Short and simple, the fire mage artifact has a proc to turn kills black and on fire. The unholy DK artifact has a similar proc, turning kills blighted and surrounded by flies. Duel someone with either, have your pet killed, and eventually, the proc will do pic related to them (for the mage artifact).

Also, does this work with the essence swapper? Like if you have your pet killed to get that effect, and then transfer the look onto Hati? I wonder if it works like that or if it just copies the model without the effect.

Nice idea, you could have a flaming/swarmy electric pet. I'd be surprised if it did though, as stuff like this is usually just a debuff and I don't think Hati copies those cosmetic effects.
I did try this one, with a DK. Asked him to kill me my pet around 20 times. No effect. I couldn't fimd a mage to kill the living sh*t out of me pet yet tho.
Also i tried to copy Hati whit my wolf that still has a sword in his head, no effect either.
I'll keep you'll posted if i found something new or funny that works.
I had a fire mage kill my pets with the artifact on about 50 times- never got the char effect to proc.
They were getting bored and I haven't seen any real evidence this works on hunter pets yet... hoping others have better results
The fire mage also said they have never noticed a charred corpse effect on any mobs they have killed, despite it being listed as a hidden effect even on wowhead.
Also, I tried removing armor and giving myself rez sickness as I did with getting other debuffs to apply to my pet. No luck.
Could be you have to have a certain AT unlocked before it works, or maybe it does only work on Lock pets.
EDIT: Upon a bit of googling, the effect happens very rarely, about a 5% chance or less. So you'd need to be friends with a fire mage with some patience.
I have no experience with this, but the idea that it only works on lock pets might make sense. The artifacts are Legion specific. Lock pets are demons. Artifacts having a special effect on demons would fit with this expansion. I do hope this can be replicated tho, cause that would look awesome.
I main a fire mage, I can confirm that the charr debuff IS there but doesn't happen all the time and it can happen on any mob I kill. I've had it happen on demons, Nightfallen, as well as various beasts in Highmountain. Sometimes I'll get it twice in a row then not at all for a long long time. It just depends on the luck.

Um.. That isn't true the effect for mages can proc off of any model of the artifact but it isn't a high chance for it to do so. It was proccing for me at level 101 in Azsuna with the original artifact model that we're given. It can happen but the chances of it happening are rare as in I've seen it happen three kills in a row then not happen for days before it suddenly happens again.
I tested this out with a DK friend today. We went to Gurubashi Arena, I got naked and he slaughtered my pet. Got the blight and flies effect to proc as shown in this screenshot, but sadly as stated above once the pet was ressed the effect disappeared. Tested it twice.
