[Dire Beast]... again...

Unread post by Sukurachi »

I'm wondering, is this an on-going problem, or "working as intended"?

When I use [Dire Beast], whatever creature it spawns appears right next to the mob I'm attacking. So far, so good.

But then, the stupid thing runs back to me... THEN runs back to attack the mob I was attacking.

At first I thought maybe it was when I cast [Dire Beast] as an opener (sometimes I was opening with it), so it thought I wasn't actually attacking anything (which, technically speaking- or writing - I wasn't).

But then I noticed it was doing this even in the middle of a fight. The beast would appear, run to me, then run back to the mob to attack.

Now, when I'm CLOSE to a mob I'm attacking it's not so bad, there isn't much distance to traverse.
But I'm a Hunter, for crying out loud. We are called "Ranged DPS" for a reason.. we're not SUPPOSED to be sitting on top of a mob to attack it.

So when I'm far from my target that's precious seconds that my beast wastes on running back and forth.

Any thoughts?

There's a couple things that could be happening here. I mean, other than a bug (which is a distinct possibility).

You or your pet are using an ability that's stunning/interrupting/pausing/freezing/CCing the enemy. When this happens, the beasts are programmed to stop attacking so as not to break the CC.

You are switching targets. It would still be a bug that it doesn't just switch targets, and instead disengages and re-engages, but it's a more 'named' bug at least.

Depending on what enemy it's happening on, if it's specific enemies, the enemy may be doing something that's causing it to disengage.

I expect that 'bug' is the most likely reason here. A bit of code that says the enemy is supposed to appear beside you, and then be triggered to attack.

Well, it does it on any mob I attack... for example, while killing the pests while farming on my... er... I mean "Farmer Yoon's" farm.

The pet I normally use day-to-day doesn't have a stun ability that I'm aware of.

This "run back to daddy" effect happens the instant I actually use [Dire beast]... so like I said, the new temporary pet appears next to the mob, then runs back to me without doing anything, despite both myself and my perma-pet being in combat at that moment, then it runs back to the mob I'm attacking.

This problem doesn't seem to be relative to a dungeon or raid or group effect.. I mostly only solo.

So no one else seems to be noticing this?
It gets stranger and stranger.

Did some testing on a training dummy; found these results to be most common. Sometimes, the dire beast would do something different than the result, but these are the ones that occurred the most for each group of testing.
Hunter: Not attacking, Pet: Passive, Not attacking, Result: Dire beast spawns at dummy, runs to me, turns around after reaching me, and attacks the dummy.
Hunter: Attacking, Pet: Passive, Not attacking, Result: Dire beast spawns at dummy, runs to me, turns around after reaching me, and attacks the dummy.
Hunter: Not attacking, Pet: Passive, Attacking, Result: Dire beast spawns at dummy, and attacks without running to me.
Hunter: Attacking, Pet: Passive, Attacking, Result: Dire beast spawns at dummy, runs to me, turns around after reaching me, and attacks the dummy.
Hunter: Not attacking, Pet: Assist, Attacking, Result: Dire beast spawns at dummy, runs to me, turns around after reaching me, and attacks the dummy.
Hunter: Attacking, Pet: Assist, Attacking, Result: Dire beast spawns at dummy, and attacks without running to me.
Hunter: Not Attacking, Pet: Assist, Not attacking (Attacks after dire beast is cast), Result: Dire beast spawns at dummy, and attacks without running to me.
Hunter: Attacking, Pet: Defensive, Not attacking, Result: Dire beast spawns at dummy, and attacks without running to me.
Hunter: Attacking, Pet: Defensive, Attacking, Result: Dire beast spawns at dummy, runs to me, turns around after reaching me, and attacks the dummy, OR, Dire beast spawns at me, and then runs and attacks the Dummy (odd...)
Hunter: Not attacking, Pet: Defensive, Attacking, Result: Dire beast spawns at dummy, and attacks without running to me.
Hunter: Not attacking, Pet: Defensive, Not attacking, Result: Dire beast spawns at dummy, and attacks without running to me.

Overall, it seems that pet stance at status of attacking or not MAY be a result, but it can also be a bunch of other things.
Do you have other things attacking, like ghostiron dragonling? Could it be minipets? Perhaps lag?

well, I noticed this on hunters that didn't have the Ghostiron Dragonling, so it's probably not that.

as for stance, I almost always have my pet on [Assist].

so the cases where this has happened (which is almost always) for me:
Hunter: attacking, Pet: Assist, attacking, Result: Dire beast spawns at targeted mob location, runs back to hunter, then back to targeted mob, then starts attacking.

I'll have to try it on a targeting dummy, I guess.

I have noticed this happening more frequently than it did at the beginning of MoP.

this is STILL happening to me.

I notice it most clearly when I'm doing my farming and killing off vermin or birds.

I attack, my pet attacks, I hit [Dire Beast], and the stupid thing clearly runs right back to me before running to the mob to attack it.

This happens when I am on basic auto-attack and pretty much only using Cobra and Arcane shots, on a single mob.

It's really very frustrating to miss out on those few seconds of Dire Beast support. while the dumb thing is running back and forth.

It's not smart enough to land a full-time gig as a hunter pet, so it's doing the best it can as a part-time temp!
