As for the stereotypical gay behavior in role-play, I think some players think they MUST act like that if their character is gay, especially if they are playing a character that is a different gender or sexual preference as themselves in real life. I remember a huge topic about this on Warcraft Sues where a teenage girl was roleplaying a gay male character and based the whole character around "I'm gay, teehee. I love fashion and hair and hit on every guy I see and OMG I HATE ALL WOMEN THEY ARE ICKY!" Really, she just didn't know any better. Being gay isn't a whole lifestyle, it's just a sexual preference. I have a male troll I roleplay and he's gay, but no way acts as a stereotypical effeminate guy. He's a tough warrior and acts just like any other male troll. He just prefers to have another male troll as a partner over a female.
Exactly. I have characters that prefer same sex and ones that prefer opposite, and some that just don't care either way. It's just a preference, not some lifestyle or religion!

I don't mind feminine males at all, if played tastefully and not "AMG! Wimmens are icky/scary! I'm so cute! Kawaii! *big shiny eyes*". :P I just get a little annoyed when every RP is interrupted or centered around them cuddling up on each other, making out, or just being damn silly together.

His 'partner' is actually much more normal and pleasant without him around, which should say something.
Yes, people (of any sexual preference) who take it as a given that onlookers will clap, cheer and faint with adoration in response to their smallest most incidental word or gesture - those types bug the fuck out of me.
Raun wrote:They're doing it for the same reason 'gamer chicks' bat their eyelashes and use those sweet voice and all but jiggle their boobs at guys. For attention, to get their way, etc. etc. That drives me nuts as well.
Ditto. I cannot stand people who try to manipulate the outcome or get an edge over others by acting kawaii. I suppose that bothered me less back when I was single, but now that that particular matter is off the table, it's like nails on the proverbial chalkboard.

This reminded me of a longstanding peeve of mine - it has nothing to do with Raun and is not aimed at anyone here.

Straight guys whose rhetorical arsenal in an argument primarily or entirely consists of calling the other guy gay.

That shouldn't be used as an insult - you wouldn't call someone black or hispanic just because you dislike them or disagree with them, yet somehow when it comes to sexual preference the same rules don't seem to apply.

that's easy to understand, however.

you couldn't call someone who is not black, "black" as an insult, because it is a logical fallacy. You obviously cannot call a white person "asian", it would just be stupid.

However, it is a commonly held belief that being gay is an inherent weakness.
Therefore, using it as an insult has legitimacy for the bullies who do use it.

As long as there are defenders of using the word "Gay" to mean "lame" or "stupid" ("that's so gay/ghey".. and by the way, the spelling doesn't alter the origin of the slur), then there will always be a societal acceptance of "gay" as something inferior and weak.

Every person who doesn't understand that saying "I'm not homophobic, I just use 'gay' to mean 'something stupid', it's nothing against gays", these people are deluded and in essence idiots. Replace the word "gay" in whatever context you're using it with the word "N***er", and see how far you get.

When you associate a word with something "bad/not good", then you are also associating the reverse, that something "bad/not good" is like the thing that the word originally described.

As long as there are people misquoting and mistranslating from Holy Scripture to support their bigotry, as long as there are people lying to support their bigotry, as long as there are people whose own insecurities feed into their hatred of others, then none of this will change.

It's also stupid to call someone you never met "gay" - it's just a matter of implicit stupidity vs explicit stupidity.

But we're in agreement on the general issue, I think.

I have to agree about the use of gay in that way. I don't have a problem with them being gay at all, but more the way they just act...silly as heck.

Maybe I should have said "irritatingly feminine" or "annoyingly cutesy"? I think I was meaning it more to illustrate because I know a lot of homosexual men in real life and none of them act that way. At all. There are some that are more 'feminine' than others, but it was the over-the-top way that was just driving me insane. That said, 'super macho' males that just cannot handle the word 'homosexual' and 'ultra girly girls' that bat their eyes and such drive me just as crazy. I think I just hate when people are so aggressive with their sexuality that they stop being 'real people' and are just 'the resident gay guy' or 'the resident gamer chick'.

I can pretty much safely say I've never said "Ugh, that's so gay" when something doesn't go my way. Actually, I'm more likely to say "Darn it!" since I don't curse a lot (little kids around).

I hate sexual slurs of any kind actually. I can't stand people using gay, or the c-word, or the f-word (the one that also means a cigarette), etc. etc. as an insult or because its 'cool'. I want to slap a few of my friends who like to go over RealID "hey, hey fggt wat r u doin? lolololol" like it's super hilarious.

Like I said, I wasn't talking about you at all Raun (or anyone at this site) - you were simply objecting to someone being overtly flamboyant and cutesy. The fact that they were gay was incidental.

I was talking about people like person 2 below:

Person 1: "I like mages"

Person 2: "Mages are gay"

Person 3: "I'm a mage"

Person 2: "So what does your BF play?"

Person 3: "But I'm a guy"

Person 2: "Yes I know."

Etc.

Lol, I kind of find it funny when someone calles me "gay". I always respond by saying "yes, I am happy today, thanks for noticing" Same pretty much applies to any insult in-game. I deflect it with over-joyfullness, or twist it around to make it look like thay were making a comment about themselves.

I also don't get why people make such a big fuss about their sexual preference. I don't go around telling everyone I meet what my sexual preference is, not do I understand why some people feel like they should parade it around and shove it in other peoples faces. whether in game of RL.

It just erks me how or society is just so focused on stupid unimportant stuff like sexual preference. World hunger is a much better use of everyone time and focus. You can't change a persons sexual preference (nor should anyone try), but you CAN end world hunger...

the word "gay" as a synonym for "homosexual" has been i use for well over 200 years. there are numerous accounts of its use that far back.

so "gay" for "happy" is not its "proper" meaning. I actually find that intimation rather offensive.

While 'happy, joyful' is an outdated meaning of gay, it was the original meaning, and used that way for over 700 years. Gay meaning 'homosexual' has been in use for less than 200 years and has been the primary definition for less than 100 years, although it was associated with prostitution and alternate lifestyles for far longer.

Started knitting 6 weeks ago, was halfway into a beautiful scarf. Dropped stitches, big hole in the stockinette area. Kept going, then decided, to unravel. Did so, disatser, disaster, disaster, complete restart. While I was down about this, my friend on facebook announced his new (and first) girlfriend. I used to like that guy a lot. He's from the States, and when I studied in the UK a few years ago, he did a first year there, and we met. I fell in love with him. He went back to the States after that year, and I finished with my studies, decided to do a one year course over at California. But I didn't do it because of the huge fees oversees students have to pay. That didn't have anything to do with him. I then did a MSC in the UK instead, and he actually went to the course in California. Last year, while I was in the States for 6 months for an internship, he came to visit me for a couple of days in summer. But, I've been going out for over a year with a very lovely guy I met on WoW. I love him. When the guy came to visit, I didn't have any feelings for him anymore, but he's a really great guy, up for adventures, the kind of person I always thought I'd meet. So why does it affect me so much :-( Because I thought, with all the coincidences of where we met, either here or in the States, we were meant to be together? Stupid thinking, stupid me. Maybe it's because his girlfriend is tall, pretty and athletic?

I shouldn't be like this, I guess I'm just a bit sad that I wasn't what he wanted. And he probably wasn't after a long distance relationship either. I love my current boyfriend but I wish he'd do more than just being at home or going to work when he happens to get called in. He kinda lives in waiting for me to move somewhere with a stable job, he feels that if he'd take on more responsabilities, he'd be trapped in a job where he can't easily get out of.

Well, I'll be going back to the States mid april for 6 more months to continue the internship. After that, maybe I will find a stable job somewhere...

I feel a bit better now. And I restarted the scarf this morning.

gonna definitely have to take tamika back to the zoo when i can get a chance to take her. Not because stepdad is being a prick, he apologized about that. This time is because Janie mustered the will to actually leap at the cage. She managed to get the door down but the cage remained where it was and Tamika unharmed but scared half to death. She looks absolutely traumatized right now.

I wrapped a light thin towel around the cage to give her some darkness and not turning on the TV to give her some quiet time so she can calm down but its definitely an issue now that Janie knows she can get to the cage. problem is theres nothing for her to stand on so if she attatches herself to the cage, its going to topple over from the weight.

Im not giving her up or the cage or wheel or anything, shes going to get to keep all that stuff and its still going to be my property, im simply moving her back to the zoo and will work with her there in the saftey of their rat room and i'll keep contact with the zoo after my course is done to see Tamika and make sure shes being taken care of and that the cage and all the fixings inside are properly cared for and her hammock and blankets being washed appropriately and often enough so dust and hair and food leftovers arent building up.

I knew i could take Tamika home with Lucky around cause i knew from having several small animals in the past that Lucky did well with them and didnt have any interest in harming them (or even looking at them for that matter. He would check them out once in a while but otherwise ignored them) but Janie is a different cat, she has the instincts of a hunter, shes a kitten so shes very active, curious, playful, and shes not playing to harm but she doesnt know how to play nice with a living animal that is so small and looks very much like a toy (we've avoided buying her toy mice but shes attracted to moving objects in general).

I hate that i have to take Tamika back to the zoo, i love her to bits, but its just not safe here and i dont want her to get hurt anymore then she already has as a result of this incident. Janie, especially being a natural bred breed of cat, has a lot of her wild instincts intact despite domestication (specially because Korats i believe are not allowed to be crossbred in Thailand which is where they originated from) and if she was an outside cat, i wouldnt be surprised if i happened upon dead small animals at my doorstep as gifts from her. (Luckily we live in an apartment, specially cause coyotes run rampant in the nearby farmland, and her adoption rules had 'indoor cat only unless outdoor habitat is secure and safe' as a requirement.)

Poor Tamika.. im glad she wasnt injured or worse and that the cage didnt fall over but her eyes were practically ready to pop out of her head. Shes snuggled up in her blanket thats inside the hammock (its a fully walled hammock with holes on two of the walls for getting in and out) so hopefully the closure, silence, and darkness will bring her around again in a couple hours. I put her water infront of the hammock too so she doesnt have to leave it for a drink. Food on the other hand she has to leave the hammock to get but she is too stressed out to accept any food i tried to give her so i dont think that'll be a problem.

Sorry to hear about Tamika... but she will have a safe place back at the zoo, it sounds like.

Never heard of korats before, but I just did a google on them and... they look almost exactly like my cat Sofie. Could just be a coincidence, but we adopted her as a mutt so who knows...

Yea im gonna take on another rat to train and have her in the cage with tamika (lotsa room for two) so she has company and so it doesnt hog up the only free cage there. Tamika's too old now, i dont think i'll be very successful. Shes too set in her ways now. Janie has no papers for her, theres no way buyond reserch based on every little bit of physical detail to determine if shes a Korat but im without a doubt 100% sure shes a Korat thats been crossbred at some point in her generation with another breed that had the polydactl gene (not always is it noticeable either, some polydactls dont have the traits but are instead carriers). Tamika is doing ok now tho, she slept most of the day and is active, albeit cautious.

Anywho, i think i pulled a muscle on my left side, lower back and also inbetween my spine and shoulder on my upper left back (theres a gap between the two pains). They hurt like a S.o.B when i walk. I thought yesterday was to set up a piranha tank for a movie but it was for a restaurant inside a building that is next to the world trade center in Vancouver. It was a private dinner and while im not good at business or math guestimating, i can definitely say the building itself looks to be government built and probably worth the very high millions of dollars in both its value and the income it creates via serving guests in the many restaurants, sea docks, and kitchens and the restaurant we were setting it up at was probably worth the high hundreds of thousands.

They must of spent like 50k for this one dinner party for labour, props, the piranha's, decor, food, models (actual models who were dressed up and paraded around for the guests)... i never, obviously, got to see any of the festivities cause it is a rich people's restaurant and it was a private dinner but it was cool none the less but the work was literally backbreaking.

I better get bloody paid for my labour or im gonna be reeeally pissed... despite the wonder it was not a good day. 6am to 2am we were out and about and we didnt get home till 2:30am and i had to wake up at 8am (got woken up at 5:30am by my phone to boot) to head back home.

Well if they don't/refuse you can allways take it to the labour court (or what ever your version is called) XD thats a bit overboard I know but still making you do all that for no pay is not very nice.

My rant? When those charity's (useally animal or 3rd world ones) come knocking on my door and basicly trying to guilt trip me into giveing my cash away. So I useally ask "can you prove my moneys going towards the course and not the charity? (alot of the ones you see on tv/side of the street use the money for ads/uniforms/hand outs etc and not the thing it's made to be doing it for and that's basicly stealing in my book as it's not helping the the things that need help) and most don't or wont tell me or go "I can't give away infomation like that sorry" and so I don't give them my money. If they can't prove to me where it's going truthfully then why should I? If that makes me a cold heartless person then so be it! I'll give my money to things I know will use it for the course and not your fancy ads about some kids who you proberly don't help.

I know some people are just doing there job but really thats a simple question it would be like asking a hambuger seller if the bacon burger came with bacon and them not knowing.

good idea on the labour part, and ugh god i haaaate people like that. We live in an apartment so we dont get them knocking on our doors but they're constantly phoning, stepdad just tells them to fak off XD I just hang up. I couldnt possibly tell someone i dont know to fak off, specially if they might just be doing it for an income rather then to scam. The tv shows always guilt trip tho, media knows how to yank the sympathetic. As much as id love to help people in other countries, and it would probably make the world a better place as a whole if it did actually work, id rather fix my own home first. Vancouver i believe has the highest population of homeless in all of Canada. Id like to see that place get fixed up so i can feel safe going out there to shop and see all the historic sights that still dot its streets.

God, i just realized how late it was too. Where'd my day gooooooooo TT^TT It feels like i only got home an hour or two ago and that was like 10:30am today, its 8:19 currently. And i have school tomorrow..
