I've used my Beetle to level trough 80-85 realm first hunter.
Ofcourse this apply's to most tank pets, but I never lost aggro, and never had problems with doing any quest or any amount of mobs whatsoever (Especially with improved misdirect)
I loved my beetle

I'm loving my boar, my warpie, and my beetle right now. They're awesome.
As a total aside, I never leveled with tanking pets before, but now I find that my non-tenacity pets are... squishy? I see a massive difference in how fast things die, but I don't feel like I have to constantly keep mend pet up with a tenacity pet the way I need to with a ferocity pet. I like that they feel more like they suit their roles now.

To be honest, with the glyph of misdirect and growl, you can turn almost any pet you want into a tank pet (and some careful planning of course. =P).
I've pseudo tanked dungeons for my boyfriend with a fox and chimaera. I've been leveling up slowly in Hyjal, having my pets that are under 80 tag along with me for the levels and most of them have done pretty decently.
If you're looking for an actual tenacity pet, the only ones with "true" tank abilities (that I can think of off the top of my head) are beetles/turtles (which are great single target tanks) and bears for single target/AoE.
Worms are still nice if you don't mind the extra planning/set-up it takes to make burrow useful (i.e. standing on top of the worm, dropping traps, activating burrow, and popping deterrence or standing through the damage).

Turtle/Beetle and Bear are two excellent tanks. Using a Warp Stalker instead of a bear would probably mean better AoE aggro but worse survivability - I have yet to try it. I'm also seeing how effective a chimaera can be at AoE tanking. The old world chimaeras seem to be bugged, so you have to use an Outland model.

For me, turtle all the way. Beetles are the same, though, with their ability. For AOE tanking, I would agree that Bear would be good for holding, and wouldn't take as much damage due to the lowered attack power. A warp stalker, however, would be better at keeping the enemy off you. If you pull one accidentally, the 50% slow gives your pet more time to pick it back up. So it could be a toss-up depending.
I am finding that Shale Spiders have some hope as well. The Kings buff they give is good for boosting your damage. It'll be even more awesome once they get their main ability... whatever it happens to be! HINT HINT, BLIZZ.

depends on what you are tanking... bosses, adds, solo questing..

If you're a DPS machine in Marks, I'd go for a Warp Stalker. You do so much damage that you're pet can't keep their attention, but the ability slows 'em down enough they're dead before they hit you.

I love my worm, because its ranged attack hits things before I do.
But the croc is great too -- even if I pull, ankle crack means the mob will be very easy to kite.
And yet crabs are good for that reason as well.
Shale Spiders are nice because of the buff but they make a horrific noise. Overall, I'd say my favorites are my Worm and my Croc. Happy Hunting ^^

I'd definitely not advise worms. I tried using a worm in the beta, and its burrowing ability kept wiping the aggro... defeating the whole purpose of it being tenacity.

I love a turtle for tanking, that shell shield is the best imo. I usually only use my worm (named Absolem, after the smoking caterpillar in Alice in Wonderland <3) in for PVP specifically WSG. That acid spit is awesome against plate wearers.
Oh and I completely agree about the noise shale spiders make. UGH! After doing the quest chain in Twilight Highlands which has you go into that mine, I decided I just couldnt have one. My turtle was pulling all the spiders with his thunderstomp and that squeeeeeal is horrific. I finally yelled at my husband to turn the sound off and turned off thunderstomp so my turtle (Dante <3) would stop pulling them.

Except it wasn't like that 'til only recently. And to be honest... Something tells me Blizz will fix it, because it's a stupid thing. Personally, I'd still suggest a worm. They're great pets anyway, and once Blizz gets it through their heads that the aggro wipe is stupid and fix it, worms will one of the best tank pets once again!
For abilities, beetles and turtles, as others have previously stated. But looks-wise and just all around awesomness? Shale spiders. They may not have their secondary ability yet, but they're amazing little things!

i suggest worms bears shalespiders waripes and turtles and crocs
Worms make awsome tanks, the loosing of aggro sucks but still good tanks
Bears are great for AOE
Warpies are also great for AOE
Turtles make great tanks mostly cause of their special ability
Crocs can slow the enemy down and make great tanks as well
Shale Spider= my little shale spider.. she never dies xD they are cute pets and awsome tanks
i have had all of these as tanks pets at some time or another and never had a problem with survivability or anything. So imo all prefrence of the person

I tried a worm the other day and their aggro-drop ability was click to cast so I didn't use it. it sucks that they don't have a cool ability but I think they're still viable.

that being said, I tamed a beetle the other day and I love him :3 I keep his harden carapace thing on auto but he's never really gotten beat up enough to use it. The bear is a little better that way in the sense that his 10% damage reduction is always up but he ALWAYS aggros critters and random mobs and then goes chasing after them!

Because of this, I will be sticking with my beetle.

I found with my warpy that he's slowing one target the slow isn't an AoE... as I'd target a few mobs in the pack i.e. 3 pack of mobs, he slows only one, or am I just doing it wrong?
I want the white/black beetle but I think it might be a little difficult to get to Moams' room at 70

I leveled as BM from very very early until 80 and almost exclusively used a bear. Loved the bear. Since Cataclysm released I found the beetle to be my go-to pet tank of choice, though I have tried a crab and really like the crab's Pin. I'm planning to level my gorilla to 85, just cause I like the looks

Bears and crocs are great at holding AoE threat but aren't quite as hardy as turtles and beetles. Those 4 are the best options for extreme soloing, but really any tenacity pet is just fine for casual questing.

A turtle named Willis and a beetle named SgtPepper. ...Apparently I like their special ability lol.
