Yes, they can follow you around. The pet journal will let you summon any pet you have.

i would love to see any screenshots of the pets with skills in their profile (the thing you bring up in the journal to look at the 3d model and skill names).

hmm missed out on less then a year since about april 05 (free month) started paying may 05. Hopefully I'll get in to do some rigorous pet battle testing

you catch, level and battle with them so yes you can absolutely keep all wild pets you find and i believe they will be able to follow you around like current companions.
