Goblins get a lame starter pet too.
Maybe it's because I (and the rest of you of course) had to do 10 levels with NO pet...but I think they SHOULD ALL get "lame" (read: common, low level skin/model) pets, unless what are now higher level/untameable become common, tameable, low-level (grr!) beasts. Fancy pets should be something you earn as you level, something you look forward to. Not just, oh here, have this bad-ass tiger no one used to be able to tame but drooled over or purple tallstrider the used to accessible only at lvl 70 with a flying mount!
Sour grapes...grumble...kids these days...you know back in my day we had to walk uphill both ways in the snow...grumble

I'd rather ask, why the Night Elf Hunters are getting a skin that's been in-game but untameable until now. ^^
Because obviously the skin is going to be made tameable? If I remember right the spotted skin already existed, the spotted riding tiger I mean, but it was only implemented in Wrath. So it's pretty much answered that eventually the tiger will be tameable. Because all the other pets are eventually tameable.

If I remember right there's going to be tameable black diseased bears. At level 9.

I'm to be honest fine with it, the tiger mount for night elfs has a VERY good reason.. There ARE Frostsaber COMPANIONS in Darnassus so obviously they were meant to be..just that companions. They will more than likely make it a tameable skin somewhere else for those who dont have night elf hunters but in the meantime I like them. I'll def be getting one simply because I love riding tiger skins and that happens to be one of my favorite ones. Night elfs have a very strong tie to those saber cats though too so /shrug - makes perfect sense.

To be honest, I see NOTHING wrong with these skins being available at low levels. And you know what? Fancy looking pets aren't always the best, cause practically EVERYONE has them due to the fact that they're those fancy pets that you look forward to while leveling. I personally think that the lower level looks are better cause you don't see 'em as much! Like the cheetahs (Or jaguars/leopards), I don't see them AT ALL, but I see cats like the white/black lions, aqua tiger, and such others a lot. In fact, I'm getting quite tired of all the Humars/Echys/Rak'Shiris that I see everywhere. What about the lesser seen kitties? Why does everyone have to go and have the fancy pets? Just to be "unique"? The ironic thing is, you aren't unique if you have one of those pets, all you are is like everyone else with that pet.

I've had my grump. I'm good now. ;)
You know, Senna, you're right. Fancy pets aren't really that fancy. I see 20 Loques to every plain white cat, etc. Never, ever see a mountain lion.
And Nevar, yes, the NE have a good reason to have them. And I should be happy that this probably means I can tame one at some point.

I meant lame as not something I see fitting into their character. IMO the goblins would make more sense with boars.

Yay for having grumps! I kinda needed to have my own little grump about "fancy" pets, hehe. I guess I've just been rather annoying over that sort of thing.. Since one of my biggest pet peeves when it comes to Pokemon OCs is Umbreon's Shiny form.. Now, Umbreon is dark grey with yellow rings on its body and red eyes, Shinies have blue rings and yellow eyes instead.. Over half of the Umbreon OCs I see are Shiny or have some sort of unique marking. WHAT IS SO WRONG WITH MAKING A NORMAL UMBREON CHARACTER?! I admit, my main Umbreon character does have slightly different eyes.. But still!

Okay, yeah, I'm totally going off-topic here XD;

I always saw rare spawns and rare/unusual skins as being rewards for hunters sticking it out and leveling up high enough to tame them. You pay your dues, basically. But no one should START with one.

Course, I'm a little selfishly glad the brown tallstrider ISN'T the Tauren starting pet...because mine will remain unique then. :)

I'm looking for a natural look, not a fancy one.
I never ever even had the idea for go and look for a spirit beast.

I know this is fantasy but still, I want a natural look on my companion.

Or it has to just fit my characters back story. Like the white bear for my orc hunter, when she was kidnapped and kept as a slave by ice trolls in Dun Morogh, fled one day and found the cub beside his dead mother, took him along until she was caught by dwarves and Magni Bronzebeard himself ordered that fierce little girl with her also fierce fuzzy white companion being brought to Orgrimmar.
It was rather a tense moment when the orcish guards saw those dwarves coming up at Orgrimmars front gate and were surprised to see them unarmed and leave a little girl behind when retreating. Thrall was rather clueless when the girl only spoke troll language. As she was not to be separated from her white bear (which stood out like a sore thumb in Orgrimmar), Vol'Jin talked her into a training as a hunter and ordered her to learn orcish language.
Until today, she still doesn't have a clue which clan she comes from.

But that wasn't the topic, was it  Sorry...

Mania wrote:What's I read on the beta forums (actually from the alpha testing, but there you are) was that the pet bar used to show up for starter pets but would go away the first time they leveled -- and that now it doesn't usually show up at all.

I'd love to get some more confirmation on that, though.

That is correct. [On the closed beta] At L.1 you have the pet bar, but as soon as you level to L.2 it goes away til L.10.
At that point you have to train a skill called "Control Pet" (or something), and then dismiss your pet and call it back in order to get the bar to come back. I am guessing if you don't learn Control Pet you'll never see the bar (only guessing because I would never not train it).

There is a bug in the beta right now that for some reason if your pet disappears there is a chance that it will stay gone. You can't revive it and you can't call it... the game says you already control a pet or something. (this has happened to all levels and all races with hunters).

Another bug in the beta that I found last night was with stables. The 20 slots aren't implemented yet, so the actual stable still looks like it does on live. I used Call Stabled Pet last night to ditch one of my pets (I had all slots filled plus one with me) so I could tame Ghost Saber, and when I went to moving my pets around I saw that the pet icons for 3 of my pets were actually stacking on top of each other (it seemed) on my active slot... but when I went to put them back my Skoll, Arcturis, and Aotona pets didn't show up. After awhile of freaking out I messed with it for about 30min and was able to somehow get Aotona back... but I couldn't retrieve Skoll or Arcturis. (here is the kicker... throughout the whole thing Arcturis was still showing as my active pet from within the stable, but he wasn't showing up in the world.)

Thinking that the game might still see them as being in my stable (or me having Arcturis "out") I tried to tame Ghost Saber and the game let me, but I could still go into the stable and put Ghost Saber into the stable and it would still show Arcturis as my active pet (but only in the stable).

I am not too bothered with it really... considering that it is a beta and it isn't like we get to keep the characters... thankfully.

Not being able to keep the characters had me thinking of something last night while I was flying around in STV looking at the new Monkey models... how bad would it suck if I flew down and killed ONE pirate and it dropped the Hyancith Macaw pet... yeah...

Also, as something to think about... when you copy a premade character over to the beta you get a Raven Lord mount to use for the beta (and a Copper Drake)...

That stacking glitch is on live if you try to switch pets mounted.

Actually it's live period, mounted or unmounted, as I've switched pets just fine mounted. It's been ingame since... erf, before Wrath was released, I remember that. Think it started happening just before, or just after Patch 2.4.4 or whatever. The infamous Growl Breaking patch, which was quite fun for those of us who had either bad enough or good enough gear, depending on your view point, to suffer from this.

But unlike beta the live glitch is easily fixed by reloading UI, relogging or exiting game completely. As I had this happen a few times, and the most boggling of all was when I released a pet, mounted up, flew to Thrallmar, dismounted.

The pet had returned and was non interactive.

Yeah, but neither time I was mounted. It kind of threw me for a loop and when I tried to "fix" it... it kept getting worse.

Also, I just realized that this thread was 3 pages long, heh. Sorry if what I said up they was said earlier.

We'll only have autoattack with out melee weapon. We're not intended to be melee, and really, we suck at it. I mean yeah, soloing it doesn't matter, do whatever you want, but you know, the kills take longer and all that.
No they are removing some melee abilities, not all. At least thats how I read it.
Belated reply to an old post/quote but.

If they're removing most/some of our melee abilities. Why are they not allowing us to shoot from melee range. Our melee abilities are understandably **** to Abysmal to laughably WEAK. Our only real savior was imp wing clip, which they took out entirely. Ignore the fact half the other classes with snares can do them better. The rest can glyph them better, or talent them better.

Even Concussive shot, was nerfed to an extent, preventing the stun it used to do, in lue of 2 more seconds of dazing. I mean that's really going to stop the war or rogue incoming.

Deterrence is buggy as hell atm, I had it break Tame Beast when I attempted to solo the beast a few hours ago. It didn't deflect any damage at all- and it didn't deflect any damage the other day from spell, ranged, melee. Front or back. But paladins can bubble for a full 10 seconds pvp and more, pve if I remember right.

Our traps don't auto snare, they can be resisted and ontop of it I think they can now be broken by rogues all the more easier. I've seen rogues break a trap behind me, and I have a flare surrounding us both. I've also had rogues like resist flare. Granted I've not PVP'd in a while but.

With this change to focus I DEMAND hunters get the ability to shoot point blank. There is no 'minimum range' for a 'ranged' weapon. It's not a knife, it can be used 1 inch from the target, or a hundred feet [depending on the gun] :|

Also, Off topic post, is off topic. Flee.

Huh... Am I the only person that likes getting a special pet on the Tauren? Starting out with a skin that's otherwise untameable until level 70 is an awesome racial. All races should have one!

The other starting pets are pretty boring by comparison. I didn't even notice that the cat was special, it looked like one of the other white tigers.
