I should start off in saying that I've recently taking a liking to a rogue alt I made, and have been leveling her like mad lately. As I traveled through the zones, I was sure to kill any rares I saw for the extra experience and loot, and that included the tameable ones... I'm so sorry, you pretty white wind serpent I killed -three times-, but.... levels! I'm not sure whether or not I was unlucky or lucky to not come across any of the unique rares. Lucky in the sense I wouldn't feel bad by denying some poor hunter one... unlucky, because, well, all that XP!
I finally got up to my high 50s, and wanting to hit 60 before I touched Outlands I decided to reach it by questing in the Badlands. I ended up questing the whole time with a Death Knight friend, and together we saved murlocs, killed demons, and explored ogre caves. The entire time there I stayed on the lookout for rares. Grunter, Ravage, Clack... whatever that basilisk is. None of them showed, and I made a point to stay far away from Spiteflayer's route. I didn't want to find it, break down and try to find it a hunter for it, then have some other quester come along, kill it, and I would have lost my chance at all that good experience.
But of course, my quests ended up taking me right pasts Spite's place, and sure enough I see him just casually flapping around above my head. Despite the temptation of all the juicy experience and greens, plus the fact that the Blasted Lands rares all have a good chance to drop that crystal that gives you a repeatable quest, which in turn gives you green gear that sells for nice chunks of gold, I broke down and began searching for a hunter. At first I tried looking for hunters 55-60, hoping one would be somewhere nearby. But I only found five total, none of them anywhere near me, and I began to doubt I'd find anyone.
Now wait a second, I told myself, I tend to see a lot of hunters on in my guild, and they talk about pets, a lot, just maybe.... So I checked my guild roster and sure enough I found a level 63 hunter just over in Outlands. So I whispered her, " Hey, I found this rare, unique skinned, etc, etc.... ", and of course expected to get told thanks but no, which I get on a lot of the old world rares by hunters happy with the pet they have, but was surprised by the reaction I did get. " Oh, I've been looking for a pretty new and rare pet! I'd love to! ". I quite happily invited my guildy to the group, and withing minutes she had arrived and tamed the pretty two headed bird. I had missed out on that experience that would have gotten me closer to 60, but had helped a fellow hunter!
Feeling happy that I had found an old world rare such a wonderful home, I continued my questing. While killing the tainted forest creatures, my luck suddenly spiked and not one, but -two- of the quest crystals dropped. I was happy to see them off of something that wasn't a rare mob, so I took them and headed on my way to turn them in. As I'm running there, the usually green forest suddenly turns a nice shade of rusty orange, and I hear this " ROOOOOOOOOOOOOOAR! ", and I stop and try to figure out just what happened.
Oh wait! Deathwing! I begin to frantically run around in search of his scaliness, but no need. He's headed right for me, so I just stop there and wait for that wonderful achievement. I run back to my corpse and... oh, the fire can still kill me. Run back to my corpse -again-, this time making sure to wiggle my way into a fire free spot where I'd be safe. I rez, but unfortunately I'm surrounded so I have to wait a while for the flames to die down.
I'm sitting there, laughing as demons keep spawning inside said flames only to die, when I look down and notice my experience bar slowly creeping up. What? And then I realize that as they're spawning next to me, and then promptly getting burninated ( To make matters funnier, Jarroc Torn-Wing, a quest mob in the area, kept yelling " INFERNO! " every once in a while, as the demons around me burned ), the demons are giving me experience. From dying. Because of Deathwing. By the time it has all finished, I'm sitting mere bubbles from level 60.
I... I think I just got rewarded for helping a hunter tame Spiteflayer. By Deathwing.
After swearing to join the Twilight Cult and serve the master of the Black Flight and all the Old Gods above him, I decided to go hit Hellfire Ramparts and get those last few bubbles of experience, and got a nice pair of sexy new rogue bracers in the process!
Woop!
