As a hardcore Stargate fan who has watched everything Stargate, SGU is an insult to all true Stargate fans. SG-1 and Atlantis were fun series whereas Universe is a boring mess of a show. SG-1 and Atlantis had action, humour, likable characters, and engaging plots. Universe has none of these and has replaced them with generic dialogue, whiny dull characters and very little sci-fi or Stargate action.

The writers should honestly be sacked. They clearly do not know how to write science fiction nor do they know good drama. Universe is clearly a mish-mash of other successful shows (BSG, Voyager, Lost). In TV and cinema, everyone knows that overusing flashbacks to move the story along is a crutch and is a sign of very poor writing. Universe uses this ploy to spectacularly dull effect. The more I learn about the characters in Universe, the more I could care less. In the episode where they glimpsed their own future and found out they were all going to die from chest-burrowing aliens but in the end didn't, I got more upset that they all survived.

Eli is the only remotely likable character and even he is a nerd stereotype. The other characters are either meat-head military types, egomaniacal scientist types or vapid slut types. Every show just seems to be these supposed professionals acting like prepubescent kids that bitch about one dull problem or the other. I know they are stuck on a ship far far away from home and issues like supplies and plans to get home are important, but nine episodes in, we don't want the same repeated drivel and whining. We want by now some proper science fiction, more gate exploration, contact with sentient aliens, etc.

To the writers of SGU, as a Stargate fan (yes this show is part of the STARGATE franchise), your characters are generic and unlikeable and I don't want to spend an hour every week watching their feelings and personal demons being explored. This is a sci-fi show on the SyFy channel, can you remember this? Stargate has always been built on battles between humans and cool alien baddies (Goa'uld, Ori, Wraith). If what I hear is true that Universe's baddies are going to be the underwhelming Lucian Alliance, then that is it for me as with regards to watching Universe. A bunch of space mercenaries and crooks is as uninteresting a sci-fi villain as I could imagine.

As a Stargate fan, I am mad as hell that they have ruined the good name of Stargate. The writers should be shot for making a Stargate series a drama, and a very bad drama at that. I'm sure Universe may have drawn in some new casual viewers, but they have probably lost more devoted Stargate and sci-fi fans who would have stayed for the long haul had it even been a half-decent Stargate series. Universe is Stargate only in name!

If you don't know what I'm talking about, suffice to say, STAY THE HELL AWAY FROM STARGATE UNIVERSE!
