Jiaphyon's Mission [WARNING: EXTREMELY IMAGE HEAVY!!!]

So as a lot of you probably know by now, I've had a little red hyena as my favorite pet for a very long time now. At level 34, back when I was a noobish hunter who didn't really know what she was doing, I stormed the Scarlet Monastery solo and after over an hour's worth of work and blowing a special immunity potion that in retrospect I should have saved for later, I got myself a Scarlet Tracking Hound. I named him Jiaphyon, which means "laughing death" in drow, and he stuck with me from then on. From level 34 to level 80 he was my constant, loyal leveling companion. We did everything together...Azeroth, BC and WotLK content.

Cataclysm brings a lot of amazing new stuff, but it also means the Scarlet Tracking Hound is being replaced by a red mastiff. While I agree that the Mastiff fits the Monastery much better than a red hyena, I was devastated to learn my loyal companion Jiaphyon would be turning into one of these dogs come the Shattering. It wasn't even just a skin change; it was a whole FAMILY change, a whole MODEL change. His very identity would have been completely destroyed by this.

I was not ready to give up my closest companion throughout the game, so I came up with a solution...and today, I acted on it and took some screenshots. Now I'll share my little story. For an added kick, this happened to come up on my playlist right at the end, which nearly tore my poor heart to pieces :(

Okay. Here we go.

Silinrul and Jiaphyon headed down to Tanaris to investigate the Elemental Attack situation further. Elementals have been popping up everywhere, and everyone on Azeroth is desperate to find the source. The four elemental generals of sorts have been found, but there could be still more hiding in mysterious and powerful places, and Silinrul was reminded of that strange door that seemed to conceal something important...

Silinrul and Jia saw several other elemental attacks along their way across the desert, only reaffirming how dangerous the situation was becoming.
Image
Image

Spurred on by the dangerous attacks, they hurried across the barren desert as fast as they could.
Image
Image
Image

They found a few old landmarks to go by, and contemplated the ruins that had been left behind long ago in the desert. Would these attacks become so dangerous their own homes turn into ruins that would in turn be absently contemplated by some other being centuries from now?
Image

And at last...they reached the strange door to the place only known vaguely as 'Uldum.'
Image
Image
Image

Silinrul knew what had to be done. With the attacks everywhere, it was imperative that she, as an experienced combatant, offer as much help as she could to the growing problems, defending the cities and helping in combat. But she also needed to keep an eye out on possible hints and clues that could very well lead to the protection of her people. She needed to be in too many places at once, and couldn't manage it by herself. But Jiaphyon, the loyal hyena who had stayed by her side and protected her from hundreds if not thousands of dangers, could help her with that.

Image
Image
Image

And then he darted off over the dunes, weaving carefully between the sand and stones just like he always did with her when they were on a mission of subtlety, and soon disappeared from sight.

Image

Silinrul knows she has to get back to the cities, to help with the defenses...but for a moment, she lets herself pause, and think about a week from now, when she can finally return for her friend.

Image

And now....all that's left to do is wait. :(

Awwwwww you made a whole awesome post about it!!! What a great idea, I wish I'd thought to do the same when I dropped Rancid off this morning.

Thanks so much for sharing, this was wonderful!

Honestly, as someone who has let go of pets in the past and came up with little stories like this, I can say it actually adds a lot of character to them. I feel more bonded to some of the pets that I've created backstories for (like Kevin), all due to having to release them at some point and get them back later. ^^

*cries* That reminds me of Orpheus's rebirth as Chatter the second time, especially since he was mad at me and tested my love and loyalty before coming home. That four hour camp was one of the most painful I'd ever done.

I don't have the words to properly express how moving this tribute was. *salutes Jia* Your mom will come for you soon! This is just the second part of the journey you two are sharing.

I love your storie and the pictures. It warms my heart when a bond that strong is formed between a hunter and her/his pet. I feel the same way with Müsli. Hopefully you will get your companion back wendsday.

That made me all teary eyed. Very well done.

Hard to explain how special our pets become; my pink tallstrider is THE most important thing in WoW to me. I'd drop all of my alts to keep him, if I ever had to (crazy circumstances). When our stables glitched out empty, and Gus was gone, I called my bf crying telling him to be careful with his hunter because I'd lost Gus. Lost some spirit beasts too but no one mattered as much as Gus. No pet ever will. Loooooots of memories with that goofy pink thing...

I agree, sad as it was my connection to Jia feels that much stronger now. I can't wait to get my baby back!

Indeed, we'll make it through Cata too! I'm glad it was moving, because it practically killed me to do it. But it's okay, I'll get him back!

I definitely intend to. Silinrul is going to be worried as hell when the Shattering hits and Jia is still out there! As soon as she can leave Darnassus, she intends to head straight down there and find her baby again, no matter what.

I know, the music kills me :( It was totally random too, it just came up on my playlist! As for writing, I'm sure you could do it :D A lot of this was spur-of-the-moment, once I got into character.

I know. I told one of my friends about how I sent Jia on his mission last night, and he just didn't get why I was attached to so many pixels. But Jia is important to me, especially since I solo'd on Silinrul for so long and so she kinda gained her own RP personality while I played. If the stables were suddenly reduced to 1 tomorrow for some unexpected reason, I'd give up all my other pets just to keep Jia, even the spirit beasts. Maybe it didn't take days of camping to get him, but he's the most special pet to me on Silinrul. So I can totally understand your connection to Gus the pink tallstrider :)

Thanks for the responses and the support everybody :)

Wow Vel, I loved this story. Are you going to go get Jiaphyon back in Tanaris? (Rarespawn with same coat called Slaverjaw)

It'll be over soon and you'll be reunited shortly :)

That is exactly the plan, and the reason I released him there :) The natives in the area have seen a red hyena roaming the desert and named it Slaverjaw because they'd never seen it before. It's actually my Jia, keeping tabs just like I told him to even through the Shattering (now that's loyalty) :)

Nice! So Jia's working some good undercover, creating another alibi to help overthrow the Pirate threat perhaps? (goblins and gnomes together attack the pirates come shattering :)

Wait are you on Nesingway Alliance side? My hunter can help you look for Jia later tonight if needed while I go tame a mysterious beast certain dark lore has talked about for ages. They call this mythodical creature 'Seagull'

I am indeed Nesingwary Alli side :D The search company is most appreciated if you like!

And yes, I have heard of these mythical 'seagull' creatures. Epic tame, right there!

He just sits there, not moving.. waiting for you to come and bring him back home after his mission. Ill keep an eye out for him for you ^.^

I know it says southmoon ruins on Petopia, but every time I try to look him up on wowhead or something I can't find him or get a map. But I will look for these bones and keep an eye out for him :D

Glad you are all enjoying the little rp session XD

I know exactly what you mean. I cried buckets when I abandoned my first long-term pet back in BC, gave him a big sendoff with RP text and everything (nothing as elaborate as what you gave Jia)....and then I got ganked directly after releasing him, which only added to the heartbreak. This took me right back there. But I got Orpheus out of the deal, and I am more attached to him than I ever was to the original pet I'd given up to make room for him (given, in a different incarnation, but still, it's Orpheus). Stay strong, Jia will be there. :D And your friendship will truly be stronger once he returns to your side.

Guess I won't be taming on Kallimon today then! That said, I'm in the area as well and will be sure to stop by to check on Jia if I make it over to Nesingwary. There will be Much Flailing if I can find him. ;)

Whoops, seems I got something in my eye there. Ahem.

Wonderful story, and definitely one of the best excuses I've ever heard for a "forced" retame. Thank you VERY much for sharing (complete with screenshots, glee!)

Such a nice story (boyfriend is pestering me about why I'm sniffling), I know you'll get Jia back soon. I really wish they had changed the ID, would have saved so much heartache....
It's going to be so strange logging on tonight and when Sersallia goes to grab Meza after hearing about the trouble in Kalimdor and she wont be there (working on her story right now). May your spawn times be swift and your tame go unhindered.

Haha...I figured instead of throwing a fit over it and railing at Blizzard--which really doesn't deserve it in this case, since the change was justified--I would just make the new mob my own. It seems to have worked, or at any rate I don't feel disappointed about having to change skins.

A fellow hyena lover! I know you understand then too :D I wish they had changed the ID, but not much we can do about it, so...this works okay as a backup plan.

Good luck getting your old friend back, too :) I'm camping mine as we speak! (Type...whatever)
