Re: Lolspiders [Warning: Spider images for Arachnophobes]
Are they that tiny? What about the one chasing the laser? It looked pretty big. I remember the black and white ones in the garden where about the size of my fingernail. I was hoping there was a pet version. I tend towards the unusual pets, just like in game.
Please don't kill me, I'm trying to love you

Re: Lolspiders [Warning: Spider images for Arachnophobes]
Oh man, you guys have just stumbled upon one of my favorite topics - spiders. Love 'em to death, always have ever since I was little. My mom and brother would be trying to kill them as I'm doing my darndest to rescue them. I now have eight tarantulas, here is one of them (the other pics are at home):
Lamyka (nhandu coloratovillosus)

I also have:
-grammostola rosea (rose hair): Sedona
-grammostola aureostriata (golden knee): Navi (named after the Zelda character, not Avatar [though I do love that movie])
-avicularia avicularia (guyana pink toe) - Gypsy
-aphonopelma hentzi (oklahoma brown) - Tael (before I discovered it was female, hehe)
-aphonopelma seemani (goes by different common names) - Stella
-haplopelma lividum (cobalt blue - nasty little bugger, but beautiful) - Reina
-cyclosternum fasciatum (tiger stripe/rump/etc.) - Caspia

Edit: added their names

The only spider I would let near me is a tarantula as long as they don't bite. I HATE spiders from medium to small in size, cause I know they're the most venomous in most cases.

Re: Lolspiders [Warning: Spider images for Arachnophobes]
No one can ever say with 100% certainty that even a "docile" tarantula won't bite. They aren't domesticated animals and more than likely don't understand that a human holding them means no harm. Any little thing can make them feel threatened and they could bite. There's always that potential. I've never been bitten by mine but I always expect it. So for your safety and theirs (most people would jerk or fling their hand when bitten, most likely injuring or killing the tarantula), it's best you don't try to handle them. Admire them from a safe distance and everything will be ok.Harpier wrote:The only spider I would let near me is a tarantula as long as they don't bite. Mm hmm, Tarantulas definitely can bite, there are just many species who are likely not to. As Rhyela said, it's best to always have that expectation at the back of your mind just in case something should happen and you aren't taken by surprise.

Re: Lolspiders [Warning: Spider images for Arachnophobes]
The Old-World ones (from Asia, India, etc.) are nasty little buggers, at least from my experience. They don't have urticating hairs so their only defense is to bite (if their defensive posture doesn't work, that is). The New-World tarantulas (Americas, North and South) have urticating hairs that for the most part, they'll use first before resorting to biting. So as long as you try to handle a New-World tarantula, you're probably ok. The worst that's ever happened to me is getting hair-flicked by an unhappy pre-molt juvenile. Doesn't sound too bad, but those hairs dig in and itch/burn/sting for days! It's like a paper cut on 'roids, lol. Now, I do have a haplopelma lividum (cobalt blue is the retail name I think) that I won't go near unless I have to. She's a mean, mean little sucker. I had to xfer her to a bigger tank once and it took like...an hour. I had to gently try to coax her into her new tank and she wasn't having any of it. I was using a paper towel tube to just gently nudge her in the direction I wanted her to go. She beat the living crap out of that tube - bit it, smacked it, bit it some more.....needless to say that's one tarantula where the roach gets thrown into the tank, lol.Vephriel wrote:Mm hmm, Tarantulas definitely can bite, there are just many species who are likely not to. From my experience, nasty little buggers are the ones that appear when you reach for the remote or a cookie or something and they crawl up on your hand...Rhyela wrote:The Old-World ones (from Asia, India, etc.) are nasty little buggers, at least from my experience.

If you have tarantulas doing that ... well, I think you have more interesting problems than I do.Rottingham wrote:From my experience, nasty little buggers are the ones that appear when you reach for the remote or a cookie or something and they crawl up on your hand...

Re: Lolspiders [Warning: Spider images for Arachnophobes]
NO! not tarantulas
My bad, although reading through the last few posts it would seem as though I meant it. Naw, they are these 2 inch long brown things with a bigger head then body. They scare the crap out of me... about a year ago one ran up my shoulder during school, and the girl I was talking to freaked out and ran to the other side of the room. the teacher hated spiders, so... well... let's just say the ending for him didn't involve... you know... living...

Aww all the pictures are adorable! Ive always loved spiders, i used to have a pet black widow i kept in a bottle, i brought her home to show my parents and when i opened the top it sprung out and bit my mom.
I found an adorable video on the jumping spiders courtship dance, its like the one posted earlier but faster paced.

We get a bunch of big wolf spiders here, we had a big one in the shower, i heard my grandma scream and went in, she was going to kill it
so i got a towel and it crawled on and i took it oustide. The thing was almost as big as my hand!
Ive always wanted one. There used to be one at the petstore that would come up and say hi. If you touched the class he would crawl on it, i got a picture of him.
The second one is a wolfy that i saved from the dogs water bucket.

I can't believe my eyes! A pic from a pet store where the tarantula isn't on sand!!!!! I don't know why the store employees automatically assume that every tarantula on the planet lives on sand, it makes me so upset!

Re: Lolspiders [Warning: Spider images for Arachnophobes]
Not a spider, but I figured it was close enough in context to put here. >.>
As much as I love insects and creepy crawlies, wasps are probably the one and only thing that actually freak me out. It's not a phobia per se - I'm not scared of seeing them in pictures, and if they're not able to get to me I'm fine. But if there's one in a room with me, or if I'm outside and they start hovering around my drink, I run in the opposite direction. I've managed to never get stung by one before, so I've got this mentality that they must be after me.
Anyways, found this image today and it made me laugh so hard, so I thought I'd share. xD
