I saved up every copper I had to get the Embroidered set on my Draenei. Used two swords with strength on them for ages, had a boar out all the time and didn't learn about growl until level 50 or so. I was bad. Really bad. I got mocked, kicked, never invited to anything and it was the worst experience in the world, because everyone else knew something I didn't. Looking at a guide never occurred to me, partly because I considered guides cheating. Trade chat didn't help me out at all either. A kind stranger eventually pointed me in the right direction, gave me some greens to start off with and now my main is sitting pretty with her shiny blue and purples.

I still remember those days pretty clearly and so I'm hesitant to snipe at hunters like that. A lot of the time, they just don't know better.

As another example, my little brother is nine. He has a DK(even though I whined for ages about letting kids under 13 play at all) and he thinks he's tough as nails. I've tried multiple times to nudge him in the right direction, but if I leave the toon alone for a month and come back it'll inevitably be wearing plate grays and loot from Ragefire Chasm. Up until recently he rolled need on everything because 'greed' sounded bad.

My sister was that way for a while as well, with her hunter of all things. It only changed when she came to me in tears because some douchebags were talking trash to her in a PuG about her gear. She wanted advice and now she's got a decent spec and nice gear, has been further into ICC than I have and is generally doing fantastic - camping Loque is cutting into her leveling time, though.

Basically, with a lot of the "durr hurr wat is growl can I melee this" cloth wearing non beast-loreing hunters, they really don't know any better and many of them can be younger players. Hunters are written as the easiest class to play. They're pretty much the ideal beginner class, with a pet who acts as your guardian forever. Everyone knows this, and despite such, I don't think I've met a single person who considers that the huntard asking for gold might be new or, hell, ten years old, or that they'll ever be anything besides a huntard. You could be mocking one of your future top dps. No one ever stops to explain or offer advice because there are a handful of people who don't listen.

Oh and I still don't use Beast Lore. Sorry.

As an aside, we've been spoon-fed the idea of killing rares since vanilla. Unless Blizzard steps in and says "If you see a rare that looks like an animal, don't kill it, because hunters can tame it!" no amount of gray items is going to stop it. Heck, even if they did say that it wouldn't stop rares from being killed. Nothing will stop it until they either remove loot from rares entirely or make the tameable ones somehow unkillable. Not every hunter visits Petopia(sadly) and some still have the mindset of 'silver dragon = phat lewts'. Even I have to give myself a quick slap whenever I see something on my warrior. If it's tameable, I find it a home or leave it, but not without a brief internal struggle.
Totally understandable if WoW was your first MMO or an online game in general. Lots of people are overlooking how they were like on their first MMO game.

its too bad when a legitimate question is asked in trade, usually its flamed by trolls. nice people will often wisper others though to give direction, instead of the general "generic sarcastic jerk comment" that usually follows in Trade.

Alot of the mechanics for this game are complex, we take a lot of what we already know for granted (how pre Shattering I could tell you every where flightpath in the entire game was) stupid tidbits of useless information to you, but perhaps beneficial information to others.

But yeah.... seriously.... tame a whale shark????? I actually saw that hunter try and tame Gamon afterwards....

There are plenty nice people to help, but what people hate are new people unwilling to take advices and being stubborn about it. Basically keep a good attitude :P

Eehhhh im torn when it comes to the whole “huntard” thing. I was about as bad as they get.
I got lost in the starting zone, killed my ghost over and over again, hoarded grey low lvl items because I thought I only had to stack armor, refused to take off aspect of the viper, didn’t know what talent points where till lvl 55 and spammed serpent sting as fast as I could because it was the only instant spell I had without a cd.
( I could go on and on but i wont  )
I was pretty much clueless until my friend was *cough* kind enough to tell me I sucked and told me what I needed to stack so I didn’t get killed by things five levels lower then me. XD

In the end I think the difference between a huntard and a new player is the attitude. I get tons of ppl asking me for advice when they find out they need to fix somthing and I will tell them what I know and encourage them to check out petopia. I give out macros and tips and end up teaching a lot of newbies how to turn of growl, only use long range dps, ect, ect.
Its when you have some arrogant snot in heirloom cloth, running around in a bg without a pet out, sneering down at you and screaming at everyone, that I label them as “huntard” Because they have clearly been playing for a long time and just snap at you when you try and help them.
As for funny taming stories- I had a hunter who was angry when we killed Al’ar after he ninja pulled in an attempt to tame it >.< Had to explain to him multiple times that he was not a beast and could not be tamed. Same thing has happened with the raven lord. Seen hunters trying to tame the sharks in the SW harbor too xD
And Cookie the murloc…

I spent most of 1-60 on my druid meleeing things in caster form and keeping myself alive with rejuv. Come to think of it, that's also how I topped the healing meters in BWL, but that doesn't mean it was the right way to play the class, even back when Hurricane was the 31pt balance talent.

I do everything I can to offer advice (though not ever financial support) to people in trade chat or groups that seem to have no clue what they're doing. It's a lot harder to get done these days because people are so jumpy with their votekick buttons in groups, and it's not likely you're going to be able to convince the DK wearing hunter/shaman mail that he'd be better off wearing the lower-ivl plate dps boots that just dropped because they're properly itemized for him, nor that even if you do convince him (through his swearing up and down that he knows how to play his class, and his calling you—and anyone else that tries to help—rude words), that his dps will improve enough by the next boss that he won't get votekicked by the rest of your party. I do try, I do.

Of course, sometimes you get someone—like my mother, who is nigh on sixty and should know better by now, I'd think—who insists that the reason their group is wiping in H-Durnholde (and more recently, N-Stonecore) is because she (the healer) doesn't have enough +armor on and will swap out to enhance gear from resto gear to gain said armor. I swear I've sat her down several times and explained where armor matters and what stats matter as a resto shaman, but I'll still come into the living room now and again and have her tell me that her group is wiping because she's getting beat on by adds, and she's going to try swapping her gear out to help.
