For the sake of discussion, lets say, hypothetically, that the stables are being reduced again, and once more you have to choose only 5 pets. Who are they, what are their names, and why did they make the cut?

Mine:


Antiquus: my oldest pet, and the one who has seen the most with me. He even helped down the Lich King. I camped 10 straight hours to get him, but it was well worth it. He makes the cut because he is inherently special, and beyond that, wolves are always useful in groups.


Dionysius: Since I started playing WoW, the green devilsaur has always been my favorite model. I searched for Krush for close to a year and had him killed out from under me five different times before I decided to give up. But the night I got kingslayer I thought to myself, how rad would it be to finally tame Krush on the same night that I killed the Lich King? I checked Sholazar Basin, and sure enough, there he was. I STILL get whispers from players I don't know, asking if I ever managed to tame my dino. :] My "Quest for Krush" was a well-known thing on my server...


Rakhet: Madexx was an unexpected favorite of mine. I camped 6 hours for him, only for him to kill me while I was alt tabbed out. xD I ran back to my corpse, tamed him, and the rest is history. He is just beautiful, and a worthy tank.


Vultros: It was hard for me to choose Vultros over Spiteflayer's gorgeous model, but this gray vulture was a pain in the ass to find, and when I finally tamed him, I knew he'd be a permanent member in my stable. I have a penchant for gray animals (most of my irl pets are gray too), and beyond that, Vultros has seen a LOT of crazy raid content with me and has toughed it out each time. :]


Magmadar: It was a hard decision between Araga and this fiery hunk, but I suppose that, limited to 5 slots, I would need to have a core hound in the mix. I have Chromaggus too, but he is mostly just for looks. Magmadar is my main core hound. I love the nostalgia associated with having tamed the fearsome MC boss, and when I discovered that Mag is a silent walker, I just fell in love!

Five? no.

If that happened every single of my non main characters would be rerolled.

Sorry but I just can't think of 'only five' anymore, because it's not a fun thought to me.

Hmm, that's a good question.

I'd definitely keep my Arcturis and Loque, I'm so fond of those two... Absynthe is a green/grey demon boar who's tanked all of Cata for me, he'd be staying. *pats Abs* Rorschach, my white/black beetle from AQ20 also wiggled his way into my heart, couldn't let him go. And then Mizu, of course, my Clutchmother.

I'd be VERY sad to see my hydralisk, my devilsaur, and my Kurken go though.

Oh god this is hard. Somehow I managed to narrow it down to 5. These would be my choices:


Skorn - is a given. If we could only have ONE pet he would be it. He'll be with me forever. <3


Aleister - My dream pet of dream pets, I can't remember the last time I had such elation over the discovery of a tameable pet. The fact that he wasn't flagged tameable until almost the very end just made it that much more amazing.


Reznor - The warp stalker that I was dying to own and was denied for so long. Can never give him up now!


Astaroth - It was so unexpected when Chromaggus became tameable, but wow did he ever click with me. I never thought we'd actually get this gorgeous dragon puppy, but he's simply beautiful.


Azzam - Part of me is shocked that Azzy would make my final 5 list, when he's a pet I never would have liked in the past, but the other part isn't surprised at all. That's just how much this kitty has become important to me.

1. Erik
Erik's a sweety. I tamed him at 80, testing out to see if I liked Devilsaurs. Well, needless to say I do! I don't use Erik all that much at the moment, but I think I'm going to pull him out of retirement. He's a great dino - in fact, I dreamed I had a mini Erik in real life!
I have older pets, but Erik's something special.


2. Korla
I know, I know, one of the new, uber popular skins. I just adore this pet, though. Korla's my little guardian. I've never loved a Spirit Beast as much as I adore her. Her model is wonderful, I love both the Coyote skeleton model and the bright, shining Ghost Wolf skin. Her dark, almost invisible back ridge and bright legs are beautiful. I found her rather easily at a random flyby, and she wont be leaving any time soon.


3. ...Turtle.
I haven't even named him. I just can't think of a name to do him justice. I love my tank turtle - the model alone I'm not terribly fond of, but the drippy fire and the volcano nose? I adore him. He's my REAL tank - Rockchester, my Madexx, does a great job, but my turtle just can't die. No tank will ever replace him.
I got him at 84, so the tame wasn't too bad, besides the fact that I was shaking the entire time. :->


4. Russell
I was never interested in taming Sambas. I never liked his huge mane, so it never really crossed my mind to camp for him. Because of who I am, though, I did fly by his spawn points.
Once.
Tell you one thing, he really grew on me. He looks silky soft, and his model has a huge poly count, looks very nice. I love all the detail on his skin, and his bright blue eyes. I adore this cat. He ran a few Heroics with me to start me out, and he proved quite the useful guy, keeping a mob in "cc" by keeping aggro, or attacking those stupid feigning Vortex Elementals so they wouldn't wake up while our backs were turned. He's gorgeous, and definitely a keeper.

And lastly, to make my stable EXACTLY like near every other one out there...

5. Ike
Ike. I wanted to tame Chromaggus as soon as I learned you could get him, but I had little hope of ever getting a BWL raid without six other hunters. Turns out, though, that my brother, a pally tank, wanted to do the raid duo! After a few complications, I had my beautiful Drakeadon.
Ike was the most noticed of all of my pets. Everyone wanted to know where the heck I had gotten him. After a while I went AFK in SW, and some gnome was taking a closer look - when I got back to the computer, I had Ike chase him around for a little while. <3 Move To.
It was hard, choosing between Ike and Rockchester (Black Madexx). But really, he both has more use, and more character - I love this houndy dragon.

For me, let's see.

Panzer: I always need to have my turtle. He's as much a part of me as my own arm!
Glitch: Until the day they make hydras tameable (and make this into a hydra), Glitch my 'crocohydra' will always be with me.
Arcturis: I have grown to love this spirit beast. He's a bear, and what dwarf doesn't love a good bear? Plus, as a healer, he's invaluable in grinding.
Epiphany: Angered Aarakora Protector. The wait to find him tameable was excrutiating, but utterly worth it.
Likely a 'free slot': I'm sure I could find another pet that I would want to fill it, but what if I see something I want to tame?

Five???? ARGH ARGH WHAT A NIGHTMARE!! ok pick five....

1.
Heero, my Loque'nahak
I consider Heero to be the oldest of my pets, spiritually. By that I mean he was once Broken Tooth, later Grovestalker Lynx and then finally Loque'nahak. Despite his skin changes, he still feels exactly the same to me. He is the same beast and partner since the first day I hit the level to tame Broken Tooth; the same beast whose been with me through all of Classic, TBC, Wrath and now Cataclysm.

Odin, my Grimtotem Spirit Guide
In reality, this is my oldest pet. I've had him since (obviously) 2.3, and he has always stayed with me since. Originally his name was Kiba (Japanese for fang), but I later changed it shortly after taming because Odin felt more...right.

Vesuvius, my Terropene
This is a huge surprise for me. I am really not fond of Turtles at all. But this fiery fellow wormed his way into my stables and into my heart. His tanking is surpassed by none (but dont tell my warpstalker that <_<; )

Timber, my Timber XD
I remember the first time I ever laid eyes on Timber when I was first playing. I thought to myself "what a majestic looking wolf. He looks old and wise compared to these snow wolves running around". From that point on, I would always level a new horde hunter and at level 10 make the run to dun morogh just to tame this guy. Now that he is retired, I will definitely keep him.

Domon, my Corrupted Scytheclaw
This is another surprising pet that I'm really shocked to say makes the final cut. I don't like raptors or devilsaurs usually. At all. I cringe when I hear a devilsaur roar, not out of fear but because they're loud and noisy. Yet, in Bastion of Twilight, this guy really proved himself.

Seeing how we have finally been spoiled and given not 3 not 5 but 25 slots for pets it would suck arse to have to go back to 5 again but....

Then if I had to get rid of one to tame the new Olm I would have a hard time deciding!


Got Karoma today too so do I keep her or keep the Grimtotem Spirit Guide?.....man dont make me decide on stuff like that!!!

Silverfir: This wolf will be retamed the first chance I get. I first encountered Timber when I was a baby dwarf hunter, just learning about the world around him. Timber taught him that the wonderful world can be wonderfully painful. Once Cialbi was taught how to tame beasts, he tamed a random wolf, and set off to settle a score. He fought through the defenses of Timber's wolf pack with the aid of his new wolf, subdued Timber's bodyguards who never left her side, and released his poor, battered wolf and managed to tame Timber before the big wolf could kill him. At least 60 levels later, Timber got abandoned for whatever reason (clearly wasn't as good of a reason as I had thought). Poor thing trudged all the way home from wherever I had to abandon her, just to find out that some whacked gnomes had decimated her wolf pack. She needs a home again, and a safe one that she can rely on at that.

Aquind: My only spirit beast. Like I'm going to throw her away anytime soon Granted, if I do find Karoma, and none of my friends who want to tame the beauty are online, I may just tame her and name her after my best in-game friend (her main being a shaman). But, then I wouldn't be able to freak people out with my Cheshire Bear...

Fonlithien: Tamed before anyone knew about the skin change that would come in Cataclysm, because I could. Still as awesome as ever.

Argolak: What, me forget the beast that is my avatar? Never! She may have a useless special ability, but she's still special to me.

Hooch: I have never gone to so much trouble to tame a beast, let alone subject a friend to it as well. Then, crazy me got talked into helping another hunter tame his own raid boss, and made two good friends that way (the hunter himself, and the willing priest who he somehow managed to find over the trade channel).

Either Justice or Rosemallow. Justice was my first spirit beast and was given to me by a really nice Pally, however Rosemallow is the one I have clicked with the most, and love (though Justice would be a close second there).

The last, I'm not sure. It would either be the other spirit beast I didn't choose above, or OCJ (if he truly has been removed from the game... also wolf buff), or possibly my Tol Barad fox?

My Goblin is much easier hehe. Her 5 would be Geraldine (colour change raptor), Tobias (white lion), Bane (black and blue boar from RFK), her unnamed wasp [white, though possibly will turn into a brown one], and probably Krush.

If that ever happened I'd be sad...but I'd keep my black lion Pierce on my blood elf hunter Raloth, since he was tamed at 23 and has been with him ever since. On my night elf..well..hands down it's her black devilsaur, Casavir. No questions asked. he's my buddy on that toon..nuff said

Well, since I can't figure out how to delete a post...

Oh boy, it would suck to only have five. But, here goes!


First and foremost is Apollyon. I don't love this devilsaur because he's rare, or because he was an epic tame, or because of his notoriety. I love him because he had a personality before I even tamed him. In my eyes, he was conceited, hot-headed, egotistical, and stubborn. I had to prove to him that I was worth fighting alongside. Then, and only then, would the King of Sholazar join me. But for all his "flawed" personality traits, he harbors a deep love and respect for my hunter (that of course is mutual), and I love that about him.


Next is Tetsusaiga. Honestly it was a tough choice between him and Apollyon for first. Reason he's second is because somewhere along the way, I made the foolish decision to release him. This cat was my first real, honest, "epic" tame. I tamed him just mere months after the game launched. Plenty of people had cats of one sort or another, but I had never seen anyone with Echeyakee. He was a Horde-only quest mob, and back then, it wasn't quite as easy or common for someone to get a pet like that. It was his appearance (saw him right here on Petopia) that first drew me to him, and then when I discovered how unique he'd be on the Alliance, I had to have him. A very generous undead fellow summoned the cat when he saw me waiting there (was waiting on my brother to get the quest, he had made a Horde character to help me), and /cheered me on when I got him. I'll never forget that guy (though I don't remember his name or class), and I'll never forget Tetsusaiga. I only hope I can get him back now, and that it's not too late to reunite with my "first love".


Third is Vulkoor. The bronze Madexx was my first tamed, and while I liked him, I just didn't click with him at all. I decided I was going to park my butt in Uldum as long as I had to in order to get green Madexx. I don't even remember how long I was there. One day, during what I was expecting to be a very long camp, this black Madexx appeared behind me after about 3.5 hours. I meant to give him to a friend, but couldn't find her, and I ended up basically accidentally taming him (long story). Annoyed, I threw him in my stable and continued about my camp for green. A few days later, another friend got a bronze Madexx with my other friend and her green Madexx in the area. We decided to take some pictures of all three of us and our Madexxes. Since my friend had a bronze, I didn't want to bring my bronze too, so I brought black. But while we were taking pictures, my black one really started to grow on me. It was so unexpected and rather sudden. I felt that this black one, though he wasn't my "dream" Madexx, belonged to me, and I to him. Now I don't care if I see 50 green Madexxes, I don't want them. Vulkoor is my dream scorpid, though I didn't realize it the time, because my obsession with having a matching pet almost made me miss one of the best tames to happen to me.


Naphthali is next up. It was during a raid break in ICC that I noticed a beautiful spider critter with this color. I was so impressed with its beauty that I decided I'd try to find a tamable one. I had tried spiders in the past, but only tarantulas, and never clicked with them. I honestly didn't expect my next spider to be any different. I found a rare, Naraxis, of this color, and made for Duskwood. When I arrived, it wasn't there, so I went to the next closest location, Zul'Gurub. After some embarrassingly fail pulls on my part (been a while since I raided there and forgot about the "drunk" effect and all the humanoids and such), I managed to barely snag one of these, and named her Naphthali which means "struggling". She immediately took on a protective, motherly personality, yet also somewhat naive and sweet at the same time. Still, I intended to get the rare to replace her (I like rares). Went to Naraxis' cave one night and sure enough, it was up. But I didn't just release Naphthali. I set her to "Stay" at the entrance of the cave just to go take a closer look at Naraxis. I couldn't do it. I looked back at Naphthali, sitting there all sweet and loyal as always, and I realized that rare or not, I couldn't let this girl go. Turns out now, that the Razzashi Broodwidows have been retired, making my girl more rare than a "rare".


Last, but not least, is my dear friend Sheldon. He's been through some color changes (this one having the most "Sheldon"-like feel to it), and took a vacation from my stables for a time, but he's never lost the connection with me. This turtle is dependable beyond dependable. While we haven't done anything incredibly epic together, he's saved my butt more times than I'd like to admit, and he's just so adorable. I love him in this form so much, that even though I think Terrorpene looks amazing, I can't have any other turtle than Sheldon, and I won't "change" him to the new model. Sheldon is Sheldon, and he's staying just as he is.

While I have a few other "favorites", they didn't make the cut because they lack that certain "something", that spark that regardless of the passage of time or circumstances, I can't imagine my stable without them. While Naphthali is pretty terrible to solo-quest with (she's soooo squishy), I refuse to let her go. While Vulkoor is enjoying his time in the spotlight as my tanking pet, Sheldon will always be there, steadfast as ever. I love my Shikon (Gondria), Ysuran (green carrion bird), and the others that were near the top of my list, but they are just missing that something.

Hmm...

If only five, I'd have to base on abilities, since that's the new name of the game, as well as rarity and skins. Sadly all the pvp pets would have to go. So...

1. Griever
Rak'shiri was my motivation to level to 57, because I saw the bright teal tiger in Petopia and went, '...I want that one day.' Straight to Frostsaber Rock upon leveling, where I braved the ferocious (and stealthy) felines until I finally spotted his majestic form padding across the snow. Named him for Squall's guardian in FF8, and he's never left me since...we've been through so much that when his pelt bleached from blue to white, I decided his color wasn't the important part anymore. Griever was.


2. Kizuu
When the Grimtotem Spirit Guides were tamable, I drained my funds dry and begged a shaman friend to spend four hours in Dustwallow with me. Four long, grueling, frustrating hours later, I had my wolf who would panic a guildmate when spotting him a raid--for he thought something had happened to Griever! I adore his sister Kizuka, but Kizuu came first.

Past that...my brain begins to implode, for I simply can't bear to part with any of them.

I have Really been into the invertebrates this expansion, so:

Ironically enough, I had pondered this very concept myself a couple of times since patch 4.0.1 hit. I suppose this is why I didn't find the task of having to narrow my list down to 5 pets all that difficult (extremely painful - yes, but not difficult) because I had already contemplated over those that would make the final cut. In this post, I'll just be covering one out of eight hunter stables (although I may be inclined to add another one or two later). The following would be Khau's five selections:


Tsavo: Purely for sentimental reasons, this cat was my very first rare tame. Tsavo has been Khau's companion since his wee level 20s and I could never imagine ever splitting the two apart.


JubJub: This is another pet that has been with Khau almost forever it would seem. JubJub was ultimately a complete surprise! If there was ever a pet I would have originally thought would only be temporary until something better came along, this pet was the one. His quirky animations and ability to tough it out with some of the strongest and most difficult mobs I've ever come across helped cement an indestructible bond between us. His personality has developed far more in-depth than any other pet I've ever had. He's become Khau's "aloof puppy-dog" (think Doug from the Pixar movie "Up"), a loyal, inquisitive, and winsome creature. To separate the two would be unfathomable at this point.


Kekoa: Before Kekoa came along, I had never given wolves much consideration. I knew the wolf family in general to be an excellent one but I was always more attracted to cats when it came down to DPS. When stables were expanded to 5 slots, I experimented more with the various types of pets I was previously unable to have. I started out with an Ember Worg from the Blasted Lands and quickly discovered how much I enjoyed the look and idea of a wolf companion for my Tauren. I kept my Ember Worg until I was of appropriate level to tame Ironjaw, which I deeply admired for his unique, bi-colored coat. Kekoa's personality surpasses the standard pet-and-his-master relationship; he's almost like a brother to Khau in some ways. For that very reason, I cannot split the two apart.


Kahlua: Is one of Khau's newest acquisitions. I actually love playing with bears in-game; I really can't explain it further beyond that. My first bear tamed was with another hunter and it just became one of those pet families that would stick as a preferred favorite. Kahlua is a big sweetheart and is the most similar to Khau's personality than any other pet. She's laid-back, friendly, and doesn't sweat the "small stuff".


Ragnar: Ragnar is one of those pets that just fits right with my Tauren Hunter. He's big and intimidating and is probably the only pet that could stand a fighting chance against his master in a playful wrestling competition (which they do quite often I'd imagine ). Yes, I was deeply saddened by the great nerf that obliviated "rhino bowling" forever but it didn't deteriorate the bond I had developed for this muscle-bound behemoth.
