For a long time I've liked the idea of having a bear, but never really managed to find one I liked the look of. After some pondering it came to me - it's because wow bears have an unnatural crouch, causing the forequarters to be lowered and giving them the "big bear butt" look; as below you can see a side by side of what I'm talking about. It's fine for bears to crouch as part of their combat stance (combined with regular and standing pose attacks), but when they're idle, their backs should slope upward from the hindquarters to the shoulders, not the other way around.

Uh you do know not all bears are built the same? That's a Grizzly Bear. One of the BIGGEST bears, if not THE biggest and they are built differently than like say a black bear.

And honestly the model never made me never had a bear, it was the colors. I never liked black bears face, grey bears face was to blue and it was always used on diseased/rabid creatures, for the most part whenever I saw it. Brown and brown always seemed so dull. White was really the only skin I liked but ofc the only white bears under lv 50 are....

in Dun Mogor or whatever.

Seriously I looked at polar bears and black bears and they when standing were not standing like that Grizzly, they were standing in a straight line nearly, or a bit sloped down, if they had chosen to instead be looking down at the ground instead of up/about a bit. That hump on the Grizzly shoulders is, if I remember right, MUSCLE >->

Tho yes bear models could probably use an upgrade from trundle trundle to something a bit better.

Actually I like their big, cuddly bear butts since it's what I see of them when they're next to me. And I do see a ton of them on my server. Personally I just want more color choices that aren't diseased.

First of all Ryai, if you're going to use a single generic model for all bears then the grizzly makes the most sense, if you're going for ferocity > cuteness.

That being said, in fact black and polar bears still have noticeably different builds than the wow bear. Again, this is simply because wow bears stay in perma-crouch, which real bears do not.

I've added them to the "lineup" below so you can see what I mean:

I think another factor would be their run animation - at least, that's what has kept me from getting a bear. They tumble forward in a round, big butted animation. Bears have slimmer hips, not an orb for a back end.
That, and they're bloody tiny. >.> Bears shouldn't be kitten sized.
However, the "rolly polly" look is what many hunters actually like about them. They're very teddy bear like.

Well, for anyone who prefers the "Charmin" look, I suppose I could see the attraction...

Uh you don't know bears very well, do you? Yes Grizzlies are 'Fierce', but they are the easiest to get to stop attacking you. You know the age old play dead for bear attacks? Evidently it won't stop Black Bears- I've seen a few doccumentaries and the guys admit they'd rather face a Grizzly than a Black Bear.

Also, Polar Bears are just as deadly/fierce, If not more so. Looks aren't everything.

Uh did I even say they were like the WoWbear exactly? I just said that Grizzlies and all bears, have different builds because of different climates.

No I see what you mean and I think you ignored the fact I said wow bears could use with a few touch ups, but now looking at the line up, it seems you overlooked the fact that the other reason WoWbears are sloped is the fact their front legs seem to be shorter than they should be. Ergo, the slope.

Shortened forelegs or crouch, you end up with the same effect - front end too low / hind end exaggerated / etc.

And as for ferocity, we're just talking about looks here...

Ryai, I don't think he meant that Grizzly bears ARE ferocious... Just that they might LOOK like it. How they act and how they look are completely different.

The crouch can be seen in most WoW creatures, actually. Look at cats - they look short-legged and low to the ground because they're always in Super Stealth Mode. Wolves, too.

Honestly id just like the quest bear in ashenvale to become tameable he has a elf druid black look

Anyway--yeah, they strike me as definitely being set on a polar bear frame. They have long, narrow heads and muzzles, a streamlined hunched figure and shortish fur.



That's not to say it's "right," as they've set black and grizzly bears etc on the same model, but I doubt it's a priority for them to make Grizzly models etc. Someone should try modding a Blizz one, see how it looks.

Yes but those animals are at least crouching in a manner that keeps the shoulders up and prominent compared to the rest of the body, unlike wow bears whose crouch seems to apply only to the front end, as if it was getting ready to face off with a mouse...

I think the reason I loved my bear so much on this hunter was 'cause the last character I'd played before starting her was a druid tank. Getting used to staring at bear butts = win?

I'm ... not really sure, they just never appealed to me. I don't like how they run and I have two other tenacity pets already. :/

Aww, I love the current bear models. ^^ Not saying I'd be opposed to seeing a new model tossed in as an option, but the originals have a charm of their own. Love that bear butt!

I hate the issue with their gums that the bears have. =/ I can't look at them from the front anymore after I saw on that on here. I also dislike the way they run and just sort of look in general I guess. The only bear I've been able to tolerate for any length of time is my troll's diseased bear, Festergut. He matches my diseased wolf, Rotface, and future snake, Putricide. For whatever reason, that naming scheme bonded him to my troll (and swipe was also pretty nice).

Shoulda specified I meant color, brown--descriptive rather than species, lol.

He just looks... like a bear-pillow >.< With grass hanging out of its mouth, lol <3
