How do you level a pet when you don't gain xp?

I just tamed one of the beautiful green emerald spirit birds in Stonetalon Mountains, and it's two levels below me.
The problem?
Everything in Stonetalon Mountains is grey to me... and every zone I go into from now on will be grey to me by the time I'm getting there, so it'll be a lose lose situation on gaining xp for me.. as I'm going for Loremaster..
So.. how do I get my bird up those two levels?

if you don't gain XP then neither does your pet

you will have to go somewhere where you gain XP. if you're 80 though you will get crap XP and won't really be able to level your pet until you go to an 80+ cata zone.

I actually want to correct this.
Your pet does gain a tiny, tiny bit of XP off greys, because my pet dinged off grey kills today.

Ah, thanks for letting us know.
I wonder if a pet still gains XP when you freeze your own XP?
Levelling on my druid goes far to fast at the moment, I outlevel areas before I finish them, so I've ben freezing my XP on and off (A bit pricey for a new character). I wonder how that would affect any new hunter I roll....

Oh, that's good to know. That would be a nice time to level pets who are lagging behind up then

I'm relieved to be the bearer of good news and creator of this thread.. because for anyone else who is doing what I am (Loremaster), it'll be worth a read..
Give you an idea why I created this thread in the first place:
I'm a Worgen, by the time I was done with Darkshore, I
out leveled Ashenvale. From Ashenvale, I went to Stonetalon Mountains.. which again, was completely grey to me.
From Stonetalon Mountains (whereI'm at now) you get a choice, Desolace or Southern Barrens. I decided to do Southern Barrens to add a bit of color to my game for a while.. but after I'm done with Southern Barrens, I'll probably head back to Desolace.
It's kind of taxing to think that your pet won't level up and keep up with you if you're avoiding instances all together and everything is grey.. but this thread opens it up and says not to fear.

This is exactly what I'm running into as well: After doing Darkshore and 1 DM run I outlevelled Ashenvale. I was so excited about doing all the new starter content, and it has become an exersise in frustration, since by just playing normally I outlevel content far too fast. And with the low level quests actually being new and interesting, I don't want to move on before an area is done, but I don't like killing grrens/greys all the time either
I've been freezing my XP on and off ,once to do the low level human starter areas and some dungeon runs to grind rep for my horse, and a second time so I can finish Ashenvale and go to Stonetalon mountain at level 28 to do at least some quests there on level. It's costly though at 20 gold a time. And our guild isn't even at rank 2 yet, so I don't even have any added xP from that, nor do I use heirlooms or RAF.
I'm experimenting now with a human hunter without any gathering professions, to see how much of a difference that makes in XP gain. (My worgen herbs and does inscription).
If it makes a big difference I'll gather herbs for my worgen on my level 60 mage and I'll avoid any and all instances, and hopefully then I won't have to lock my XP that often.
