Blue Dragonhawk Solo Taming Tricks

So you're looking to tame a blue dragonhawk, but none of your friends will actually come with you to the Sunwell. Have no fear, for this beauty is absolutely solo-tamable at level 80!

Preparation
1. Absolutely bring at least one corehound with you. If you do everything right, you'll only need the one, but it's very nice to have backups. If you intend to keep your corehound, then make absolutely sure you have at least one active pet slot open.
2. Bring haste potions.
3. Stack as much haste and stamina as you can. For me, this meant wearing all PvE gear, changing out my trinkets for the Brewfest ones. I also put up a blessing of forgotten kings and nibbled on one of my spare fish feasts. (This may not be strictly necessary, but it's nice to have.) If you're an engineer, rock the haste enchant on your gloves.
4. Find a random person to group with you in a raid for a few minutes.

The Tame
1. Wait for the mechanical patrol to circle past the entrance. If you're looking into the front courtyard from the entrance, the patrol should be around the 6 or 7 o'clock position when you slip past to get near the closest trash pack. You could always kill it, but this way worked for me.
2. Get your corehound out and activate ancient hysteria. It lasts for 40s, so you have lots of time to work with, but you'll still want to move fast.
3. Abandon or dismiss your corehound.
4. If you feel daring (I didn't), launch an ice trap (or frost grenade, if you're an engineer) into the trash pack ahead of you, then very quickly....
4. Pop your haste potion and deterrence, plus any other haste buffs you have (engineering glove enchant, herbalist lifeblood, troll berserking, etc.). Tame beast and pray.
5. You will almost certainly die here. I didn't even see my tame complete in order to get a feign off. Even if I had, the trash would have just killed my dragonhawk and then re-aggroed me when I stood up.
6. Res and check your active pets to see if your dragonhawk is there. If not, you won't have an insanity debuff, so you can try again in a few minutes. If so, then congratulations on your new dragonhawk!

Thanks to Sigrah for the tips on ice trap usage and the engineering glove enchant, and Acherontia for the frost grenade suggestion!

We won't go into how many attempts it took me to realize that "gee, maybe I *do* need to have a corehound for this." ;)

Nice guide. Two things I would add to it:

1) If you're an engineer, use your haste glove tinker.

2) You can use your trap launcher to put a frost trap between you and the mobs. For me, this meant the difference between success and failure (though I didn't use a core hound). Although it didn't stop the spell casters, it did keep the melee mobs at bay long enough.

Good thinking! I hadn't bound anything (like abandoning my corehound) and was basically doing this by the seat of my pants, so ended up skipping the whole trapping thing. Will add that. :)

I did it without a corehound, but I popped a haste potion and trapped one of the mobs. I died just a moment after the tame finished but hey. Still got my hawk. And yes, do stack some stam and haste. Sunwell mobs still hit like bloody trucks. x_x

Great tips! Here is how I did it.

I waited for the patrol, then I ran up to the first group. As soon as I aggro'd them I popped deterrence, then ran past them and FD'd right at the base of the tree. Waited 2 mins for my deterrence to come off of CD, brought myself out of FD. Where I was at, I wasn't aggroing anything, so I took my time and shot off a frost trap and hit my macro.

/use Potion of speed
/use 10
/cast Deterrence

Then I cast tame beast and now I have a blue dragonhawk!

Totally off-topic, but I love the name of your Dragonhawk.

That was such a bad-ass warship :D

if you manage to freeze the dragonhawk from a distance and you use the snake trap? will the aggro the other mobs for a sec?

Possibly. But you'd be just as likely to pull the other trash pack too, or at least my snakes would. ;)

Stupid noob question, how to go in the Sunwell?
At the entrance I am told I have to be in a raid group...

Thanks for the guide anyway!

Just borrow someone for a raid for a moment, then they can drop once you're in. I snagged someone, trapped 'n haste potted, tamed, died like Heroes' ratings, ressed and went on about my day.

Ok, I have found someone to group, I have died a few times, but I had only used the one haste buff I had on hand... next time i'll go fully prepared hopefully with one friend!

The first time I went in I had left the group at the entrance, but I was told I would be teleported outside in 1 min... the second time I stayed in group...

For the record, there's no point using Deterrance. You won't parry a thing while channeling Tame Beast.

I'm about to go try and help a guildy tame this fella, thanks for all the info!

Edit--he managed by rooting them all with a frost grenade before the tame, if anyone here is an engineer--there's a thought.
