What grinds me gears?

Doing something wrong by not doing something wrong.

You may only understand this if you are married and/or if you have/had a teenage daugther.
I don't really feel like this is so much the "Post-Modern" era as much as its the "Pre-Zombie-Apocalpse" era. I consider myself more of a forward thinking guy and an era that just won't die is just as feasible as a coming era, where the dead come back.

You know what gets me?

Bad teeth/narrow jaw.

From my dad, I get a narrow jaw. My mom gives me the gift of not losing teeth very fast. At 15, I still have the majority of my baby teeth. This gets worse because now teeth are growing in on top of them, bending them out of place. So I have a row of baby teeth, then adult teeth on top. Meaning I get teeth pulled, and braces. It's a pain to eat, and my mouth hurts frequently. I've got like six different loose baby teeth that refuse to come out. I have one really loose one that's bothering me that just won't leave my mouth hole!

I completely understand that. It's that way with sisters too.

How bad things always seem to happen all at once.

I just found Ryuki, my blue tongue skink, dead on his basking rock. :( I know the saying is bad things come in threes, and I really hope that's not the case because I don't think I could handle losing a third pet.

Normally I'd offer necromancy, but I don't think that would help...

There are serious problems with it.

1) 47 millions Americans are uninsured. Reasons vary:

A) their employers don't provide it and they can't afford the price of private insurance premiums
B) insurance companies won't accept them due to pre-existing conditions (those people are often the sickest and need it most!!)
C) They are unemployed and have lost their employer provided coverage and, being unemployed cannot afford private insurance (which the employed often can't even afford!)
D) They are children of uninsured parents. 20% of the uninsured in the US are children. :(

Being uninsured puts even basic healthcare out of the reach of many people. Most uninsured are low-income and cannot afford the huge, huge prices of doctor's visits and medical procedures. Bankruptcy due to medical debt is not uncommon!
In some areas, there are free/low cost clinics. Some areas. But even where there are, there is not the continuity of care (meaning: different doc each time who isn't familiar with patients) or follow up that the insured recieve.
Having been uninsured myself for 9 years and having health problems, I can attest to the wretchedness and fear involved.

That's the uninsured...there's also the problem of underinsured. Dropped coverage, gaps in coverage, denial of claims...
And the fact that here, health care coverage is tied to employment for the bulk of people. With the job loss in this recession, I would wager that the number of uninsured has in fact risen. :(

Yes, there are problems.

The US is ranked 37th in the world in health care. We spend two times the amount that other industrialized countries do, but with pathetic results. Yet people and politicians refuse to stop fussing and fighting and do something. People say "well, up in Canada, there's a waiting list! We can't have that kind of thing here!" WTF? Really? Try not having insurance! How's "never" instead of a short wait? How's that work for ya? Huh?

Micheal Moore made a documentary called Sicko a few years back. Check it out.
Also, http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline ... ndex2.html
is a pretty good comparison with Germany, Taiwan, Japan, UK and Switzerland.

This video seems appropriate here...

Another point worth noting is that personal bankruptcy is not possible in the same way in Scandinavia. I was shocked to hear that it's possible to declare yourself bankrupt in North America - in Scandinavia that's something companies do... To go bankrupt over medical bills is ludicrous. Access to medical care should really be a basic right.
