Re: Random Pet Challenge: Stepping Out of the Box!
Ill add my first impressions so far of the brown bear.
swim seems like his paws are too far outward. and running his head is doing the worm or something. i half think the neck is too long. LOVE the jump though. seems to pounce. also(and i am only lvl 45 or so) he seems so small, like he needs to be a lot bigger for a bear. idle,he is only up to my belf waist. Also the infamous gum problems of a bear. overall hes nice and i wish he had some different colors but hes good, especially for soloing. ill probably get a bear eventually, possibly just for the looks. good pet overall.

Re: Random Pet Challenge: Stepping Out of the Box!
Thanks! I agree, I don't think I've ever seen this skin around before, probably because it's only found in one location and that spot in EPL is so far out of the way it's just annoying to get to.Acherontia wrote: The gray boar review--LOVE it. It looks great, too; I don't think I've -ever- actually seen -anyone- with one tamed. It looks, well, you described it best--adorable AND macabre!! Great screenshots, too!
I never would have chosen this skin myself initially. Silinrul never struck me as a boar kinda girl, and even if she did pick a boar it'd probably have been one of the armored ones, or a brighter color. But this little guy is kinda growing on me, and I'm really starting to like him. I think he'll stick around for a while. I have no real need to tame anything else at the present moment, and I DO need a tenacity pet.
Plus he's squishy and haunty all at once. Eeeeee!

Re: Random Pet Challenge: Stepping Out of the Box!
Ok! I am back with my review of my "mismatched pet," the Corehound.
To start things off, I have been trying to tame the Beast solo for about a month or so, with three other runs with untold attempts at taming him, all ending in failure.
Now that I have that out of the way, I went into UBRS with almost 900 haste (892 to be exact,) with several stacks of speed potions (an extra 500 haste for 15 sec,) and with my Hyperspeed Accelerator (another 340 haste for 12 sec) on my gloves I figured it would be easier "This time." (I mean come on, with all of that I had 1732 haste for 12 seconds)
Oh, it was far from that... I got punted around like a football at the World Cup.
(he punted me again many times about 3 seconds after his original punt)
After giving up on using trash pets, running out of speed potions and thanks to a little lag which made my feign death not go off when I pressed the button and therefore continued the tame spell for just a split second longer, I finally tamed.... THE BEAST!! Wooohoo!!
Ehem.... So back to the "suggested tasks"
1. Try tanking an 80 elite with your pet
I had him tank a 79 elite (That Exiled Giant in Storm Peaks) He didn't do to well, but then again he was just lvl 76 and is a ferocity pet. (This should count, that 79 elite is exceptionally "elite")
2. Level it a level or two
Did that, it was kind of nice to see my new "puppy" running around and burning things, lol.
3. Do a heroic
Passed on this one, I did a level 80 instance and he did ok... his dps was abysmal, but he was level 76.
4. Do a battleground
I passed on this one too, I do BGs as survival now days, and my BM spec is my "raiding" spec. Go ahead and laugh, but I am always do a good showing, generally out-preforming the other hunters by 500 dps or so, unless they are far better geared than myself. (Yes I pug ICC raids, and the best hunter can always be found there
) ..... (end rant)
5. Check the pet out in different lightings
I went into Zul'Drak and he pretty much looked the same, just in the shade.
6. Check out swimming and possibly levitate animations (if any)
He did the doggy paddle... but there is something wrong with a flaming corehound swimming underwater....
7. Get a screenshot of you and your oddly fitting or entirely mismatching pet!
I attached a couple of screenshots.
All on all, he is now a new member of my stables and he isn't going anywhere anytime soon. Thanks for motivating my to go and try to tame the Beast "One Last Time."
Oh, and I forgot to write what I named the Corehound... I named the big guy "LootMe" Watching him stomp around and burn things brings back fond memories of the old MC days....

Re: Random Pet Challenge: Stepping Out of the Box!
Taming experience
My pet this time was the gray turtle. http://www.wow-petopia.com/look/seaturtleskingrey.html
I looked for Ironback in the Hinterlands first, but he was not around. I ended up with a Mudrock Spikeshell from Dustwallow. It was an unremarkable tame and I noticed no tame breaking attacks. Everything on the beach is neutral, so there was no aggro from other mobs.
Pet model and skin, animations
The model is OK. It's not really my idea of a turtle however. I don't understand why it has tusks and the shell has always looked odd to me. That said, it was sort of cute, it's idle animations especially. The pet emote addon only provides two emotes for the poor critters.
I don't care for the skin.
Appearance under different lighting conditions
It looked best in Dustwallow. Any other lighting conditions, he looked a very sad sick grey-green.
Sound effects
I didn't notice much for sound effects with him. Pretty quiet pet.
Check out swimming and possibly levitate animations (if any)
His swimming animations are turtle-appropriate and his little tail wags like mad when he's swimming. He doesn't really have a jump animation with Eyes of the Beast. It looks like an invisible giant picks him up and sets him down.
Pet special abilities
His special ability, which increases his armor by half, is very nice for a tenacity pet.
How convenient (or annoying) are their food requirements?
He eats fruit, fungus, bread and fish. Bread and fruit are usually available from inns, so it's not a bad diet. And of course, you could fish for his supper.
Will you keep the pet, or consider another from the same family in the future?
I won't be keeping poor Darwin. I might get a more brightly colored turtle after the stables expand, though.
Did you learn anything hunter-ey from this pet?
Nah, not really.
Try tanking level appropriate elite with your pet
When I got him up two levels (me 71, him 68) we took on a lvl 72 elite and aggroed a herd of rhinos (about lvl 70s) in the process. I had to heal him a bit, but he held up very well and kept aggro like a champ. We had no problem taking the lot of them down.
Level it a level or two
Took him up two levels. It was very easy, since he held aggro so well.
Do a heroic/Do a battleground
Nope.
Get a screenshot of you and your oddly fitting or entirely mismatching pet!

Can haz new pet plz?
Gryselde, lvl 71, BM (has red owl, black owl, orange hyena, gold worm)
EDIT: No more this weekend, sorry
Maybe if this is still going next weekend

Re: Random Pet Challenge: Stepping Out of the Box!
WoW, fun
Spent the day with my new pet, and yes, it's one I would have not normaly tamed and used on a daily basis, but I will have to admit, it took a beating and kept on beating back
My pet that was chosen for me was the Brown Chimaera, I choose "Mistwing Ravager" from Azshara.
First off here she is:

* Try tanking an 80 elite with your pet
The 80 Elite I first came upon was Kirgaraak in Brunnhilder Village. In my opinion, it did very good. I did not fire one shot, let her do all the tanking solo
Only thing I did was hit the heal button, and I was suprised, I only had to hit that 4 times. Not bad.
* Level it a level or two
Lvl'd her 1 lvl, played for some time in all 3 new zones.
* Do a heroic
Did 2 heroics, was laughed at both times for useing her, but they settled down once I told them what I was doing and then proving she could pull her weight
Only died one time and that was because of a crappy pug group, Tank couldn't hold agro if he was in a den full of bears with honey all over him.......
* Do a battleground
Skipped this, don't really get in to PVP, but did fly around from Storm Peaks then through Ice Crown, killing everyting that happend to be in the way
Cleared Brunnhilder Village
only thing alive was the green mobs and the pit which repoped very quickly.

Here we took on 10 mobs, I played with volley while cycleing the mobs she was attacking

* Check the pet out in different lightingsDidn't really change that much. no like the color changing warp stalkers.... Liked the best lighting in the snow and underwater.
* Check out swimming and possibly levitate animations (if any)
Swimming was natrual feeling, since this is a flying pet, it had no problem and looked natural in the water, not like my wolf who has to dog paddle everwhere he goes
Attacks are fast, same as on land.
* Results of any tests (including the above) that you might do. Mention what you think of the pets' model, skin, animations, sound effects, family skill etc. How convenient (or annoying) are their food requirements? Will you keep the pet, or consider another from the same family in the future? Did you learn anything hunter-ey from this pet?Model: Well it's like the others, nothing really that interesting to me, played one for some time, just too big and wings get in the way for me.
Skin: Brown in boaring to me
Animations: Love the lightning, and attacks are pretty cool.

Sound Effects: heheehe, This game has sound? heheehe, actually, I had the sound turned down today, wife sleeping and I was in same room.
Food: very easy, same as I feed my wolf, so I had pleanty.
Keep: Doubt it, just don't like the size. Like smaller pets, something that won't take up so much screen.
All in all, very nice pet, suprised me, didn't think it would tank as good as it did. Using normal shot sequence, I didn't ever pull agro from her, guess I could have if I wanted to, but never pushed it.

Re: Random Pet Challenge: Stepping Out of the Box!
OK, I'll play. There's a stable slot that isn't doing anything useful on my 80 hunter. I'd prefer a non-exotic, just so it can be tested in a heroic as MM.
That or Blizz can just fix BM.
I've already got Mazzranache, Kresh, Arcturis, and a boring, nondescript brown wolf for raiding as MM.
[Edit]BTW, what's this pet emote addon everyone is talking about? Does it actually animate the pet, or does it just trow out a line of text in chat?

Re: Random Pet Challenge: Stepping Out of the Box!
The PetEmote addon just automatically displays an orange text emote in your chat box, the same as if someone near you performed an emote. It doesn't have any affects on anything in game, just gives your pets some extra personality.
Re: Random Pet Challenge: Stepping Out of the Box!
Challenge: Grey Gorilla
My hunter headed down to Stranglethorn to grab a gorilla. I've never tamed one before, and I wasn't particularly optimistic as I'm not a fan of primates in general, and WoW's gorilla model in particular.
Tamed: STOP! IN THE NAME OF LOVE!

Being lazy, I opted to tame one that was the same level as my hunter, 33. The tame was uneventful, though there were other gorillas and young Stranglethorn tigers nearby. The area also isn't used for any quests, so said gorillas are almost always up. I resisted the urge to name him Thunderthighs and, after some creative word association, instead settled on Teacup.
With my new pet in tow, I headed down to the nearby Lake Nazferiti to try him out in the water.

His swim animation caught me off-guard and was really pretty weird.
Overall thoughts:
Appearance: Still pretty ugly. The gorilla model of this game has a face that only a mother could love, and a distinctive asscrack. The fingers are large and stubby, like discarded sausages. The large potbelly is awkward. The fur color doesn't seem to change too much in different settings, but in bright settings it seems a nice, bright whitish color, whereas darker areas make him seem grey. His running animation is smooth, and his swimming and jumping animations are pretty amusing.
Pleasantly, this is a quiet pet. His low attack grunt isn't very noticeable or annoying, though it might dredge up repressed memories of gorillas slaughtering your lowbies on the way to Booty Bay. He doesn't have an idle sound, and I didn't really notice a movement sound. I couldn't really tell if the light patter I heard was my gorilla, or just my hunter.
However, for all its quiet, this is also a very busy pet. He never seems to be still, always scratching himself or pounding his chest. Kind of annoying.
Even his hideous appearance, however, couldn't fend off the love of a human mage that we ran into in the BB tavern.
Battle: I decided to take care of my very few Stranglethorn quests with Teacup, and took to killing some crocs and goblins. He managed to save me from an attempted gank by a gaggle of higher level goblins, and we both survived the battle, albeit in low health. Didn't attack any elites, but he managed to defend me against a level 38 caster (5 levels higher) and, later, some level 40 Sentinels in Ashenvale (7 levels) without dying. He does not, however, seem to be any better at tanking than my other tenacity pets, and his family skill (casting interrupt and 2 second silence) is pretty useless. While it's nice in theory, putting it on auto-cast means he'll blow it at his first opportunity, putting it on a 30 second cooldown. Trying to manage it yourself means also taking Slam off auto-cast, since the gorilla will otherwise spam the ability and leave you with zero focus when you want to use Pummel.
Diet: Fruit, Bread, and Fungus. Picky eater. While I had some fruit in my bags for my crab, I was loathe to share it with Teacup, feeling that he was taking food from my crab. Unlike meat and fish diets, which drop liberally from mobs naturally, the gorilla diet will probably necessitate you visiting a vendor.
Overall: Despite my griping, I didn't hate this pet, and didn't dislike it as much as I thought I would. The fact that he was surprisingly quiet contributed in large part to this. He didn't seem to clash too much with my Belf, and I was overall pretty apathetic to his presence. He won't be sticking around.

Re: Random Pet Challenge: Stepping Out of the Box!
I tried out the tan Silithid today! The jumpy fellow earned himself the name ‘Twitch’, and horrified more than one of my running buddies!
1. Try tanking an 80 Elite
Well, I used him to tank Chillmaw for the Argent Daily. That...did not go well. Fortunately, I was in a group and we did it, but Twitch got ‘asploded’.
2. Get it a level or two
I got him to 78. It wasn’t bad, but I didn’t have much desire to get him higher. He’s an interesting pet, but the constant motion and movement was annoying and his DPS was quite low.
3. Do a Heroic
I did a few. His DPS wasn’t great, but then the poor little guy was low. The venom spray thing annoyed the crud out of my tank though, so I had to turn that off fast or get slapped in the head with a shield!
4. Do a Battleground
Well, I did Wintergrasp with him if that counts. Not that impressive, but then I’m not a big PvPer. The Venom Spray there was somewhat effective and probably quite annoying to the other side.
5. Check out the pet in different lightnings
Other than getting a little darker in dark areas, I didn’t notice anything else.
6. Check out animations
I didn’t do levitating, but he has the wierdest swim! It was kind of fun to play with.
7. Screenshots!

I wouldn't mind trying another if you want to roll me one.

Ha! I like those tiny little wings on the slithid.
I don't suppose they use them in any animations, do they? It would be cool to see him flap like mad when jumping.

Oh, ok. I think I've seen that in action, it always ends up with the hunter's name in the beginning, since you're actually the one emoting.Vephriel wrote:The PetEmote addon just automatically displays an orange text emote in your chat box, the same as if someone near you performed an emote. It doesn't have any affects on anything in game, just gives your pets some extra personality.

Sadly no. His little wings flutter and twitch like mad constantly, but his jump animation is the same "lift by a giant invisible hand" that a lot of the pets have.Mr. Perfect wrote:Ha!
