Character Customizations: Would you share yours?

Unread post by Sigrah »

The title pretty much says it all. What brought this topic up? In a nutshell, my girlfriend was playing SWTOR last night and was grouped with someone that liked the look my g/f had going for her Sith Assassin and asked my g/f if she would give out the customization numbers she used to get it so that this person could copy it for one of their toons. Well, my g/f takes pride in coming up with a given look for her toons, so she told this person no and that they should take the time to come up with their own look instead. This led to about 20 mins of this person whining and begging in whispers, then eventually led to her logging into our guild’s vent and yelling at my g/f for the info. On the plus side, the vent yelling lasted all of 20 seconds because the vent owner was on and quickly kicked this person out, then *reminded* the guildie that was friends with this person that vent was for guild members only and that personal issues don’t belong in guild vent period.

Anyways, in the end, the person hassling my g/f got put on ignore, the guildie that is friends with this person apologized to my g/f and everyone that was in vent at the time for the behavior of her friend, and everyone went back to doing their own thing. I also suspect the guildie told her friend to cool it because my g/f hasn’t heard from her since on other toons or anything. However, I found the whole topic idea interesting, so I thought I’d bring it up here and ask what everyone else thinks about the idea of sharing character customizations they’ve come up with.

Personally for me, customizations aren’t that big of a deal, but I am pretty guarded when it comes to character names. The main reason for this is because I like to use the same names from game to game, and keeping them to myself reduces the chances of someone else that might like it from taking it before I do. Beyond that, I don’t mind sharing info so long as it doesn’t lead to increased competition for something like a piece of loot or what not (that’s my Everquest days showing through).

Some games, yes. Like in WoW, I always share my hunter/mage's specs to help others try and improve their toons. In like, D&D, no way. I've had my moon elf cleric for years and years. There's no way I'm letting people copy him. I even modeled my Skyrim character and all my Baldur's Gate/Neverwinter Nights characters after him. I do fantasy roleplaying on forums using him. My moon elf cleric has a longer history than some of you have been alive.
Part of Dark Magics, lvl 25 Horde guild, casual, helpful, don't raid, mostly help people and hunt pets.
Part of Dynasty, lvl 25 Alliance guild, casual and hardcore (your choice, no one forces you to raid, but you can), very helpful
Come on over if interested (Runetotem US, Horde name Sarantha, Ally name Ellysetta or Valeraud)

I would certainly see the annoyance in being asked to copy a character so thoroughly in that manner. I'd probably refuse if asked like that as well. I don't play SWTOR, but I know there's a bit more to toggle with in character creation, so it would seem weird to ask for such specific details. Since I only play WoW in terms of that type of creation, it's not exactly hard to have people mimic your character's appearance even by coincidence due to the limited number of options. There's even someone out there who deliberately changed their hunter into a Vephriel clone, name/appearance/etc on some other server. That's kind of odd to me, but...*shrug*. I suppose some people just don't have much creativity of their own. I can't imagine why you wouldn't want to fiddle with the appearances yourself and find something you like rather than just mimicking another person.

I wouldnt at all. My characters on SWTOR are extremely mine. If you come up with the same thing ON YOUR OWN fine BUT I wont let you steal what I look like. Compliment me and leave it at that thank you.

I can understand her being upset over that, I wouldn't just hand someone my exact characterzitation either. On games like Aion or SWtOR, the customization is enough to make everyone unique. On WoW, however, there are so few options that it doesn't even matter.

I wouldnt say "unique" more "hard to find someone who looks like you". XD

I wouldn't have told the other person, either. I've seen a couple other night elves in WoW that looked exactly like me (it was freaky), but in something like SWTOR, there are enough options for you to find something you like. I don't like people copying me. I'm actually so weird about it that if I'm at dinner with a bunch of family members, I won't order something that someone else does. I've been trying to get over that, but it's hard. I guess I'm just weird about people copying.
