After reading here and on the "official" forums I tested with an STV monkey. You were right, It looks like it's just a bug with the deadmines pick axe monkeys.

It's not just the attack animation the monkey is missing....
I tamed one of the deadmine monkeys. I was leveling him up in random heroics. I noticed that his damage was WAY lower than I was expecting. I popped open recount and looked at the breakdown for Mr TrunkMonkey. He was landing wolverine bites, he was landing smacks, he was landing NO melee auto-attack...
