In Chinese myth, there's four beasts representing the cardinal directions: the white tiger of the west, the red bird of the south, the black tortoise (and snake) of the north, and the blue dragon of the east. With the exception of one being an ox, it's a pretty clear reference. I wonder if we'll end up seeing a Warcraft re-imagining of the 5th and less famous of the beasts, the yellow dragon of the center.
Seiryu the Azure Dragon, Suzaku the Vermillion Bird, Byakko the White Tiger, Genbu the Black Tortoise, and Huanglong the Yellow Dragon.
It is kind of odd that they changed Genbu from a turtle to an ox.
On a related note, the Quilin (which is the name of the Shisa-like creatures in Mists) is a unicorn-like chimera that sometimes takes the place of Byakko and Huanglong in the various stories.
