If you'd really like the name, you can always add ASCII characters in it. :)

*shrug* All my hunters have different themes for their pet names, so I renamed the rares to fit those themes. :)

Thrall | Kormai - 100 Blood Elf Hunter | Kari - 100 Undead Hunter | Sintharia - 100 Blood Elf Warlock | Rhoxi - 100 Goblin Mage
Stormrage | Kormai - 100 Draenei Hunter | Kari - 6 Worgen Hunter
...and so many other alts!

I always give my pets my own name. The way I play, I figure that the mob name is a name that humanoids gave them to identify them, not a name the animal gave itself. So, when it becomes my companion, it sheds its previous name because it's no longer a creature out in the wild, but instead my new friend. It's actually harder to explain than I thought it'd be. I suppose to me, taming a creature is almost like it's being "reborn" in a sense. It agrees to give up its past way of life, name and all, to come with me. Therefore, I give it a suitable, well thought-out name. I always put a lot of thought into each pet's name. In fact, if I tame a pet and have a hard time thinking of a name for it, I typically can't bond with it. I'll give it about a day but if I still can't think of a name for it, then I feel that we weren't meant to be together and I release it back to the wild where it can pick back up on its previous way of life.

Yeah, I'm strange, I know.

For me I usually have some naming theme or something like that such as a japanese theme for Saon which im not a 100% I kept  shes busy staring at empty desert. Usually I can come up with names pretty fast, while with Sambas for Sas I already had him named before I tamed him which is a first for me. I named all my Madexxs after the letter A on her to keep my sanity... Alucard (brown), Alesandro (green), Alectra (red), Aerien (changing it to Aeria) (blue), Akari (black). For me a name really helps set off a pet, usually I really like a pet but it seems to me that I either like it a 100% better after I named it or I like it less and have to rename it like I did with Skoll. I was thinking about keeping the names for some of my rares except when I was camping Sambas and npcscanner went off in TH, moused over the dot and it said SAMBAS only for it to be a horde pet.. other factions showu p as red dot *whimpers* And yah SD didnt go off but you have to be somewhat close for it to do so, and anytime you camp for a pet and npcscanner goes off it gives you a heart attack.

I have always renamed my pets something new but I for the life of me could not get away from calling Karoma, just that after I tamed him. Nor could I identify a name good enough for the wolf spirit. So I stuck with that name. Not to show off, or lack of imagination but that's just who he is to me. LOL

For me, they have a name, and if appropiate, they should keep it. Thre are some name that just have to be changed, or abreviated, but to me most of them should keep the name they came with.

It's the same principle. If I'm playing Chrono Trigger, Chrono is Chrono to me even though I have the option to nickname him whatever I want, you know?
I do this mostly, especially in Final Fantasy 7. Since I have beaten that game probably 8 or 9 times (can't remember) I generally just stick with the same names. Except Red XIII I always name Nanaki.

(for those familiar with FF7) when you go to RedXIII's village they will reveal his real name is Nanaki. If you name him Nanaki there will be one line that says something like, "Nanaki... Your real name is Nanaki???" Ahh the small pleasures in RPG life :)

I name my pets after npcs out of respect. After spending days or weeks looking for a rare and mystical spirit beast that is kind enough to befriend me I just don't feel that fluffy is going to cut it. I like the idea of having Loque'nahak by my side instead of fluffy or whatever dumb name seems to be popular. This is mainly because I think it seems arrogant or condescending to think that you "own" a creature that spectacular. That said I broke my own rule on karoma and named him Kasper. I also name my non rares (my oild covered wolf is "BigBadWolf") and I have named a few obscure rarespawns such as the yellow worm ("rarespawn"). I guess its almost an rp thing for me even though I generally don't rp.

I will not say... it is a secret, but has been mentioned on these boards within th elast week or so)
I wasn't able to make that work, btw. When I go to rename my pet, I get an empty text box that I can type the new pet name into. I'll see if I can get a screenshot of it later.

To each his/her own really. I kept the names "Sambas" and "Terrorpene." I wish all rares had single-word names to be honest. Some mobs, for example, people will go to lengths to actually tame the rare itself instead of taming a common look-alike. Would be cool if they allowed for "the real thing" to be called what it is called in the wild.

I can see why people might get mad though--hunters sitting at rare spawn locations with pets named after their corresponding rare spawn to mess with NPC Scan (granted just having the pet out still messes it up).

For me they keep their names. Had a name when I tamed it, who am I to change it type thing. I consider them more of a partner with its own identity. Excpet Loque. He's called Migraine now and can you guess why? LOL I use the funky characters when I have to, like Grunter had the little dots over the u in his name while I had him (oh why did they make him a hellboar??? I still weep about that). Anyway, I just like to do it like that, and to this day when I grab Migraine I say "I'm a go get Loque" Could be too that my first to level 80 was a warlock and the idea behind the demons is that they summon a 'sentient' being from the nether to do their bidding... I tame sentient beings on the hunter...

I know a lot of other people rename their pets which is cool too. I love seeing some of the creative names people come up with. Personal preferences...
