Jessibelle wrote:That's not what GC said. He explained it and said something like "We're going to allow hunters to choose which pet tree they want their pet to be in". My fiance watched it with me too.
I'll go back and see if I can quote him word for word. I know he said it was definite though.
EDIT: Here we go. At about 4:08 mark...
"Another question thats gonna come up is 'What about pet talents?' The way we think we're gonna handle that is we're gonna let hunters choose any of the three specs for any pet. So you can have a Ferocity, Tenacity, or Cunning pet. If you wanna have a bear doing DPS or a moth with you in the raid, you can just choose if you want him to do the damage role or the tanking role."
So yeah....it's pretty definite from GC himself. ^^;
I'm pretty sure the big word here is 'think'. He THINKS they're going to handle it that way, and that is far from a promise. It could be anything from already programmed in to an idea floating around at this point. CrystalKitten has a point, and I really don't want to see another 'hydra' thing come about from this...people became so set on the idea that hydras WILL be tameable that every time they weren't people felt like they had a promise broken, when in actuality no promise was ever made and, despite evidence in the renamed talent/new spec Noah has said "don't get your hopes up".
Fake edit: Derp Crystal beat me to it :B

Except they never announced Hydras at Blizzcon. USUALLY when they announce something at Blizzcon, it's 99% definite on what they're gonna do. Like last year....almost everything they said they were gonna do...they did. The only thing they didnt do was the worgen pig ugly mount thing(pretty sure that was the only thing). The rest was in Cata on it's release.
So don't dash it like it's not gonna happen either. GC usually does what he says he's gonna do. Just my thoughts. Nothing wrong with hoping they'll go through with it.

Two words: dance studio.
No one is saying pet trees won't happen, merely that it's not a 100% thing as you had been saying. There is a difference.

Hah. XD Touche on the dance studio....although there's a difference between utility of game play and something merely for fun and cosmetic purposes. I'm still hopin for Dance Studio someday but it's not a QQ fest from me if it doesnt happen.

Hydras were just an example of people overreacting to an idea, not necessarily a Blizzcon related thing.
We're not dashing to say it won't happen, we're just saying don't take it as gospel without realizing that it may not stay implemented. Personally I have a feeling it will stick around, but there's always the possibility it won't. Making sure people are aware of that possibility, however small, is all I really wanted, not to stomp on anyone's fun. And anyway, latching onto the idea that we absolutely won't be able to choose specs because there's a chance they won't be implemented is just as bad as the people who think we absolutely will get hydras because they grandfathered in glitch pets. :P
Also Kalli needs to stop mindlinking here. *shakes fist*

So if GC said, "The way we think we're gonna handle that is we're gonna let hunters choose any of the three specs for any pet. So you can have a Ferocity, Tenacity, or Cunning pet. If you wanna have a bear doing DPS or a moth with you in the raid, you can just choose if you want him to do the damage role or the tanking role." Wouldn't which pet you bring to a raid still matter in terms of the buffs they bring? I mean you can make your beetle a dps pet if want but if what your group needs is the 4% increased physical damage from the ravager then wouldn't' you bring the ravager?
I can't imagine this would be an issue in 25's but it would be for 10's that often rely on a hunter's pet for a missing buff. Just doing dailies out and about with misdirect and mend pet you can really use any pet right now. It's the buffs that determine which pet you bring to raids, arenas, rbg's, etc. I can't really see that changing in the new expansion based on the info we have now. It'll be interesting to see how it develops.

I think the rules of 'bring the buff you need' still apply, but there are cases where buffs are doubled up - I can't think of any right offhand, but doesn't the windserpent have a buff twin? I can't check my facts here right now(and I'd be willing to bet GC didn't have Petopia open to check at the time either) but I think he meant "If you need to bring a buff but you want to bring <tenacity pet a> instead of <ferocity pet b> without a dps loss, now you can.".

Alright.
Kalli is good at doing that.
I think she's a psychic pokemon!

Yep, dragonhawks and wind serpents are both cunning and the only pets with the spellpower debuff.
I plead the fifth on psychic powers. >_>

Not taking buffs into account, I think a tenacity pet would still be lower dps then a ferocity pet. They're not homogenizing the trees, just letting you pick which pet belongs to what tree. So as long as you don't need a particular buff you can bring a beetle and still do the same dps as if you brought a cat if they are both spec'd into Ferocity. I hope it's like this at least. I love the idea of choosing what talent tree you want your pet to have but I still thing which pet to use when should require some decision making.
This makes me wonder if any of the cunning pets will become more popular. Other than the ravager I can't think of any that are used often in pvp or pve. I mean even for pvp most of the time a ferocity pet is recommended, baring specific circumstances. I just recently discovered that Serpents are awesome! Can't wait to make my Volos a ferocity pet and bring him to an alt run!

Hell yes. It's really annoying that, even though all of the cunning pets look just as "DPS-ish" as ferocity pets, I'm gimping myself by bringing one on a pug. And I'm sure if I was into PVP that I'd have similar feelings about the ferocity tree.

Really? Cunning pets were, at least at one point, considered to be dps GAINS over ferocity pets.
At the very least, spiders and monkeys are highly popular in PvP, so there's that.

im really hoping, like really really hoping, they add a gem cobra model, when i heard Jade Serpent Shrine (or temple, i forget) I immediately thought "Oooo that'd make a cool snake skin for a rare/challenge" but sadly, Serpent refers to dragon from what i saw in the dungeon previews
as for other new animals, i hope yaks are tameable, i also suspect some new wasp skins to go along with the Mantid lands, a few new snake skins maybe, and maybe new parrots, tbh i dont know what to expect, ima kinda SUPER excited

Yeah, I'm fairly certain they're on par. One of the main advantages to Cunning is their Focus restoring capabilities. I know that I'll certainly keep around some cunning pets if we can choose, simply because I like the Cunning tree alot.

Don't make me get the pokeballs out now.
Thought so.
As for pets...white damage wise, if I recall, is all the same. None does more than the other. The only time is differs is the talent trees themselves and of course the type of hunter.

I believe for a while SV was wanting a dragon hawk or wind serpent for there magic damage ability, which is where the cunning=better came from I believe, because at that time, they were.. for SV

what I recall is *baseline* damage is the same but ferocity pulls ahead because of there talents, so saying ferocity does the most is true if your specing properly, though you can spec cunning/tenacity pets to do good damage its just not quite as much

Yeah. I spec all my tenacity/cunning pets to do DPS more but Ferocity pulls ahead by a smidge to say the least because their tree does more.

I have several cunning pets that I've spec'd for dps to use when doing dailes. But there's a pretty sizeable increase in dps when I use a ferocity pet. I'd never raid with a cunning pet unless the buff was needed.
I get around the dps issue though by respec'ing my pets a lot, esp my tenacity pets. They are some of my favorite pets so when I feel like zooming through dailies I'll respec them to take every dps talent available rather then the traditional tanking talents then if I'm solo'ing an old world instance I'll respec back to tanking talents. I suppose in light of the changes in store it'd be too greedy to want dual spec for pets?
