I'm paranoid about it. But I live in whooop whooop and we don't get mobile signal so a mobile auth is a no go for me.
Anyone know how much postage for one authenticator to Australia would be? Does Blizz ship them to Aus?

I also hate to tell you but Macs are no less vulnerable than any other computer. Don't ever put yourself into a false sense of security to think Macs dont get hacked like others do.
More people use PC/Windows then Macs so there are more Virus/male ware for PC users.
That doesn't really mean anything cause some of those PC/Windows viruses can still work on a Mac computer. I've got a few family friends and relatives in the computer repair business. Good hackers will make the virus versatile.
A virus will only effect either windows or a mac, unless you have two copies of the same virus tailored for each. The reason PC's get more viruses is that in the IT world most companies use PC's unless they're doing graphics and even then only the graphic design portion of the company normally has them. Even now though a lot of companies are switching to Linux because it's free and a step up in security from a Windows box.
Also for the love of god don't use Firefox.

You do know Internet Explorer itself gives more viruses than Firefox, right? I know this from experience on myself and my father. Firefox is pretty safe compared to other browsers long as you dont fool with its settings(unless you know what you're doing).

3) Scan your compy for malware. Malware bytes is a good free one. Ever open a PDF? Go to wowhead? Any site with ads or flash? You might've picked it up.
Oh, and after the scans, be sure to check your passwords- I'd change them just to be safe.
May I ask (as a new player) what is wrong with WoWhead? I have been there several times but haven't had any problems. I do have an authenticator if it matters.
And SS VelkynKarma.

I hope you get your account and all your gear returned soon.

Nothin is wrong, perse. It's just a lot of adware gets attached to that site cause it's so frequented.

Ok ty. I guess it would make sense then. Best chance to "get" someone is mess with a site they go to all the time right?
I always have that fear though. Even with the authenticator. When it happens it feels personal because of all the hard work that went into the characters, etc. So I really do feel awful for anyone it happens to.

Exactly. Thats why a lot of the time such sites, while awesome as they are, are infested with viruses and such like a dog with a tick infestation. It's sad but people have a lot of time on their hands.

I was told by numerous people this browser is one of the best in terms of security. IE is one of the worst. With proper addons installed like said before, should be no issues so long as you update it and the addons when prompted by the browser. I use FF with AdBlockPlus, NoScript, and McAfee site advisor. Keep an updated virus scan, firewall, and an authenticator is a MUST. Have the antivirus autoscan, and push quick scans as often as you like. I NEVER use addon downloaders, I do everything manually myself. I bet everyone who has ever logged into wow and anything on the internet other than wow has their info logged by hackers lying in wait. If you take proper precautions, you may never get hacked. They keep your info on hand until they feel the time is right. Always be careful.

I'm sorry Firefox hasn't been the most secure browser for quite awhile now (in tech time). People run tests on browser security all the time. Once upon a time in a land far, far away Firefox was the most secure browser and many people are still stuck in such a land.
http://www.networkworld.com/community/node/58644
For one they did their own type of test. And there are plenty others if you wish to google.
I check in on these things because it's what I do I'm a nerd and a PC Tech and I have both my A+ and Security+ certifications from CompTIA.

Instead of being snarky in reply, why not just suggest what you learned is the best. Being what appears to be condescending due to your certifications isn't as helpful as just being direct, and saying, 'No, that was a good browser years ago, this (name of good browser) is now the current top of the line browser for security.' Then if you feel like posting your credentials and how people can keep up to date on the best in PC software, that looks less vicious ;p

I run Mac + Chrome and have no WoW add-ons, so I thought I was OK, but you guys have me paranoid now & looking into authenticators.

I would get one just to be safe anyway.

When you browse Wowhead, do so using the Mozilla Firefox browser with an addon installed called NoScript. It basically will block any script from running until you whitelist the domain that is attempting to run the script. Hence, I can whitelist Wowhead so that the website will actually work, but since the ads on that site come from different domains, the ads are blocked completely unless I were to specifically whitelist their domains. I am hurting their revenue by blocking the ads that support their site, but since I've gotten a virus thanks to a misclick on their site, I really don't feel compelled to whitelist their ads anytime soon.
Oh, and an Authenticator. It really isn't optional.

I do not. I manually install everything, and I only use addons recommended to me by others as safe, too.
UPDATES:
I received emails this morning from Blizzard--they've restored my characters' items. Reading over the lists of what was restored again was chilling...they really cleared me out.
New emails, new passwords, new everythings.
Ordered an authenticator today. Just to be safe (because now I'm paranoid), not playing WoW until it arrives.
AS FOR VIRUS SCANS: Here's where I need your help.
I went down to our apple store and talked to a number of "genuises" today. I explained the whole situation to them: that my account had been hacked, and that I was looking for a good program for macs to prevent this sort of thing in the future. They basically told me this wasn't possible and to just "get a stronger password." Yeah great. Thanks. So...suggestions, people? Not just names, but where can I find them...is it downloaded online? Is it purchased at a store? Etc, etc.
I notice a lot of you are talking about addons for Firefox. Where can I find these? I've never actually USED addons with my browser before, but if these things help, I'm willing to give them a shot.
Ugh...this is such a mess. Why do people PULL this kind of crap....

There is a version of McAfee for Macs, it's installed on the Mac my office provides. I don't know where to get it, IT put it there.
For Firefox, you want to go here:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefo ... -security/ and look at the Top Downloads list.

One other observation: for the folks who might possibly be using BitTorrent to get software - a LOT of the apps available there are know to have been hacked to include all sorts of nasty stuff.

That's just horrific. I'll stick with PCs, if that's the sort of crap you get trying to protect a Mac. Sheesh.
I love Trend Micro and
it seems there's a version for Macs, if that's at all of interest.
