I didn't really find any usefull information on the GC (i'm sure theres tons!) but however i did check the maps on the SS from people, and from there i came to the concultion to circle around the far west edge of the Abbandoned Reef. Don't know about your phasing issue, though i just had the luck some 3 min ago to tame GC, and if it helps i allso ran across Kolorath.
Don't belive it's a special mob though.
