If there would introduce a 4th spec (highly unlikely but one can dream right :3)
I would actually like a second role either Tanking or Healing

Tanking can be similar implemented like the druid Feral tree (dps or tank options) and you can use either the BM or surv tree for it.
Healing is a little more far fetched but they can use Surv perhaps for that (like a rugged survivalist with a medipack) I heard the new monk class is getting a different way of healing (as in by doing damage you heal people) it could have been something similar keeping up stings on the mobs/boss and people that damage it get healed indirectly for small amounts (regen like healing) and perhaps some skills that consume the stings on the boss that either dispel or heal for a greater amount.

but meh one can dream :D

ps. I still miss my Bard/ranger/beastmaster from rift it was one awesome combination :( hunter with indirect healing capabilities

This is more on the right track. Still very unlikely, as you say, but you are recognizing the need for role diversity > yet-another-DPS-spec, which was a key factor in Blizzard's decision to split feral into 2 specs.

Personally I don't think they would ever mess with the vision behind the current hunter specs - they know that far too many players are heavily invested in it and would be extremely hostile to having it messed with at that level; it's one thing to say "here's a new set of talents that help marksmen be good glass cannons, BM be better super-pets, and SV be better DoT throwers", quite another to say "throw away your gun - you're a melee spec now!".

Therefore I think if anything, it would be a 4th spec, and since DPS is already saturated, and resto would make no sense at all for a hunter, it would be some form of tank. But it would still follow the basic "hunter = ranged / pet = melee" role, so as to still keep to the basic essence of huntering as we know it, and (at least as importantly) to allow a significant chunk of spells to be recycled and minimize the amount of stuff that needs to be created from scratch... and also, so that hunters can dual spec into it with at least some carryover of skill.

It would be simple enough to give them a (more) "tank oriented" version of the BM tree - the only thing remaining would be perspective. How do you allow this hypothetical spec to enjoy the same "worms eye" POV as a normal tank, so it can see what's happening amidst the usual scrum of mobs? I think the answer would be to give it a very specialized form of Eyes of the Beast - this would move the POV to the pet and cause the hunter to function on a pet AI bar of sorts, also unlocking certain pet-centric abilities (but that would need to be a tradeoff not a straight up boost, so that players more comfortable tanking with POV on their hunter are not penalized).

Etc.

Still farfetched, but it would give hunters a viable tank spec, and bring back EotB in a more practical way.

Just sayin. ;)
