We're not saying we want to tame 'everything'. We're discussing. What's wrong with that? It's a hunter pet forum after all, what do you want us to talk about..?

I was just saying I don't think hunters should get dragons as pets. *shrug*

And on that note, I don't see how cranes make a viable pet for fighting.. far too skinny. Even skinnier than a BE

Sentience has nothing to do with skinning since whatever you're skinning is usually dead....so sentience really doesn't come into play. Let's try not to say "Well if we cant tame, we can't skin either!" cause those are totally different topics and have zero relevance.

I think cow and some of us are saying "Dead horse...it's been beaten to the point theres nothing left to beat" when it comes to dragons/phoenixes. It was talked about in Cata Beta. It was talked about in even Wrath Beta. I think, personally, unless Blizz changes something, we should leave the dragon/phoenix thing to die. I just facepalm everytime I see it come up again...and again....and again....and again. I'm pretty sure I'm not alone on that. It'd be cool if they did let us someday but its extremely unlikely and better off left alone rather than brought up everytime a new dragon model is dug up.

Ok, I'm wrong, my questions are invalid wrong and irrelevant as usual, and of course, I can't pose topics for discussion. Move along.

We have all sorts of hunters here, from excited new recruits to jaded grizzled veterans. No need to negatively comment multiple times on threads addressing topics seen before; make a point, move on. Dragon pet discussions want to be hugged, after all!

I think this thread has run its course. While I'm not going to lock it, I'd like to point out the following:

- The thread was based on pure speculation, which is fine. We don't know much at this point and it's nice to speculate.
- People posted their reasons for and against on why they *guess* they wouldn't be tameable. Again, that's good discussion. It couldn't have ended that way. But...
- People started to post their arguments as unassailable facts and came across as arrogant and dismissive
- People responded by either (i) acting hurt or (ii) responding with like levels of aggression
- Everyone left feeling bad

Please stop :)

I think it's still a good discussion topic. Frankly, I haven't been on Petopia or even WoW as long as some people so just because a topic is boring to some doesn't mean it has to be boring for all. Dragonkin are obviously something that a lot of hunters would like to tame, whether or not it makes much sense or not. I'm pretty sure if the idea became popular enough, Blizzard might listen and add something special in for us. Who knows? I mean, look what happened in the Molten Front. Hunters basically got some special treatment in there. I don't personally see any reason as to why dragonkin couldn't be a hunter's pet. If we can use them as mounts then it easily makes sense to use them as pets - basically, instead of them committing themselves to be your mount and fly you around, they commit themselves to be your companion and fight by your side. I easily see how this could make sense. I don't think they would work exactly the same as normal pets, however. You wouldn't be able to go out and tame one just like that. Maybe hunter's would be given a special questline and at the end of it you can pick a colour/type? I haven't thought about it in great detail since it's not a topic I'm *hugely* interested in but I would like to defend the people that really do care about it. It's not silly, it's not over-used and it's certainly not boring.

And oh my goodness, that gif. I think my heart just broke a little. (Talking about tameable dragons kinda *is* on-topic though, since it's about a possible dragonkin species being tamed.)

Edit: Whoops. Posted before I saw your post Wain, sorry. ^^

*giggles at the pic*

*AHEM!* Points were being made as they came up. Disagreements are allowed, afterall. So long as it doesn't spiral into flaming. :)

I did a little digging into the Phoenix bit. http://www.wowpedia.org/Phoenix
Blood Mages summon them, it seems. They're not beasts(technically). They're elementals of fire. Blood Mages are...well....Fire Mages. So it makes sense. I wish the mages could get them like they did in Warcraft 3. I might have more incentive to play one. But as a hunter pet? Still not going to be possible as they are summoned from another plane with the use of a spell(ghostwolf shaman thing doesn't count. That was a bug and technically wasn't supposed to be able to be done).

Edit: Oops! Sorry Wain. ^^; Wasn't trying to be dismissive. I was just using my dragon knowledge. I'm a big fan of dragons and their draconic lore. I tend to defend it heavily when someone wants to tame a sentient race(which is slavery then). Passion tends to come off stronger than intended.

Edit2: Chao - Thats an interesting thing....not necessarily tame but can get a special whistle to call upon your friend to help you in battle and they want to out of their own free will. I could get behind that.

Please, continue the discussion if you think you have anything new to add. But remember that almost nothing is a known fact at this point and phrase your argument accordingly :)

Perhaps then it might become more than a hunter-exclusive thing. Not sure I'd like that then though, since everyone would be running around with a dragon beside them...

I think your idea is something worth playing around with. The dragon would probably only be there for like.....a minute or something. It goes off back to its flight after then and is on like an hour cooldown or something.

See I'd like it if everyone could get a item that lets them do that for a bit with a cooldown then it being a hunter only thing. That would make more sence than it just being hunter only.

EDIT: that quest you where talking about saving the dragons I can see working just as well as a player wide quest. I don't see why only hunters can save things or befreind them I mean not tame just becomeing friends if you will.

See the thing is I accept the premise that we shouldn't tame a sentient race. But, if we shouldn't tame them, we shouldn't skin or eat that either. That smacks of cannibalism. (Collecting of fallen dragon scales is a different thing.)

Otherwise, what you are saying is that dragons are revered and sentient, and I shouldn't tame them, but it's quite fine to go out and farm them for scales, leather, and some dragon flanks? That doesn't seem consistent.

Now if you are saying that's ok, I've got a bottle of A-1 and I'm looking at Mulgore.. ;)

The point is, Blizz is inconsistent in it's lore regarding what can be tamed and not, and what can be skinned and eaten.

I can see your point, though usually the dragons we're killing/eating/skinning are proto drakes(which are merely borderline sentient and still act like...well...animals) and black dragons (Well...they WERE evil[not anymore though] and you killed them in self defense. In the wild, if you need food and protection......you just killed a dragon.....there's atleast a weeks worth of food or more in one carcass and a dragons scales make the best armor.). However it's not cannibalism. Cannibalism is defined by eating your own species. Hunting for food and supplies is just the food chain....predator and prey. Nothing to do with sentience.

But.. If we can kill/skin/eat, I don't see how taming is any different, if you are looking at it as predator/prey, from my perspective anyway. The dragons might not like it, but they should object to the other things as well.

I'm still looking at Mulgore with that bottle of A-1.

But really, I'm trying to figure out what the pattern is for Blizz's rationale in determining what can and cannot be tamed (or skinned, eaten, etc). The aren't terribly consistent.

Taming is different than skinning/killing/eating......by a very wide margin. I already stated why so I'm not gonna repeat it. (and who ever said they didn't object to that sort of thing? That's kind of silly to say. We hear about a man getting killed by a pride of lions. Do I like that it happened? No. Do I accept it's nature and the way of things? Yes. The man became lunch for something else that needed to live.)

They go by many factors. It's not rocket science. Here's a few questions...

Does it have sentience?
Is it a beast of sorts?
Does it look like a serious hunter would have this?(as in not for the bling, for its actual usefulness)

That's just some examples where they probably would ask themselves at a board meeting. (I don't work for them. I'm just going off basic logic on determining stuff and these are questions I think that may come up.)

So since this is going in circles now, it's best we move onto a different reason.

I have a solution! Mechanical dragons made by engineers that are pets! Kinda like ...a bigger, more dragony version of: http://www.wowwiki.com/Gnomish_Battle_Chicken

:)

or that: http://www.wowhead.com/item=10576/mithr ... dragonling

alas, though, the models we've seen thus far do not look engineered by a gnome...
