I log on yesterday morning to my guildy telling me he tamed sambas at 9 am. While I am a bit annoyed that he got it so quickly (I had already put in well over 24 hours of non consecutive camp time) I was happy for him and happy to have the spawn timer. I go find other things to do for a few hours, and then come back to settle in for the camp a half hour before the 6 hour mark. The 6 hour mark comes and goes with no Sambas. I am disappointed, but not disheartened! Time ticks by, I fly endless laps. Then the 12 hour mark goes by. By now I have decided that I am tired of being in the zone, and there is no way I am leaving without a lion, no matter how long it takes. Npcscan's heart attack alarm goes off at 10:00 pm on the dot, and I arrive to see a tame finishing on Sambas. SIGH.

Again I think, "It's ok, I still have the spawn timer." Once again, the 6 hour window comes and goes. Now I know I'm in for a terrible night. It starts to turn from the wee hours into the regular morning hours where people don't think it's weird to be awake, and the number of people in the zone has gone from 20ish to the full 49 where I can't see anymore names. Still only a very small handful of hunters. I am /who hunter twilight'ing every few minutes to keep tabs on the competition. Again, the 12 hour window comes and goes. Now panicking that I will have to go to sleep before it spawns, and lose my spawn timer knowledge advantage. I am not failing to fly neverending circles, perfectly and almost without use of the map. somewhere around 10:50 something, I decide "hey what the hell, Karoma is pretty badass, I may as well do one lap of his spawns."

No Karoma in sight, so I fly back to Sambas' path when the heart attack alarm goes off again! It's exactly 11:00! Omgomgomgomg where is he?? I can target him!! HE'S STILL HOSTILE AND NOT GRAY!!

But nope. Someone who had been in the zone for less than the five mins since my last hunter check was mid tame. Are you kidding me right now? I kinda sorta want to shed a tear out of sheer frustration, but instead I am going to bed and setting an alarm for 4:45.

I don't know how about populated servers but on Hydraxis i tried to camp for 24 continued hours thinking what i wonder that i had time to waste.I didn't find what i was after, at some point throughout the day i just randomly checked one of his spawns before going back to questing and he was right there.I digress, sorry you didn't get Sambas but maybe you'd have more luck with just checking every now and then.

I'm sorry to hear about your bad luck.

While I admire the tenacity of these long-term camps, camping has gotten me nothing in terms of in-game rewards... I've tamed Loque (who I tried camping for three months straight back when I first hit Sholazar!!), Skoll, Arcturis, Karoma, Gondria, and various old-world rares purely by luck every single time. I agree with Nightfall, consider whether to just do fly-bys while questing/doing dailies. It might save your sanity.

I'm gonna go with the fly by thing. After my madexx fiasco, Aotona's 6 week marathon - I'm a bit fried on camping. I still need to find a cat skin that clicks with me and while Sambas is kinda cool... Eeeehn on fighting off the legions of hunters.

I totally agree. I stopped full out camping back in Vanilla just because I would get so frustrated and bored. All of my rare tames now are done with random fly-bys, though I do pick times where I think the area will be less populated (very, very early in the morning, typically).

I was camping him for a while before I even saw him. I missed the my first shot at him by mere seconds. It took me 3 more days of camping on and off to finaly get lucky yesterday.

I am on blackrock which is very high pop, and full of people that just love to be A-Holes. I found it best to do a mixture of camping and flying around, seeing how they tend to spawn at XX:15 XX:55 I try to make it back to my camp spot at those time. All in all NPC scan will save you more time. A macro helps to

Just to be the devil's advocate here, between my two hunters I have Loque, 2 Skolls, Ghostcrawler, Karoma, and Terrorpene. None of those were by luck fly bys. All of them were camps and I did not give up until they were mine...even though the first Skoll took me 6 months. In those 6 months I tried a combination of hours upon hours of camping and random fly bys when in the zone but it was the camping with a friend that got it for me. I've been trying random fly bys the last two weeks to get Loque for my second hunter with no luck, not even a glimpse of a tamed one.

I am in no way saying that hours of camping is the right way for everyone. I just wanted to give the experience from the other side of the coin. For me I can be very very stubborn, and I would rather sit there for 13-15 hours in a row (and come back the next day to do the same thing if I have to) than have to come back day in and day out for god knows how long until I get lucky. I have terribad luck!

So I would say definitely try the random fly bys and see if that way works better for you/less frustration. Do whatever ends up working for you and I wish you luck! *hug*

I definitely feel sympathetic. I found Sambas's corpse exactly 7 times and saw him get tamed twice, before I was actually able to find him alive and untagged for a tame. Over a week-long continuously patrolling camp, it was exhausting.

Just keep at it! You'll get him! Madexx is even worse for me, right now...

You'll get him sooner or later! Just know that possibilities are endless and you might get lucky within a second. Best of luck

I wonder if we crossed paths? I got mine last Monday though. Nice to see someone else from BR! I'm on alliance. And too right about people on BR.

ty for the kind words! it seems silly to get so worked up over colored pixels, but for me he really is the nicest pet available and i know all about being stubborn. it's probably at least a little bit the principle of the thing at this point haha.

i logged on at the six hour mark to check at 5:00 and didn't see him. went back to sleep until now, and now i'm back to my endless circle. already had one heart attack moment when a hunter was mining directly on a spawn point with him out, but a quick word with him showed that it was tamed weeks ago. siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiigh here we go again. i really won't be able to do this once classes start back up, so hurry up mr lion!

I'd say that's purely a pipe dream. Until it shows up on the ptr, and we should have a new ptr in a week or two.

someone in general chat mentioned it, and i googled it. i can't find anything official but it is listed on one of those other hunter pet sites. >____>

Sorry, but yeah right. Why would Blizz put a rare like Sambas in the game if they were just gonna turn around and use the same skin on a totally common lion? It doesn't make sense.

The fact that you heard this in general chat just proves it, tbh. I NEVER trust general chat when it comes to stuff like this.
