It really is crazy thinking about the size of Germany vs the rest of the world, and how much power they had in WW2! - Eek hope thats no offensive - I didn't mean it to beKarathyriel wrote:Amazing, what kind of ruckus and riot this little spot on the map caused in World War two, huh?

So, theoretically, if my house looks pretty bad, I can declare it a new country and toss rocks at any american that walks past, and eventually I'll get an entirely rebuilt house?Dulanie wrote:- A country can count on being rebuilt if the USA beats them in a war. i.e. Germany, Japan, Iraq, Afganistan

The United States of America
Where is it located?
My husband likes to refer to it as the "shirt of North America", with Canada being the "hat" and Mexico being the "pants". (He's....creative.)
USA in relation to the rest of the world?
I'm too lazy to dig up a picture, but looking at your standard laid-out world map, it's out west. Yeehaw.
Name 3 cool things about your country (state)!
- 31 of Ohio's library systems were all ranked in the top ten for American cities of their population category.
- Baseball's first fully professional team, the Cincinnati Red Stockings of 1869, were organized in Ohio (though our current team is now the Cincinnati Reds).
- The city Wapakoneta was the birthplace of Apollo 11 astronaut Neil Armstrong.

Canada! But since Veph already covered the country, I'll do Alberta!

Where is it located?
Right about....

Name 3 cool things about your country!
1. The oilsands of course! It may have lost some face in the recent worldwide 'Green' surge, but it is still a very important part of the Province. Alberta is the world’s 2nd largest exporter of natural gas and the 4th largest producer. The Alberta oil sand deposits contain at least 85% of the world's reserves of natural bitumen! Is impressive, yes?

2. It may not look it, but Alberta is approximately the same size as France or Texas!
3. Home to such attractions as Banff National Park (just as good as Whistler...), the world's largest Beaver, and Vulcan, the little town that lives and breathes Star Trek!
And, I can't help but to put something about Canada in general...

Massachusetts is on the east coast of the U.S. To our north, you have Vermont and New Hampshire, to the south, Connecticut and Rhode Island, and to the west, New York State.
My home city is Lynn, Massachusetts. We're located to the north of Boston in what we call the North Shore. Lynn is roughly 15 miles from the Boston.
State symbols:
flower Mayflower (1918) ~not just a ship for pilgrims
tree American elm (1941) ~I might have known this
bird Chickadee (1941)
song “All Hail to Massachusetts” (1966) ~I did not know this
beverage cranberry juice (1970) ~yummy
insect ladybug (1974)
cookie chocolate chip (1997) ~very yummy
muffin corn muffin (1986) ~good with cranberry juice
dessert Boston cream pie (1996) ~very very yummy
Nicknames: Bay State; Old Colony State
Origin of name: From Massachusett tribe of Native Americans, meaning “at or about the great hill”
We're also "famous" for cursed sports teams, huge highway reconstruction projects that go wrong-I'm looking at you "Big Dig". In Massachusetts, a lot of folks do not pronounce their "r"'s and we use words and phrases like, "wicked" and we have an accent, it seems. Sound this out and you too could be a Bostonian "I pahked my cah in Hahvid yahd."
We're also steeped in history. Bunker Hill is here, as is the ship, the Constitution, and the Old North Church. We had the Tea Party here in our harbor. You can visit Salem and see re-enactments of the witch trials. There's a lot here. My favorite factoid about my home state, we're the home of Dr. Suess!

I'm so used to it that sometimes I forget to appreciate it, but when I do stop and think I'm left in awe. I'm interested in genealogy and I've so far researched my grandad's tree back to the latter 1500s without any of those relatives ever living more than a few miles away from one another! To think of my ancestors being around (and that I know their names, where they lived, their birthdays, their occupations, etc.) when certain countries were founded to be what they are today boggles my mind. History is a truly amazing thing.Gigglemonsta wrote:LOL There NZ wasn't settled until 1840!!! Sometimes I'm jealous of all your guys intense history (particularly Europe). Man even America in the 1600's seems like forever to me!

I love hearing about all these places I've never been to, it makes me want to visit one day!

No, I'm in awe over my country having a history since 410 (and before it had English people as mentioned in my first post), and a personal family history that I know about since the 1500s.Saturo wrote:You guys are in awe over having a history since 1600?

It's located like... below Canada... but above Mexico... so if you're in Canada you have to dig really deep, but if you're in Mexico you have to learn to fly...
Three things? Uh, we invented... lots of stuff... and uh... we have... food... and... dang this is hard... ... ... oh! Yeah. We have ducks. Ducks are a natural occurring part of the wildlife. For serious.
