This sounds like a dick response, but you can't really "hold" a pet or "have dibs" on it just because you were waiting there. If you had tagged it and were kiting it around while waiting for your pals to get there, then I'd say you'd have the right to tame it/hold it for whoever you wanted since you tagged it first. But you hadn't tagged it, you were just standing there. The allies started in right away and had no idea (likely) that your pals had wanted it for so long. Even if you HAD logged over and asked them to please stop and let your friends tame it, well, it wouldn't really be rude of them to say no, since THEY tagged it first.
IMO, as much as I hate it, whoever tags it first bags it first. No calling dibs or holding pets for people. That is unfair on many different levels.

Part of Dark Magics, lvl 25 Horde guild, casual, helpful, don't raid, mostly help people and hunt pets.
Part of Dynasty, lvl 25 Alliance guild, casual and hardcore (your choice, no one forces you to raid, but you can), very helpful
Come on over if interested (Runetotem US, Horde name Sarantha, Ally name Ellysetta or Valeraud)

Re: Who had the tame right of way?
Ehh when it comes to tagging, 1) it's a handy way for others (who may not be able to see your hunter on the other side) to know that this mob is being killed or tamed, 2) if the newcomer is just there to kill it for loot, it does lock that particular door on him*...
But otherwise if it's another hunter looking to tame it, I don't see any material difference between standing there emoting /beg, /please, /no and running it around in circles/keeping it locked under a freeze trap.
*On a PVE server at least. Although even on a PVE server, if he finds that tactic to be annoying/controlling/etc then he may choose to kill it anyway...
