DAMNIT...hacked

Unread post by VelkynKarma »

(Please excuse swearing).

Well it finally fucking happened. I was online a few days ago playing just fine with no problems. I went to my friend's house for the weekend and didn't even touch my computer. Got back just now to go log on to WoW for the PDawg Event and...half my characters are almost completely naked, one of my (thankfully level 1) chars was deleted, and a new level 1 warrior was in its place for the alliance. UM. WTF.

I don't even get it. My email was secure, I never even answer spammers or go to strange websites or respond to goldsellers in-game ><

Well, I dunno what I'm supposed to do now. What's the procedure? /sigh

1) Call blizzard customer support. Do not put in a ticket. CALL THEM. Explain what happened.
2) Do get an authenticator. Preferably the physical one.
3) Scan your compy for malware. Malware bytes is a good free one. Ever open a PDF? Go to wowhead? Any site with ads or flash? You might've picked it up.

Oh, and after the scans, be sure to check your passwords- I'd change them just to be safe.

Did you log in from your friend's computer or anything? It might have been picked up from there.

*hugs* Sorry it happened, regardless. :(

I'll call them first-thing tomorrow morning. (Already put in a ticket though). By the time I figured it out it was too late to make a call.

I do go to wowhead a lot, so that's probably where I got it from >< I use a Macintosh...does this make a difference in terms of malware software?

I've changed my passwords and also made new emails, so hopefully that'll help....

I just found a wow fisher on my system too. I haven't downloaded anything lately so it must be from an add or something. My chars seem to be ok but I really only surf this forum and wowhead/wiki so be careful guys!

And one more time in case you missed it...
AUTHENTICATOR

They're a pain in the tushy, but completely 100% worth it. Plus you get a baby core hound. If you call and have a guildie or friend open a ticket, that seems to work wonders. When my anti-authenticator bf was hacked, I popped a ticket up while his brother called and we had his gear back and toons/bags restored in less than 5 hours.

He is now the proud owner of a baby core hound :3

Macs tend to be less vulnerable, but they are not malware proof in any sense of the word. I think Malwarebytes works on macs, but if not you might go to your favorite mac resource and see what's good. Or apple itself might have some recommendations. I suspect there's one built into the OS on newer macs, but I could be wrong.

I got hacked on my Mac, likely by a brute-force password cracker. Never did find any spyware on mine, but they probably got my email address from forums, and then cracked the password from there.

So yeah, authenticator. It's possible I was hacked from Flash/Javascript in banner adds, so I recommend AdSense, AdBlockPlus, or something similar. Basically you want to block all the Javascript in banner adds and sites. You'll be surprised how much crap some of the sites use, and most of it isn't needed. (I think I'm blocking 4 different scripts from MMO-Champion, and can still read the site fine.)

So to repeat it all...

1) Ticket/PhoneCall
2) Create a new email address for the account that is only used by WoW
3) Authenticator
4) Anti-Virus (for the Mac I recommend Kaspersky)
5) Ad Blockers (and Javascript Blocker)
Account has been closed at user's request.

To wit, I use kaspersky on my PC alongside the odd Malwarebytes scan. For adblockers, I like Noscript and Adaware or Adblock addons with firefox. Yes, pages load a little strange but at least you can allow one part of a site at a time until things look proper and avoid banners at the same time.

Granted, nothing is foolproof - or malware proof (EX: Ever open a PDF? Go to youtube ? Or wowhead/wowiki? Yeah. Wowhead's had malware in their ads before), but a little prevention does go a long way. I scan for stuff at least once a week or so.

I agree with those saying CALL Blizzard and get an authenticator and scan your comp. I also hate to tell you but Macs are no less vulnerable than any other computer. Don't ever put yourself into a false sense of security to think Macs dont get hacked like others do.

More people use PC/Windows then Macs so there are more Virus/male ware for PC users.

That doesn't really mean anything cause some of those PC/Windows viruses can still work on a Mac computer. I've got a few family friends and relatives in the computer repair business. Good hackers will make the virus versatile.

I was hacked once, found & removed the spyware. I have the most safe surfing habits possible, at all, which is to say I visit petopia, sometimes wowhead, use firefox, block EVERYTHING from even THINKING about touching my computer, and scan regularly. Yet, not 2 weeks later (without visiting a thing), I got hacked again. So yeah, ticket it (they will restore/return everything), and GET AN AUTHENTICATOR, because no matter how safe you are, they still find ways in >.>
