Fly-byes, really the easiest?
After coming across the last 5 of my rare pets by random fly-byes (KK, Karoma, Rex Ashil, and Humar [rehomed] and recently Nuramoc), I've come to realize a few things about this method compared to camping or spawn circling.
1) I was much more surprised when I obtained the pet, as compared to the spawn circling I did for Gondria, which resulted in more of a relief/break than actual surprise and excitement.
2) It is far less stressful. Camping use to get me extremely anxious and jittery. I would find myself irritable and on edge because I spent so long looking for them. With fly-byes, I'm not edgy, I don't get stressed out, I just get happy when I come across it.
3) It may be actually longer time to find the pet, but Fly-byes makes it seem like less time, because it's less time actually spent looking for the rare. When I camped, I usually spent from 5-18 hours camping/circling. And with the same repetition of it all, it felt longer. It got boring and unsatisfying, and almost drove me loony. However, with fly-byes, even if you spend multiple weeks or months doing fly-byes every so often (like in between dailies or dungeons, or even between switching alts), it just feels like less time spent searching.
Granted, many people also do not like fly-byes, and would much rather camp for 2 days straight than wait a whole month for a lucky fly-by, but for many Petopians, as well as myself, fly-byes are far & wide the preferred rare-hunting method.
TL;DR: Give Fly-byes a shot if you find yourself freaking out about camping rares.

Edited to add Gemini my Nuramoc to the list, as I found him while replacing my Obsidian Windserpent that I was forced to abandon to tame Karoma. 2 rares today, NBD.

I can attest to fly-by's being the way to go. When 4.2 launched, I rushed to the firelands and sat at Deth Tilac for three days straight. I never tamed him, only got irritated by steals and kills of the purple beast. When I did fly-by's with Kirix, Ankha, Mogria, and Ban'Thalos, I was a much happier hunter.

Thanks to Zhuge for the pretty siggy and avatarz

This is something I've done ever since Skoll was added, and it's saved me no end of frustration.
Glad to see others doing the same.

I'm a fan of fly-bys as well. I've only ever camped one rare, and didn't succeed in finding it... until I started doing it fly-by style. It's calm, it's relaxing, it's exciting.

Re: Fly-byes, really the easiest?
My flybyes yield... Kirix, Ban, Deth, Solix, found alot of the spiders for other hunters to.
my only camp was for Magria, it became personal with those two cats.
oddly when I camped for Banny I tabbed back in to see him just tamed. Then I randomnly get told hes up the next day.
Skarr was tamed by the method of "ok no more camping for these guys! way to many people here. I am just going to park and log out." After I check the forums. Tabbed back in to log off and he spawns right infront of my face

I like fly-byes unless I REALLY want something, or unless it's something with a huge patrol route and/or lots of campers.
But yeah, just hopping past now & then seems to be a better solution in general

Re: Fly-byes, really the easiest?
i only do fly-bys/run around randomly when haveing anny interest in rares now.
In wrath and early cata i camped all of the spirit beast and other rares, som im all camped out. Just the very idea of sitting in one zone all the time fills me with a void of OMG SPAWN ALREADY YOU!!!!

Re: Fly-byes, really the easiest?
I think I do a combination of camp/fly-bys.
If I'm in the area of a rare I want, I'll check the spawns and maybe stick around for a couple extra rounds before heading off. If I haven't checked on the rare in an hour or so, I'll head on over and stay for a few rounds of checking. If I have nothing to do, I'll try camping for a bit.
My recent Magria tame was a, "Let's go see if Magria's up!" and what do you know, he was.

Re: Fly-byes, really the easiest?
I definitely prefer fly-bys, too
I think it makes everything so much more special, and as Gimlion stated, it cuts out on all the anxiety and frustration. It's how I got Sambas, a cat I've always dearly loved but never had the patience to camp. When I saw him wandering around, my heart just leapt. I think it adds to the realism factor, too - your hunter is just strolling (or flying) by and spots a magnificent beast.

Re: Fly-byes, really the easiest?
What makes a pet or tame special is the hunter. ^_~ I find my Ankha that I camped for is just as special as the Skitterflame I bumbled onto and tamed because no one wanted him. That said, camping can suck and it is important to take a break. Fly-bys work better for some people, camping for others - especially if it's an OMGSQUEEYEESSS! pet. I <3 the Gondria skin and so I wanted some kitties, personally.
I also wanted my Anthiss, but instead ended up with BANANASPIDER(TM).
Granted, I'm grateful I've had the luck I did this patch. This one has been unusually horrible for griefers for a lot of reasons. In the end, you need to go with what works for you. Some people camp and some do not. The important thing is not to risk health, enjoyment of the game or friendships.
And yes, unless it's for a friend, I am done and camped out. @_@

Re: Fly-byes, really the easiest?
I've never really "camped" at all on my hunter. Sure, I'll wait for a couple minutes, then log her out and do something else, but I don't sit there and stare at the screen. It saves me the headache, but it also makes me sad and a little jittery to leave because, knowing my luck with rares, they'll spawn as soon as I take my eye off their area.
