Slapperfish wrote:Oh god... I have this one really, REALLY bizarre fear. I'm so scared of it that I can't even bring myself to type it out or say it out loud. It's a fear that I've been plagued with since as early as first grade, all stemming from my experiences with an old classmate of mine. Out of all the people I've ever met, only a handful of people know about it: my brother, my sister, my mother, my earliest childhood friend, and the aforementioned classmate. Due to how somewhat commonplace it is, it's made visiting certain places difficult, both in life and online. One of my other friends once thought I was suffering from a stroke when I saw a poster of it hanging in a shop, and I couldn't bring myself to tell them why I acted so. And worst of all, I feel like if I say what my fear is, someone, somewhere will use it against me and psychologically torture me to the brink of suicide. Yeah, it's that serious in my eyes.

Until I feel more secure about discussing it, I'm keeping it as much of a secret as possible...

(If you thought I subtly included my fear in this paragraph, and guessed that my fear was Stephen King's "It", you're completely wrong.)
My first thought was a poster of a kitten hanging from a branch, then I thought maybe its a wall clock...but if its Slapper...it might even be a wall mounted pencil sharpener...or maybe a fountain...it could be anything, even a boat!

Air raid sirens. They fill me with a chilling horror. I used to live in a place where the sirens were tested every month and I would always forget about it. Whenever they started blaring, I just felt my blood freeze in terror. I don't know if it's because of an underlying fear of warfare or being bombed to smithereens. In a film it doesn't affect me quite as much, although I squirm a little and find myself wondering how terrible it must have been/is for the people who experience(d) it. I often think of how my mother told me that it became so commonplace during the wars in Finland that my grandmother said they didn't even bother finding shelter anymore. And while I find that brave and insane, I also wonder whether it was because they were all cowering in fear, as I undoubtedly would have been. Because of the siren, not the planes, you understand.

Teeth make me uncomfortable. Not teeth in a mouth, but those that have been removed. My ex-husband's parents saved his baby teeth for whatever horrendous reason, and he has them in a little box. And whenever he wanted to creep me out, he'd shake the box at me and that was enough for me to feel nauseous and shivery. I imagine I won't cope well when my kids start losing theirs, and I certainly, certainly won't save them, thank you kindly. Ew. *shudder*
Amusingly, animal teeth don't bother me at all.

Dried ketchup and mayonnaise. This is less of a fear and more of an extreme disgust. Mustard is also gross when dry, but not as bad. It's become worse as I've aged, and I absolutely cannot touch a ketchup or mustard bottle that has dried residue on it. I do not want it anywhere near my hands, mouth or food. Oh god, even typing it makes me feel sick.

I have an irrational fear of suffocation and choking which stems from a time in my childhood which seemed fine, but I suppose wasn't (my parents were fighting a lot at the time, prior to their divorce). It first started with me becoming afraid of any shirts touching my throat. Turtlenecks became impossible to wear (and I still feel uncomfortable when I do), and I would tear and stretch even the loosest T-shirts so the neck wouldn't touch my throat. Later, during my early teens, I had a difficult phase when other things were very wrong as well, but it also culminated in me beginning to starve myself - though not on purpose. I felt I couldn't eat anything without choking. I was entirely unable to process spaghetti, I had to peel apples because I couldn't swallow the peel, it took me hours to eat ANYthing, even soups, unless they were completely mushed. This period lasted about a year, and at the end I basically licked ice cubes for my liquid needs, and ate mainly white toast, with crusts removed, onto which I had squeezed lemon juice. I was ill a lot, I was very thin and I felt bad in general. The other issue that was also causing this was so embarrassing that I couldn't bring myself to tell my mother about it (even now only those closest to me know about it - and my mother still does not), and so she thought I had anorexia. She warned me that if I didn't start eating, she'd take me to hospital. I still didn't tell her what was really up. In the end, on Christmas Eve I took a hold of myself, and I sorted out the issue I'd been having in secret. And after that the obsession with choking lessened.
These days I still can't bear anyone touching my throat, looking at Adam's apples makes me uncomfortable, panic attacks are always triggered by a feeling of suffocation I sometimes have when trying to sleep, I still don't like shirts touching my throat (scarves are fine though - go figure) and while I am generally very calm when my kids are sick, if I hear them even slightly choking on a bit of water for example, I become shivery and clammy, and cannot cope with it at all.

Besides the issue from my teens that I don't wish to mention here, I think that's it really.

Oh, this isn't so bizarre, but it's still something that messed me up a bit as a kid. I didn't mention it before because I've mostly gotten over it, but when I was young (elementary school/middle school) I was cripplingly afraid of tornadoes. I have no idea how it started, maybe from seeing pictures of them- but either way, it got bad fast.

First it was big thunder storms. I was so scared of them that I distinctly remember laying on my parent's bed with a pillow over my head, shaking so hard that I hurt and sobbing uncontrollably. That happened every time there was a big storm. As far as I was concerned, every thunder rumble was the tornado coming to kill us. I started to be really afraid of lightning because of this too, and I was extremely paranoid about being outside when there was a storm anywhere close. I remember my grandma walking out to the mailbox while a storm was on the horizon- I stood by the door in dread, terrified that she'd be struck by lightning and killed.

Anyway, that got worse and I ended up afraid of rain for a while, because rain leads to thunder. Which is a shame because I love rain. And then I linked rain to clouds, so every time I saw clouds I had to ask my parents if it was a rain cloud and I felt dread every time it was cloudy. And then I learned that planes can leave contrails that turn into clouds. Queue Lupis being afraid of planes.

It got better of course. I love storms. But I'm not going to lie, when I hear that awful storm warning voice on TV/the radio, I instantly get a jolt of adrenaline. I HATE that voice. I hate those warnings. Terrifying, terrifying things.

Oh, and Mozag, that year of being unable to eat sounds just awful.

Large flying insects! Pretty much anything that has the capability of making a loud buzzing sound scares the living sh*t out of me! Insects like beetles, bumblebees, and cockroaches (Who knew those suckers could fly ... that's just f---ed up!). If it makes that horrific buzzing sound anywhere around me, I hit the floor like I'm a soldier re-enacting their Vietnam flashback! I also break out into uncontrollable twitching spasms and start crying if the insect doesn't go away fast enough! Strangely enough, I'm not afraid of hummingbirds, but the smaller ones resemble bumblebees so much that I experience the same symptoms as I would with the insects. I'm still trying to deduce if my fear stems from the large insect itself or the sound it produces since I don't really care to have large insects (flying or not) anywhere around me if I can avoid it. The buzzing noise though ... oh how it makes me shudder!

I also have a phobia of climbing ladders but I think that ties in with the more generic fear of heights and/or falling. I'll only go as high as the second or third step. Anything after that and I start to go into panic mode.

As a child, I was terrified of stairs and escalators. I always had to have someone pick me up and carry me for fear of being sucked in underneath or falling head first while going down! I'm not afraid of stairs anymore like I once was, but to this day, I cannot attend a concert/sporting event or visit the mall without having my husband walk right in front of me on the steps. I still experience the panic that I may fall forward at times!

I'm scared of the dark. I'm currently 19 and I hate sleeping with the door closed. I always keep a light outside of my bedroom on, so I don't freak out. When the power goes out, I normally hyperventilate. Yeah....

Also...when I go to the bathroom at night, I jump off my bed and get away from it as fast as possible. When I come back, I make sure to jump. I'm scared something will grab my legs.

Rabies. Terrified. Like crazy terrified. I got a cat recently and was convinced for months it was rabid but somehow wasn't showing it, even though I could probably give an hour long lecture on rabies and how it presents in different species. I know way too much about rabies, because it terrifies me so much. The vet had to explain repeatedly that my cat did not in fact have rabies. If I could afford the human rabies vaccine that vets and animal control officers get, I would get it. I've thought about becoming an animal control officer just so work would cover the vaccine. Yeah....

Mozag I can relate to the throat thing. It has taken me a long time to get to where I can wear a necklace, no chokers though, anything to close and I panic.Of course my problem started because my dad thought it was funny to hold me by the throat out windows to scare me.

Tornadoes are pretty dang scary! I mean we had one around early 2013 in the Northshore (er the rich white part of Auckland) and the amount of damage it did and the people who died it it was horrible and by American standards it would not of even been classed as a small one! I mean it's like evil killer wind that shit is scary!

Being barefoot outside. I used to love it too, that feeling of squishing warm mud between my toes after the sprinklers have just turned off and the cool evening grass, I used to love to pull it up in clumps (I like picking things up with my feet alright :P ). All that changed after learning that Clostridium tetani likes the soil in our state as well as ticks with lyme disease. The Clostridium tetani is fine if you get a regular tetanus shots (mine is 5 years overdue, yes I know they last 5 years) but the lyme disease, if you know anything about how you are treated, or rather not treated, in this country when you get it, you would be scared too. Also every time my hair brushes up against my body when I'm in bed I get all paranoid thinking it's something other than me. My box-spring is on the floor so sleeping with fiddle backs and scorpions is a possibility.

Agreed, although it's a tossup between the thing growing and having it be totally dependent on me. They told me when I was 20 that I would want kids when I was 25, when I hit 25 they told me 30, I'm over 40 now and still no rug rats. The only babies I could stand were my sisters' two when they were little. Babies are gross little things on the whole.
My true phobia is of moray eels though. Just a picture or one on tv locks up every muscle in my body. The first time I saw one live in an aquarium store(it was about 2 1/2 inches long) I ran out into the parking lot and threw up. Normal eels don't bother me, I worked for a summer pulling crab pots and tossing eels around all day and nothing. It has to be a moray. No clue why, been like this about them since I was young. It doesn't stop me from going into the ocean, though if I ever saw one while I was swimming I would probably just have a heart attack.

Here's another one of my own. The topic was brought up today so I remembered about it. Anything paranormal. While it's not bizarre as such and certainly not rare, I refuse to have *anything* connected to the paranormal anywhere near me. I still feel a bit bad about it, but before my boyfriend moved in with me, I learned he had an Ouija board. I couldn't quite handle that well and I (politely) let him know I refused to have it in my house. The reason I feel bad though is because he decided to sell it rather than just keep it at his mother's house. >___< But I wouldn't be able to sleep knowing that was in my room/house.

Tarot cards I'm *okay* with and have had my readings taken a few times. They don't freak me out, but I feel it would if I had readings done by a professional rather than just my friends who have the cards. I downright refuse to go anywhere that's remotely haunted or thought to be.

The fear isn't so much that I don't want ghosts or spirits near me, it's that I don't want to believe in them. I don't know whether I do or not, and I've managed to avoid any paranormal encounters so far in my life, and that almost scares me because I feel like I've gotten lucky with that. My mother used to see things a lot, as did my boyfriend before he moved in with me. He hasn't seen anything since.

I can still watch the films, though I'd rather avoid them, and Paranormal Activity scares the utter crap out of me. As did the Paranormal Entity films, specifically the third one... My boyfriend fell asleep during that one and I was left there, scared shitless, watching it on my own. >: I hated it.

Spiders creep me out a lot. Mostly nasty black shiny ones, but not jumping spiders (cute little puppy spiders!) or daddy longlegs. But I suppose that's not a bizarre fear, rather a really common one. So it probably doesn't belong here.

My greatest fear is probably something more abstract like growing old alone and unloved. Wow, that's a downer now I read it back. I'm really not that emo, I swear ;)
