I don't think there's any way for them to track people who just used it to preview possible offspring - it's the people who actually went through with the breeding that will be in trouble.

I would however like to warn that this might be one of those things that have been slowing the site down lately. It causes some strain on the server, as it's still generating every single preview.

Aye, the only way I could see it causing lag/strain on the server is by having to access the databasing system they use to create and view all the dragons. My man insists that it's only on your end but they gotta generate from somewhere (or I misunderstood what he said earlier). I think their databasing system in general might be what causes the site so much lag, especially since they have that random dragon generator on the front page.

The preview images have to come from somewhere, and they have to be stored somewhere in the server even for a moment in order to show the preview on the site.

Overall there's a lot of random generation going on, and it's possible that's what's causing at least some of the lag.

I didn't get a chance to before this maintenance or whatever and I was already running low on food stores from when we had the long down time and FR used my own food to feed my dragons... I couldn't gather any though so.. UGH. -_-

UPDATE 2 (15:07): Sorry, still workin' on the Dominance display issue.

UPDATE 1: We have found the source of a breeding exploit and are working to correct it at this time. We have also corrected a display issue that was causing Dominance figures to not update correctly. The effect of this fix should be apparent in about 15 minutes. We do not have an ETA for the site coming back up, but are working to hammer out the problem as fast as possible.

Hmm. So they did have a giant design flaw... Though I'm very curious if the bug is linked to it. Still leaning towards no, mostly because I know there were a few nests that wouldn't hatch before the previewing hack was released....

I'm very interested in it all, actually. I feel like two glitches (the other being Dominance) happening right around the same time someone figures out how to preview dragons before they're off cooldown is mostly bad timing, but I'm really interested in finding out how it all happened.

I think the dominance thing broke cause of what's been going on between Fire and Ice and the hatching thing probaby broke because of the accidental breeding cause people were able to preview dragons through the exploit before people started noting they couldn't hatch their nests, so its probably one or two people accidently bred them and didn't say anything till later, either cause they knew they messed up or they had no idea till they checked back that they did something wrong.

Hard to say and we'll never truly find out but I hope they fix it so you cant preview dragons that aren't off cooldown cause that's the whole reason the site went under unscheduled maintenance for who knows how long. With the dominance bug, that could be fixed in an hour or two, but it could take all day to make it impossible for people to use the preview exploit.

It's like us taming pets with effects. It was never intended, it started out as being purely harmless, then the whole thing exploded and no one is allowed to have pretty effect babies (unless they already have one and Blizz just doesn't feel up to removing them if it they know about it or it was a mistake on their part for not turning the switch off).

They stated that Dominance actually wasn't tracking correctly. I know of at least three people (and I know them personally) who had that bug before people had figured out how to preview dragons off cooldown. Therefore, it's highly unlikely that that is the cause of the bug.

The site is down for maintenance because of all three of those reasons, not any one in particular. The egg bug has been popping up in small numbers since the change the the nest mechanic, not just for the last two days.

My current theory is that these problems (including the loophole that allowed us to preview dragons, as otherwise someone would've figured it out much faster) are all because they have other people who aren't familiar with their personal code messing around in it. While these people are professionals, changing code you're not familiar with can cause a lot of unexpected problems.

We have no idea what caused the egg glitch. Or the dominance one, for that matter. While it's reasonable to assume that the preview hack slowed the site down some, the fact that the egg glitch was popping up in a smaller scale before the preview was released to all of tumblr and the fact that it affects people who did not use the preview hack implies that it is not the underlying cause.

Tho, I wonder... The "This nest will be ready to hatch tomorrow" says (to me) that they haven't managed to fix the bug yet, but the downtime was mostly to check for any nests that shouldn'tve gone through. But if that was what caused the glitch, they'd be able to hatch now...

It seems like they found the underlying cause (or a way to stop it, at least), but haven't been able to reverse the damage yet. They haven't fixed dominance yet, either, so...

I would absolutely LOOOOVE the treasure I could get off this baby if only you'd let me hatch the nest.

This is a dripping wet with emotion beyond annoyance message as I am in absolutely no mood to deal with this shit FR is giving. Fixed what, one problem, the Dominance page, and they go ahead and bring the site back up AND release Skydancers and not address ANY other problems at all that the public can actively see. Not to mention, they released it a DAY before a festival week so guess what? Our festival's going to be half-offline no doubt with this fucking 'cannot connect' bullshit from every user and their parent, sibling, child, all sitting in the marketplace refreshing for skydancer scrolls.

I feel for you. As excited as I am for skydancers, i thought it was silly that they didn't seem to get much real fixing done and now the site's lagged from all the spam refreshing.

They did release them with no announcement and if I remember correctly they fixed the day shorter hatch time and changed it to 6 days to hatch.

I posted a screenie of a discussion I had with someone in the FR thread and I have to wait one day longer on this baby than ones before (I had one nest after the bar was introduced that hatched within 5 days)
