So get this. I wake up in the middle of the night due to having a dream that I saw a green Madexx spawn. lol.. not kidding. It woke me up, so I figured I'd check. I log on my hunter and as I flew around, I noticed I had double the amount of money on this toon than I did earlier today. And I didn't transfer any. Instantly I knew.

So first thing that comes to mind, is why didn't they change my password?? Who knows. But I wasn't gonna stick around to find out. I immediately go change my account/email passwords and open a GM ticket. My hunter wasn't altered any except having money sent to him from my main.

Then I log on my paly. He lost all his money, about 80% of his gear, and about 75% of his bank items.

Then I try logging on my priest, but it says I can't until some process is complete. Crap.. they were trying to transfer him. I go to my account transactions page and cancel my hunter transfer, but was too late for my priest. There wasn't one for my paly. I submit the unauthorized transfer form, wait for my ingame ticket to be answered, and sit here nervously hoping everything can be fixed.

Not 30min later, I have everything restored back to the way it was. Whew. Couldnt believe how fast they got it fixed. Thank you Blizz, and more importantly.. thank you Madexx for waking me up!

(Btw, no Madexx spawn.. but I think I'll take a safe/full/speedy account recovery over finding another Madexx! heh)

Oh my goodness, Teevo! I'm so happy you got everything restored. My account was hacked into once, and it's such a horrible experience. It sounds so excessive, but I felt violated. It took me a long time to get in touch with my characters again after that.

Madexx saves the day!

I've never had my account hacked but I'd be shaking and flipping out. :O

Eeesh. My mom got hacked twice, my dad once. I didn't have my account, but my huntress was in her...high 60's, so they didn't touch her. And they didn't transfer any characters as I remember. To this day, we all have authenticators, so we're pretty safe.

Authenticator tip: Did you know you can link multiple accounts on one authenticator? My mom and dad do this, I have my own. All of us have corehound puppehs.

Yikes! Good Madexx, good! I'd get an authenticator. Along with the corehound pup, you can win an iPad (To sell, use or bludgeon a hated enemy with).

Get an authenticator! It's really cheap. Or even free with your android/iphone - look for the app!

Bought one last night, should be here soon. I've heard they're pretty fail-safe so hopefully won't happen again.

You still need to add your card's authorization code manually, it shouldn't pay for it automatically. o.O

I suspect it's likely to avoid setting off suspicion/GM tickets especially if the character was popular or what have you. They might also be moving it to a server where someone wants to buy gold from that character. And I am glad I am not the only one who would thwap things with an iPad.

When I xfr'ed servers myself, I never had to manually type in my credit card authorization code.

Yikes! Good thing you got to your account in time, and kudos the the lovely GMs who managed to restore your characters and items as fast as they did.

I know what it's like to be hacked - happened to me in mid-November, though I wasn't around to see it happen; I got home one day and my 80 druid was gone (just - poof.) and account password changed. I quickly got it back with the help of my security question, as they hadn't changed my e-mail yet, and within two days everything was restored back to its rightful place and I was immensely relieved.

That being said, an authenticator does wonders. It had slipped my mind to get one until a month afterward, when Blizzard granted me a free one because I'd been hacked - some kind of new anti-hacking campaign. Received my authenticator a few days later in the mail and have never felt more secure about my account security.

Gold sellers make a fortune off of gold - we get a lot of gold spammers on my realm, and last I saw before /ignoring them it was around $5/1k. If someone were to buy 5k gold - which really isn't all that much considering the grand scope of exactly how much gold they farm/steal - that's enough for a realm transfer. My guess is that they transfer characters with a lot of gold from high-pop realms to low-pop, newer realms where the gold sellers haven't necessarily built up a gold stockpile yet.
