I was doing Ashran earlier and at one point after my pet died I noticed it was all black and on fire. My pet died several times after this, so it does seem that it persists through death, along with zoning, logging and being stabled. While it is interesting, I do find it a little annoying with the constant fire sound and black smoke billowing several feet in the air off of it and may end up retaming this pet to get his old look back.

You could try entering an arena. If the look is applied like a buff, the arena should remove it. Make sure you don't have any other pets that use appearance buffs with you, like the oil wolf! Even if they're in one of the other slots. I think it also happens in Timewalking, but I'm not sure.
