feet, while the arms flap hilariously.
Hyenas - Strong swimmers. Basic paddle animation.
Moths - Neutral swimmers. Same flapping animation, but slower underwater.
Raptors - Same sort of animation as the devilsaurs, but less hilarious.
Spirit Beasts - This is based on the particular animal.
Tallstrider - Great swimmers. They paddle with their legs while the wings flap and they bob their heads.
Wasps - Swim just like they run.
Wolves - Good swimmer. Basic paddle animation.
*****Tenacity*****
Bears - Great swimmers. They have a modified paddle animation, where they hold their heads in a vertical position, which is more natural to real bears.
Boars - They have a very jerky sort of swim motion...not the greatest in terms of natural looking paddles.
Crabs - They have a swishing motion using their big and little claws. Cute!
Crocolisk - Great swimmers. They tuck up all of their feet and swish their tails side to side.
Gorillas - Funny swimmers. They act as if their belly is filled with helium, holding in front of them as they push the water behind them with all four feet.
Rhinos - They have a basic swim animation, except that they act as if they're trying to hold their horn out of the water.
Scorpid - Good swimmers, but the motion is hard to describe. The legs flail, and the tail swishes up and down for forward propulsion.
Turtles - These guys are old hats at swimming. The shell float, and they paddle forward with all four legs going like windmills.
Warp Stalkers - These guys swim in sort of the same fashion as crocolisk, but the animation is different.
Worms - They swim just like serpents, but much more smoothly and without the help of 'pectoral fins'. =D
*****Coming Soon*****
Beetles - No swim animations.
Dogs
---Mastiffs - Swim awkwardly, since the base model is that of a saberworg.
---Demon dogs & Magehunters - No swimming animation.
Foxes - They swim just like hyena, which is to say they swim well indeed!
Monkeys - Swim pretty well, in sort of a weak butterfly stroke.
Shale Spiders - Neutral swimmers, as their animation sends them sort of lunging forward. =|
Yes, I know some of them are "No duh." but some of them came as a surprise, like the carrion birds! Too bad they don't come in white. =)

Re: Pets that can swim (and some that can't)
Hm, I only used the drakeadon to test it. >_> Hold on, I'll go check again.
EDIT - Ok, my bad, the drakeadon doesn't swim but the core hound does. Super awesome!

Ya you need to check all models. Spiders swim but the tarantula models do not.

Rhinos kind of glide underwater with their teeny legs. xD It's very cute! They're attempting to make their horns look like shark fins to grief the unsuspecting.
Do the new crabs have the same animation as the old crabs? Just curious, since the new ones have one claw that's bigger than the other and wasn't sure if that changed anything.

Could you test, in particular, Silithid Bosses and (if you have it) the Silithid Swarmer?

Re: Pets that can swim (and some that can't)
I'm not sure why we need to leave something on land just cause it doesnt have a swimming animation. ^^; You might wanna clarify on your first post that its about animations, not actual usefulness cause it comes off like 'oh you shouldnt use this cause it cant swim right'.
Neat list, other than that little tidbit.

Re: Pets that can swim (and some that can't)
Some updates:
Carrion Birds -- Normal and Outland carrion birds have the nice swim animation, but Parrots and Northrend condors do not have a special animation for swimming.
Spiders -- Spiked spiders (listed in WMV as "giantspider") have no swim animation.
Crabs -- Deep Sea Crabs use essentially the same swimming animation as the normal ones. The clipping is particularly bad on them, as one claw seems to phase through the other. Shame, because I love the new crab skins. I'm going to tame it anyway.

I don't think the first sentence was supposed to be taken seriously. ;D It was meant in jest. ^^Taluwen wrote:I'm not sure why we need to leave something on land just cause it doesnt have a swimming animation. ^^; You might wanna clarify on your first post that its about animations, not actual usefulness cause it comes off like 'oh you shouldnt use this cause it cant swim right'.

Re: Pets that can swim (and some that can't)
Hard to tell in text. It came off as serious to me(til i realized she was probably kiddin) and there should be a disclaimer somewhere so people really dont think it to be serious and think those without animations are useless. People read this forum a lot so we dont wanna give the wrong information or impression. ^^;Vephriel wrote:I don't think the first sentence was supposed to be taken seriously. ;D It was meant in jest.

Sorry, I tend to be deathly serious. u_u' I'm not so good at making things look like a joke unless I surround it by clown horns and confetti.
Ty swordoath, for checking these while I napped. =) However, parrots are out of the Birds of Prey family, which I checked already. I'll change the others though, so ty!swordoath wrote:Some updates:

The big bug bosses don't swim at all, but the swarmers are scorpions, so yeah, they flail.Raydex-of-the-dawn wrote:Could you test, in particular, Silithid Bosses and (if you have it) the Silithid Swarmer?

Re: Pets that can swim (and some that can't)
I get a kick out of seeing any pet that doesn't look like it would make much of a swimmer tearing through the water with Dash/Dive.
I think I like wind serpents and warp stalkers the most, though. Wind serpents for the coolness, and warp stalkers for that silly-looking dog paddle they do while stationary (I park my Gezzarak in the water whenever I go fishing for the sake of seeing it, and toss her the unneeded fish I catch for added amusement value).

You're right, that was my oversight. I'm a little tired from earlier today and I goofed up on the families.Jangalian wrote:However, parrots are out of the Birds of Prey family, which I checked already. I'll change the others though, so ty!

Nice list.
It bugs me no end that they still haven't gotten a swim for the tarantula model yet. I dunno, but I find it so infuriating for some reason.

Re: Pets that can swim (and some that can't)
Owls flap slower when they swim It's a much smoother movement so is slightly different from in the air. Also for Scorpids I've described it as "AUGH MY MASTER IS DROWNING MEEE!" which seems wierdly approriate.
My main's a Druid so I of course love critters. That counts for something right? Right?
