Not to be pedantic (although, I HAVE earned the right to be), "rain" is not music. It is sound.Karin wrote:The music of rain literally.
Other than that, I have a wide selection of songs to listen to; it's whatever sparked my liking to them. I have found recently I like more music in Pop, Rock, or similar genres. I also like video game music.
Sound =/= music.

To be pedantic (though I don't claim the right to anything), rain is a wonderful part of the musica mundana, even if it does not qualify as musica instrumentalis.Sukurachi wrote:Not to be pedantic (although, I HAVE earned the right to be), "rain" is not music. Call it what you will, it won't get you past the simple fact that "music = sound organized by the hand/ear of man".GormanGhaste wrote:To be pedantic (though I don't claim the right to anything), rain is a wonderful part of the musica mundana, even if it does not qualify as musica instrumentalis.Sukurachi wrote:Not to be pedantic (although, I HAVE earned the right to be), "rain" is not music. however, now that that is cleared up: "musica mundana", or more properly "musica universalis" is NOT "mundane (ie: every day) music, nor "music of the world/earth".
It has nothing to do with sound. Rain, therefore, is not "part of musica mundana".
Musica universalis was a medieval philosophical concept that dealt with proportions. It used the abstract concept of "musica" as a means of explaining certain "orders" in the universe.

Nevertheless, I consider it music especially at night when it drowns out boomboxes which to some other people is also considered music but it's bad music.

Re: What music calms you the most?
nothing about rain makes it "music". there is no "will", no "intent", no "creation" in rain. it is haphazard and accidental. it is simply the abstract sound of water falling.
nothing says you can't find the sound soothing. many sounds are soothing. but it doesn't make them "music".
and wanting to CALL it music is pointless.
it gains nothing from the misnomer.
calling a rabbit a fig won't make it a fruit. you can insist all you want, a rabbit is not a fig. you're free to call it what you will, but that doesn't mean you're right.
anyway, that is my last word on the topic. it is pointless to discuss it.
And Gormanghaste: the "music of the spheres" has absolutely NOTHING to do with hearing anything, nor with sound, nor with "music". it is a concept of form and structure. not of sound. no one has ever "heard" the "music of the spheres".
it is nothing but a medieval concept related to structure and mathematics. I suggest you do some reading on the topic. I had to when I wrote my thesis and dissertation.

I do understand that there isn't any sheet music for the music of the spheres. Are you saying, as a composer, you've never heard structure and proportion in music? Maybe other people like hearing the random chaos of rainfall.

there is structure and proportion in music. why on earth would you assume I think differently?
as I said, enough said.
we will not agree on this.
I see absolutely no point in arguing about this.
keep your opinion, you are entitled to it.

All I said is to me, myself and I only, rain sounds like music to me. I did not want to turn this into a big deal. No use in continuing this after this post.

I don't see why you brought up this entire subject in the first place if these are your thoughts. I'm sure most people very well know rain isn't technically music, but what's wrong with some poetic description? I'm just a bit baffled there's a debate going on about this in the first place.Sukurachi wrote:keep your opinion, you are entitled to it.
