.....She gives him chocolate???

I know this is going to sound bad since it's your relative, but how did her own children survive? Unless maybe she didn't "spoil" them the same way??? I agree with the others, if you can get him to a vet yourself, do it, then send her the bill and demand a thank you for saving his life (if it can be at this point).

Lets just say Phas is the only family that puts up with her atm, which is also why I dont want to ruffle feathers..shes leaving everything to him atm <_<

Poor doggie and poor her imo. It seems she genuinely doesnt realize what shes doing and my guesses would be 1. She doesn't want to lose the dog like she lost her husband and 2. Shes afraid what she'd have to love anymore if he died. People who lose spouses and get pets often give them this kind of spoiling because excessive spoiling softens the loss of a loved one. Maybe actually researching what he could have/complete with symptoms would help her see that shes potentially killing him.

Yes she knows how toxic it is..her thing is he didnt get hurt the first time..so it's ok Though I think the realization that something could be wrong may have gotten to her last night. She spent the morning saying how worried she is about him and that she wants some good news.

ANYWHO. So about 5 mins ago her phone rang. we dont answer her phone because its never for us XD So I let the machine pick up since she is out. It's the vet. His results are back and it IS diabetes! Is it sad that I feel some vindication? Now I just need her to get home and hear the message.

That's very sad.. I dont know her personally but I wouldnt take the news very well myself. I think you need to comfort her, I wouldnt gloat about it by any means. Its important that he get the care he needs and while she very well probably caused his problem as I said before emotional people clinging to animals after the loss of a loved one tend to spoil the animal severely and in bad ways without knowing how bad it really is. They may say they know but in truth they just need something to love even if they dont love it the right way.

Oh god..no. I would never gloat at all. I just meant to me thats how it feels. I am gonna offer any support she is willing to take. I know this will hit her very hard.

I didnt mean to come off that ass-like >_< I'm jsut glad it got noticed and caught before her "loving" him killed him.

I know she loves and adores her dog and never meant him ANY harm. And I am hoping she wont be too upset with me for pushing to get him checked.

EDIT: o_o just now, the dog, who isnt allowed in our room, and he knows it. Just walked in here, and sat next to me and nuzzled into my leg. No barking for food like normal..no nothing..just nuzzling. o_o

 No of course not <3 My neighbors cat was like that. He got severely over-weight and had a heart attack because she let him eat whatever he wanted. It is sad but its also very good you're going to support her. My neighbors daughter when she heard that news gloated to her mother that "I told you that you being stupid would kill him." Her mother was 75 years old, I mean really? She probably wont be mad at YOU she may be mad at herself but that will come naturally. She'll be scared thats for sure but with you and your boyfriend helping her I can see her getting along much easier. Hes her baby and nobody wants to lose their baby.Truthfully she will probably thank you, whos to say if you hadnt of pushed her it could have been fatal for him. Oftentimes we are to blind to see what needs to be seen for fear of the consequences. Thats why its good that she has you. <3

Well, she just got home, and I had my boyfriend tell her about the message so as not to come off and gloating to her. She burst into tears...and seems to think it's like a death sentence. Honestly, I was glad it was that and not failing kidneys..My mothers dog was diabetic, I know how to take care of one.

Now to just get her past this part and onto the taking care of him part..

Thats to be expected shes hurting right now and if you have experience caring for a diabetic dog thats more for her to be happy about, when she does come around. She will it'll just take a little time for her to realize he'll be ok.

Ok, so I finally got the courage to go talk to her. I just asked how she was doing and her her reaction control the conversation.

Shes just worried about him because she loves him so much and she is afraid he is going to be in so much pain because of this.

I just sat there, letting her get it out then quietly explained that I had had a dog with this and she went on another 10 years with it. She immediately perked a little and asked me how the dog was and how we did it. I explained it to her. her big fear is the needles possibly needed. Apparently the dog is terrified of needles and she is terrified of scaring him with one. I offered to be the one he was afraid of and use the needle if needed. I told her that people and dogs life happily with it all the time and her dog didnt seem in any pain. He was just going down that road and thankfully we caught it before it did cause him pain. I never blamed her of anything or said what I think/know caused it. I am sure she is beating herself up about that enough on her own.

She seemed to calm a bit. And she started to see what she could find online about herbal remedies (which she always does) And has gone to the concerned about how this will effect things financially now. And about her vacation at the end of may.

She said the people food snacks are stopping now, though she will stay with the boiled chicken for now. and she has an appointment with the vet to determine treatment tomorrow.

So seems to be seeing the light now.

Jelani, all I can say is: you're a good granddaughter. A great one, even. Your grandma is very lucky to have you.

Honestly, the needles used for giving insulin are very fine. If you deliver it into the scruff of the animal's neck they'll barely feel it; just keep a good grip on the scruff so they don't twitch and twist the needle, and make sure it's not going into muscle and everything is fine.

Chances are, the dog doesn't care about needles, but is reacting to HER freaking about having to 'stab her dog with a needle'. Dogs are a lot more likely to react to people's reactions than anything else.

someday I'll find someplace to host a sig that isn't stupid money-grubbing photobucket

Mentioned this earlier in guild chat. Forgot to give you the name.
BLUE WILDERNESS DOG FOOD
Not the cheapest but if she want one of the top 3 dog foods on the market this is it. I love it and so does my picky, special diet needs dog. (she has food allergies)

Lol, shes not my Grandma but I try to be as good as I can since she drives me batty sometimes XD

Yea I showed her where on his she would use the needle and explained that it wont hurt him, using the example that it's the same area that mother dogs carry their babies and they dont cry out in pain. She nodded slightly to that..

I will mention the dogfoor to her Rex :) THanks

Ah! apologies. I saw "grandma" in the original post, but seem to have missed it was your BF's grandmother.

Still, you've demonstrated an incredible level of caring and tact. I think it's wonderful.

So did I!!! I think we were probably so focused on the dog that we skipped right over that little detail. :)
