I'm guessing axes fit in with the whole "surviving by themselves in the wild" type hunter aspect. Hatchets are great for such things.

If there's one thing I want to see more than anything else its the lich king go down before cata. I'll still come back afterwards if my guild just can't get there... I am grateful to blizz that most of the best hunter gear (sans stat stick) drops from the first 4 bosses
