Just how many dinosaurs (And other things) exist in Azeroth?

Unread post by Crotalus Horridus »

Yes, yes. I know. I'm talking about dinosaurs and other stuff again.

Anyways, after looking at Oondasta's loot table, I'm quite intrigued at how many animals are referenced and how many new animals are referenced as well. Quickly scanning through, you can spot things old things like Diemetradon, which are already in the game. Then, you see all of these things. . .
- Achillobator (Existed in real-life.)
- Hazillosaurus
- Derrodocus
- Dimorphodon(tics?) (Existed in real-life, however the spelling may prove this wrong.)
- Therapsid, which could mean more relatives of Diemetradon. (Existed in real-life.)
- Avimimus (Existed in real-life.)
- Iguanocolossus (Incorrect spelling of ''Iguanacolossus''. Existed in real-life.)
- Tyrannotitan (Existed in real-life. Possibly just an ordinary Devilsaur.)
- Gorgoraptor
- Vulcanodon (Existed in real-life.)
- Titanorex (Possibly just an ordinary Devilsaur.)
- Carnotaur (Existed in real-life.)
- Stygimolochy (Stygimoloch existed in real-life, however this is clearly a different creatures.)
So, the question is, what do these things look like and where are they? Are they still in the other untouched corners of Azeroth? Are they from another dimension? Or are they merely beasts of fable? Only time shall tell!

Oh yeah, and what's the music in the Thunder King Trailer? It sounds amazing.

I think that if we got to Zandalar and Blizzard had the time and money to do it justice, it would be chock-full of all kinds of prehistoric reptiles. In reality, if we ever get there, there'll be a bunch of raptors, devilsaurs (some with horns or back-sails if we're lucky), diemetradons, dire horns, pterosaurs and maybe stegosaurs and sauropods. Don't count on much more beyond that.

I get the impression that Zandalar is sadly destroyed, however. Hence the Zandalari invasion of Pandaria.

Though back to the items. For most I doubt they've thought any further than wanting dino-related names for the items. I doubt they have any plans to add them at all at this stage. Or if they do it'll be more a coincidence.

since raptors and devilsaurs already exist in Azeroth, they are not technically "pre-historic" are they.

Azerothians would definitely not call them prehistoric, but from our perspective, they are. I think Azerothians call them all dinosaurs, even if the name fits only superficially.

Prehistoric to us maybe but certainly not to the inhabitants of Azeroth. So, strictly speaking, in answer to the question, none. :D

Relatively speaking, ''prehistoric'' means anything that existed far beyond our time. In-game, Trolls certanely have been around for a long time, and seeing as they probably pre-date most races on Azeroth, the Dinosaurs probably pre-date a lot of other things as well. In real-life, the Coelacanth is still living. However, it is still classified as a prehistoric animal that has survived mass-extinctions.

Just because things may be prehistoric, does not mean they're dead.

Not really "beyond our time", more like "before history". History being usually defined as "past recorded in writing", a creature being prehistoric would require it to have lived - and presumably died, since "before" implies cessation - before there were people to witness it first-hand and describe it. Another point is again, perspective. Since we are writing these posts as ourselves not our characters, I'd recommend the point of view of our world - thus those creatures lived and died before humanity could witness and record them. For our characters, they wouldn't be prehistoric because they can still get eaten by them.

... I have a weird feeling this is not what this thread was supposed to be about.

Before does not always imply cessation. It can imply many things. While cessation is one thing that it can imply, ''prehistoric'' in terms of the things in WoW (And of course, in real-life) probably means that it has lived before modern times and has either died or stayed up to terms. Things such as Nautilus, Goblin Sharks, and the Coelacanth have been around before the start of recorded history, however they are still around and are still considered prehistoric.

It isn't. At all.
Considering changing the title so this derailing can be ceased once and for all.
