Thinking of picking up a cat. Is there really a big difference between the older cats and the lynx' or is it all purely cosmetic?

It's cosmetic. Any beast will be exactly the same as any other beast from the same family.

Absolutely no difference in performance whatsoever. If it's a cat it will be identical to any other cat besides appearance alone.

So just pick the one you like best. ^^
