Two tames, but wondering if I did the right thing
Two tames, but wondering if I did the right thing
Last night I was doing the Molten Front dailies when NPCscan went off. Anthriss was up. Now, so far, I've had terrible luck with spotting any of the challenge rares. Until last night, I'd seen Kirix twice (tamed him the first time, watched his little killing spree the second) and Deth once (saw the last few seconds of another hunter taming him). Usually, when NPSscan goes off, it's a tamed hunter pet. Anyway, this time it really was Anthriss so I decided to have a look.
There were two Nelf hunters there already. I don't think either knew how the challenge worked. One just tried to flat out tame and died a couple times while I watched. The other aggro'd him, but didn't go into the lava and I never saw lil hearts over his head. I watched the two try to tame, then a Human pally came up and tried to kill Anthriss and died. I already have Kirix and wasn't really after another spider, but I figured I'd try the tame. I dove into the lava, conc shotted, tamed, and had me a yellow spider pet. I talented the lil guy and finished that phase of my dailies. I felt a little bad that the other hunters didn't get to try again, but neither seemed to know how to do the challenge and I didn't want Anthriss killed.
On a whim, I decided to do the Fireplume dailies instead of the Spire ones. I finished up in the cave and went around to get the next batch when I noticed a red dot on tracking. No NPCscan alert, but I knew Skarr and Karkin were already cached. I moused over and saw 'Skarr.' Since we still have a few hunters who take pleasure in naming their tamed rares their 'wild' name and then parking them on the spawn points, I targeted the beast and saw it it really was Skarr, sitting there on his floating rock, contemplating the meaning of life, or hairballs, or whatever.
I'll confess I'm still horrible at Super Mario rock hopping, but when managed it in record time last night. I quickly swapped to MM spec and realized that I had no free stable slots. Well, I didn't really want Anthriss anyway, so my second guilt trip for the night was letting him go after only having him a few minutes.
There were 3 Alliance hunters there. One was just standing and watching. The other two were just trying to flat out tame with Deflection up. After they did a couple attempts each, I went in for a try. Since I don't normally go MM, I wasn't used to my keybindings and accidentally opened with Silencing Shot. Well that was a waste. I ran off, feigned and recovered from the Fieroclast Barrage Skarr'd gotten off. After waiting for one of the other hunters to finish a failed attempt I tried again. This time I hit Silence too early and barely survived. The third time I got it right and tamed successfully.
I was happy that the Alliance hunter that'd just been watching cheered me. I kind of wondered if I should've given the other two some more attempts since they were there first. As with Anthriss, though, there was a non hunter (this time it was an Alliance mage) who tried to jump in and kill Skarr between my 2nd and 3rd attempts. He didn't survive the fireballs and the barrage though. Again, I didn't want to see the rare die when there were people who wanted to tame him, myself included Skarr is the one rare I've been hoping to tame and this was the first time I'd ever seen him.

Re: Two tames, but wondering if I did the right thing
It sounds like you gave the other hunters a fair chance to tame in both cases. If a hunter REALLY wants a rare that badly, they'll have looked up the taming strategy beforehand. Without knowing that Skarr was going to spawn, it seemed like taming Anthriss was the right call at the time. You didn't go in thinking "oh, I'll just abandon him after" - you were really going to give him a shot, despite already having a spider. Fate intervened and spawned Skarr, who you were actually looking for.
To me, intent is everything. Others might not agree, but it seems to me like you did right by Anthriss.

I tamed Anthriss the other day since he was just sitting there by himself. I announced in general that he was up. I finished a daily, and i thoguht to myself, if i fly all the way back to the stables in Mount Hyjal to stable one of my 5, and Anthriss is still there, i'll try and tame him.
3-4 minutes later he was still there by himself. I wanted to try to attempt for the challenge, jumped in lava and it was pretty simple. Unfortunately I didn't like the model at all so I ended up abandoning him.
Dont feel bad, Skarr > Anthriss Skarr is a much harder tame too

You did nothing wrong. By my creed, if the others fail, its a fair shot and open game to anyone else. If they go out of their way to MAKE you fail, thats a different story, however.
But anyway, you did nothing wrong. Just like I think I did nothing wrong when I've killed Anthriss on my hunter a few times because no one from either faction wanted him and I'd rather have a hunter who can honor him kill him than some random pally/dk doing it for the lulz.

^I do that with the STV 'spirits' lol, if i cant tame em and no one else wants them then i save them from some noob thats like 'oh hai i wants loots im gonna kill u' XD
And yea, you sat and watched them constantly fail and you intervened when people started trying to KILL them so you saved them from a terrible lulz death which woulda left all the hunters without a pet

So, do Skarr's hairballs look like steel wool, or what?Boven wrote:It really was Skarr, sitting there on his floating rock, contemplating the meaning of life, or hairballs, or whatever.

Given that my take on him is that he's living stone, I suspect they'd look like bezoars, really.
Or little hematite spheres, one.

In Harry Potter, they CAN cure poison!
Not that I have read Harry Potter to know this. I just...heard from somewhere, I swear.
