AVATAR IS SUCH A GOOD MOVIE OMG.
Re: AVATAR IS SUCH A GOOD MOVIE OMG.
Some of the data that he used in the movie was dated.
So some of it is not accurate "today."
And yes, some of his statements should have had more information to them.
i.e. "...That the polar icecap will be completely gone..."
This is very likely to happen during the summer months, but not year round.
Also the vast majority of sea level rise is actually from thermal expansion, if I remember my paper right... about 58% actually.
But inputs from Antarctica and Greenland can have an impact, and do.
As for the Polar Bear statement, sure his animation might have been a bit off, but it is far from being totally wrong.
In the paper "Observations of mortality associated with extended open-water swimming by polar bears in the Alaskan Beaufort Sea" scientists Charles Monnett and Jeffrey Gleason observed 4 dead polar bears floating in the water.
Yes, it was after a windstorm. And they are common in the arctic.
Strictly speaking, with the populations that they were observing this is a noticeable number.
It also states that this number is probably "...almost certainly represents an underestimate
of the actual number of polar bears affected."
Sure there are much bigger factors on polar bear survival than drowning at sea.
But sea ice is the BIG factor in this, and its retreat is having an impact on polar bear populations.
So saying that polar bears drowning at sea was totally wrong is a false statement.
This is actually true.
(FYI, I live in Alaska and study marine biology)

This is why.
You do know that there are cars that are big and can still be more fuel efficient than most hybrid cars? Smaller cars aren't also entirely better. What about when you need to move things. Alot of things? We used to have what would probably be dubbed a mom van, before it broke down. What happened when gas was $4.00 a gallon?
People stopped buying SUV's and instead purchased smaller more fuel efficient cars.
What happened to Ford and Chevy because of this?
The people that also bought the more fuel efficient cars, as you claim them, also have the money to burn/spend for such a deal. We do not. So we just drive smartly. You don't have to trade in if you buy sensibly. There are also SUV;s which are hybrids if I remember right, to boot too.
You do know Al Gore is a complete and utter lying scumbag who only wants fame and fortune. Correct? He overhypes and tries to cause panic and fear with his grossly overestimated fear mongering stats of the world apocalypse. You also ignore the fact that while he spews this BS out, he still indulges in the sins he and other liberals who ALSO STILL INDULGE IN, want the COMMON AMERICAN, IE ME, to STOP using. He wants everyone but himself to go green or go home.(Look at "An Inconvenient Truth," and how it has help change national policy around the world. Yes. Really.)
Mean he bought a house on beach front property in California. Which afaik he claims is going to be long gone 'soon'. Hmm.
So yeah you helped prove once again why people like me never buy into movies like this. Or PROPAGANDA

Show me the vehicle that you are talking about.
Here is a list of the most fuel efficient cars.
Take a look.

Moving things?
Sure, maybe a smart car is too small, but take a look at the other hybrids out there.
Some of them have plenty of space in them.
Oh, if you rent a moving van for just a few bucks you can actually save time and money moving.
Just because some portion of the population cannot afford to purchase a vehicle, does not mean that people didn't.
Please. If you take a look at sales figures for fuel efficient cars in the last few years you will see what I am talking about.

Actually, Al Gore has dedicated the last 20+ years fighting for Climate Change to be taken seriously, and he has taken allot of flack for it.Ryai wrote:You do know Al Gore is a complete and utter lying scumbag who only wants fame and fortune. Fame and Fortune?
You don't know what you are talking about.
If you are going to make claims about someones personal motivation, you BETTER know them PERSONALLY.
And I just know you don't.
If you look at any of the studies that are being published, about climate change, ocean acidification, etc, You would KNOW better.
I HAVE read some of the research, and it is pretty damning.
Of course there is more research being published everyday, and more research needs to be done.
But over hype? No. Definitely Not.
Take a look for yourself, Googlescholar is a great tool, but there are many others.
Here is a sample article, but there are tons more.

As to this "Sins" thing with Al Gore.
Really now?
Yes he lives in a mansion. So yes, his electric bill is pretty big.
But, you do know his house has solar panels and a geo-thermal generator right?
Did he have that stuff put in because people were giving him flack?
Maybe. Maybe not.
You would have to ask him.
http://www.factcheck.org/2009/06/al-gores-mansion/
Please.
Educate yourself on this stuff if you are going to talk about it.
Otherwise you just point out just how much you do not know.

This is a picture of signatures of the Kyoto protocol. Green means signed. Grey means hasn't signed yet. Red means not signed, and not likely to any time soon. The Kyoto protocol is the bare minimum to decelerate pollution, global warming etc. There is ONE (significant) country that hasn't signed, and that also happens to be one of the biggest polluters.
And no, this is not personal criticism, it is criticism against a certain kind of thinking, basically "Let the rest of the world do it, I like my heated deskchair and my excessive car!". We ALL need to help with this. And look who's not helping.

Re: AVATAR IS SUCH A GOOD MOVIE OMG.
Was supposed to be about a movie, Avatar?
The effect is similar to a thread about Twilight.
Haters gonna hate. Fans gonna love.
And then derailment comes.
This is why we can't have nice things.
This thread is now about this:

Fantastic show, btw. I really loved it.
Maybe some of our good Mods could split it into a thread about the movie and a thread about threats to our Eco system.

The most hilarious thing about that picture is how, beside America, only countries that haven't signed it are ones in complete anarchy, Afghanistan (recovering), Western Sahara and Somalia.Saturo wrote:

Part of the problem with this protocol is that developing nations (who produce a huuuuge amount of pollution) don't have to monitor their pollution the same as countries who are already developed. Yes, the US needs to not be a baby about it but I can see where it's a little unfair. What needs to be done, imo, is developing countries should be receiving help from the US and the other big, developed nations to further improve anti-pollution methods.Saturo wrote:

Also, I think Turgus is awesome.
And I really liked Avatar. The dragon mount things were just the coolest things I had seen in a while. I also thought the naavi (sorry if it's misspelled) just looked amazing! Wish I was a cool blue color... I wish I hadn't been so cheap and had gone to see it in IMAX or something.

Re: AVATAR IS SUCH A GOOD MOVIE OMG.
Wow this got off topic. I'll add my 1 cent in for the heck of it. In the long run it really does not matter what we do, once our sun gives out, this entire solar system is done for. Not trying to be nihilist or negative, but you can't deny it, the sun is the main thing to decide our fate. Unless we can figure out a way not only to travel, but colonise other planets outside of our solar system. But even then, galaxies don't last forever either. We're doomed yo
Wut?
