If it keeps it during death you can tame it this waymrlinno wrote:doesn't the disembodied jormungar have the blue smokey stuff (like the carrion bird) when before it is tamed though? is there any way of keeping that post tame?Phoronid wrote:This ghost effect of the jormungar is held even during a normal tame. If it looses it upon death we will, for that too, need to find a different way to make enemy beasts Vanish.

Re: [Guide] Taming the Oiled Hawk!
well i was thinking that the jormungar technically disappears when arngrim eats him as part of the quest. if the tame is timed with the event as a cause of the quest, isn't this possible? i can't test this because my hunter isn't revered with sons yetGriffley wrote:If it keeps it during death you can tame it this waymrlinno wrote:doesn't the disembodied jormungar have the blue smokey stuff (like the carrion bird) when before it is tamed though? is there any way of keeping that post tame?Phoronid wrote: This ghost effect of the jormungar is held even during a normal tame. Btw, try it with Immolation Trap instead. As far as I can see, it can't crit (maybe only talented/glyphed?), making for much more predictable damage.

Re: [Guide] Taming the Oiled Hawk!
The weird thing with the ghost worms is that they become immune before being eaten. The only way of killing them is to get a big load of burst damage on them to make sure that they don't get devoured. That's a whole other wrinkle. >_<

Re: [Guide] Taming the Oiled Hawk!
No, I'm still at it but I can't get it to work. Just now, he did get tamed as he died (no bright PING burst of light), but after res, no sword--then again, he wasn't missing from my pet tray (but then again neither was the oil-hawk). Would be helpful to get like 20 other people on this
The timing + respawn timer is horrendous.
Edit: Have some **** night elf here now killing it every time it spawns. Someone else will have to do the testing.

Re: [Guide] Taming the Oiled Hawk!
Ghostpaw Alphas or Ghostpaw Runners (not Howlers) have a temporary, non-persisting-on-death buff they cast when they take 200 damage I think it was? The buff is called Ghostform iirc, and makes them a Ghost Wolf for the duration.
You can see my temp tame for info here.

Re: [Guide] Taming the Oiled Hawk!
Just did this myself. I followed the guide, but I did it a bit differently;
No items except ranged weapon equipped.
Serpent sting, strafe and spam esc key.
Waited two seconds after initial tick of damage. Counted in my head "One one thousand, two one thousand, NOW"
At the last few seconds of tame, I spammed the hell out of Revive pet. Pet icon was a whistle this way, as it despawned and DIDN'T die at the last second. Counted as dead via the spell though.
Logged out, saw the bird.
Logged in, clicked new owl icon, then revive pet.
BUENO
Thank you for the guide! If I was any good, I'd make a short video of doing it, but I'm bad at it. You should try to make a video for this

/slumps
I've tried about 50 hawks so far. I keep getting it right at the cusp of death. I had 2 successes with the bird dying as the tame completed, reviving to make the body disappear, but logging back in and it was just brown. ><
Guess I'll keep trying.

If you dont get it in your stable slot after taming and dont get any error messages, just try the next one - and you will get "other taming action activate" message. That means you got this bird:O)
As same as it works for Oiled Wolf or Blue-Mist Carrion Ghost :O)
Re: [Guide] Taming the Oiled Hawk!
I'm at work now so can't check for myself, but there is a flaming crab in Blasted Lands. I'm not sure if it stays on fire when it dies, I just know it's there. A flaming crab would be cool.. someone should check that? Or I will when I get home (11pm eastern)

Finally!
Figures that the tried and true method of posting how you can't get something always triggers it to happen after.

Re: [Guide] Taming the Oiled Hawk!
Loffter--checked it (it's on my list on page 2 or 3)--doesn't keep it after taming
Perhaps once OP is back, he could add the list and his own experiments to Page 1 and keep it updated so we know what not to look for again, would be awesome

Do Not Keep Buff After Death:
* Searing Rocs (Sparkle Effect)
* Fire Rocs (Sparkle Effect)
* Blighthound (The green glow is actually a "Disease Cloud" that deals damage, and vanishes a few secs after death)
* Ashmane Boars (The blue glow dissipates even if you kill them before they go Felboar)
* The Tainted beasts (Bat, Spider & Bear) in The Tainted Forest of Blasted Lands (buff/debuff; loses it upon death)
* Felscale Crawlers (Yellow Fire)
* Princess (Pink Ribbon)
* Rabid Worg (Green Disease Effect, Silverpine)

Re: [Guide] Taming the Oiled Hawk!
No offense to these wonderful pets that can keep awesome effects with a special kind of tame, but I'd be a little worried about trying to find as many pets as you can with them. If Blizzard finds out that we're effectively trying to "trick" the system to get these pets, they may take it away. I'm not saying I don't like these pets or anything, I went and got the mist effect for the blue carrion bird, but I think it would be safe to err on the cautious side.
Just my two cents anyway; I'd hate to see these beauties go away because we pushed our limits by finding too many tricks to tame special pets.

Re: [Guide] Taming the Oiled Hawk!
I'm not 100% sure if my oil bird will be a keeper, but I really love the visual effect. I'll spend some time bonding and see how it goes. My only nitpick would be that I'd prefer the hawk underneath to be the black model, but that's a very minor thing. ;D You can only tell if you target him.
I just love the spooky shadow look though. I have a feeling he'll end up staying.
EDIT: Oh, one thing to note, these hawks suffer from the animation glitches of hovering while moving. It's never bothered me, and I think it looks kind of mysterious along with their shadowy aura, but thought I'd let others know.
