For those curious about the 6th gen legendaries...here's their inspiration from a forum poster on Serebii:

If you've heard of Norse Mythology, you'll know that Zygarde is based off the demonic serpentine creature which lives under the roots of the World Tree. It is said that the roots keep it trapped there, for if it were to escape, it would cause untold destruction on the world.
Xerneas is based on the four stags, each with a different coloured gem in its antlers (Red, yellow orange and purple). These four stags live at the base of the World Tree and are said to gaze up at the top branches. Xerneas is seen looking up at the sky in the very first X and Y trailer.
Yveltal is based on the blind eagle that lives at the top the tree, which is said to be able to look into the souls of people. Yveltal's eyes are light blue, possibly indicating blindness.
