Spirit Beasts are common to see because many people go out of their way to camp and obtain them. That doesn't mean that they're easy to find, though, just that they're popular enough for a large majority of hunters to seek them out.
They are common in that they are prevalent everywhere you look - you see Spirit Beasts all over the place. They are still rare pets in the wild though, and can take some time to find if you need one. Hence why a common mob would be a good addition for people that have no luck finding the rares or do not have the time to dedicate to the hunt.

i think he made a reasonable compromise with
ok then make a pet that looks like a spirit beast but keep the family and ability rare. If all you care about the look then there should be no problem with keeping the ability and family rare to satisfy the people that like having a rare pet family and ability
that way it makes everyone happy you get your shiney pet and people that want the rare ability get there shiney rare ability win win

Well, to me the whole point of having a common Spirit Beast would be to have an easy way to a pet that can heal its master. It wouldn't even have to look as cool as the rest of the Spirit Beast family, just something. Not everyone is in any way interested in how their pets look, but rather what they can do. Someone like that might be extremely interested in Spirit Mend, but would find having to camp for it equally iffy.

well i think it was previously said here that have a pet with a heal ability but just not spirit mend so that people can keep the rare ability and pet class

Of course it wouldn't be called Spirit Mend (compare to a Devilsaur's Terrifying Roar and a Wolf's Furious howl), but apart from that, they would have to be identical to keep it in line with the rest of the pets: family skills with similar effects are the same in power. That is not a personal opinion either - it just so happens that in Cataclysm Blizzard made the decision to normalize pet family skills, and it wouldn't make sense to make an exception out of this.

Yeah thats what I think.... while I personally love the way my pet looks and drove myself nuts camping, it would be nice to have a similar pretty pet with those abilities without all that extra time I spent camping them, not everyone wants to camp like I did... so a shiny pet + heal abilities, that is common might be very nice for someone else or even my baby hunter... so I can save myself the pain of searching again... I've done it enough times to really not ever want to camp again

While I do like "the thrill of the hunt" when camping, I have to say, some commons would be nice, just as you stated, Sere.
Pacman wrote:then there ya do make an ability similar to spirit mend give it to a common mob keep the family of spirit beast rare everyone wins
There ya go thats a perfect way to sum all this up and make everyone happy
I still don't see why the spirit beast family needs to stay all rare... I just don't see what makes it special. So many people have spirit beasts they seem more common than a sporebat. *shrug* In the end it is up to Blizzard.

I'm not opposed to a common, less sparkly spirit beast but .. what about giving moths and/or Spore bat a dust/spore cloud that heals for xx amount over xx seconds ?
not the most ideal solution perhaps but an idea nontheless.

That's just changing the window dressing, really. It's the same functionality without the spirit beast label. I guess that's preferable to the people who want spirit beasts to remain rare or somehow "exclusive" (which is ridiculous, since there are already hunters with spirit beasts everywhere - but that's beside the point), but it's extra unnecessary work for the devs - and it goes against the existing design. Exotic abilities are all unique in their mechanics; no two operate the same way, so it wouldn't fit the pattern to add in another exotic pet with a HoT.
Introducing another exotic pet with a different sort of heal might open another can of worms entirely.
(Sheesh, and there's been five more posts while I've been writing; sometimes, I wonder why I bother trying. xD )
I dont see why it has to be common when its the Only family out of 38 family's that is rare. Alot of people like the rare aspect of there pet weather it be there look or class/ability
How 'bout this. Moth Spirit beast with a 2-4 hour timer! Its -rare- its a Moth which i would totally go nuts over and its a spirit beast
<_< >_> that or a core hound spirit beast are the models im in favor in. ^(^-^)^
Edit: Really, it can be any model i just want whoever of Blizzard lurks here (it cant be just wain and noah im sure..) get the idea, they do listen to the community, they dont do something because they want to, it usually has some kind of player influence to it.

And there are a lot of people who don't care about whether a spirit beast is rare or not, since they want the pet for the look and/or functionality. It's impossible to make everyone happy. It's a bit unfair to force the players who are required to have a spirit beast to be at their most effective in a given situation to camp, so I'm personally in favor of loosening the "rare" status requirement.

Okay, people like the rare aspect of their pets, but does the whole family have to be rare? Just seems silly to get upset over it if a change were to happen. Yeah its nice, but I really don't care either way. It potentially could make some players happy, and if common things bother someone, they don't have to tame it. I love spirit beasts in general, I would tame one if there was a common option, as I have tamed many of the current ones we have. I just think they are really neat in general.
