Dual spec worth it or no????

Unread post by zedxrgal »

I had been saving up the gold for learning cold weather flying but it's just taking forever. I decide to drop the 1k gold to dual spec my main but keep her BM specs as her primary and use MM as a instance use. Now here is where the bit of frustration came in. Having to respec my thee regular pets. So there was that frustration. Then running in MM spec for a bit I noticed that although I was pulling pretty good dps it didn't seem much higher then in BM. I'm also almost dying with every mob fight and being left with a quarter health or less. Talk about a disappointment.
What am I doing wrong?
Was this just a waste of 1k gold or should I have specked for survival??? I mean. I was not pleased one bit with the results and having to respec my pets. Seems like such a waste to me.

Any help /opinions is greatly appreciated.

IMO, it's a good thing to do. It let's me slack a bit in my BM-spec when I CBA with caring, like heroics.

For MM, you want to start every fight with a MD, or you WILL pull aggro.

Set the tank as your focus, and then use the below before every fight.
/cast Misdirect [target=focus]

I'd say that it's only useful while leveling if you're a hybrid that isn't going to just tank or just heal. As far as I know, when you're playing a pure DPS class, whatever tree you're going for is fine for doing some random instances while leveling, so it doesn't do that much for them in my opinion.

It's also a huge hassle to keep both specs' bars up to date, due to the fact that only the spec you're currently in has its bars updated while the other one will have old ranks which you'll have to change by hand.

Heh, I don't think I'm making much sense here.. *blames on the headache*

Ah, and everything I've just said applies only to pre-80. At 80 you should definitely get dual spec, no matter what class you play.

BM/MM duel specc
to me was worth buying but if you wanna fly first get that duel specc is a nice thing to have but flying in the end level zone is a lil bit better

I love that I'm dual specced on Sara. Allows me to keep my BM spec (without it I couldn't have tamed Skoll) while at the same time getting to know the other specs.

When I first specced to SV back in Naxx, I sucked at it. I told myself I had to give it longer, that a few days wasn't long enough to get used to it, and sure enough. After a few weeks I was as comfortable in it as I was in BM. Just give it time.

As for keeping the bars in both specs updated, I use uprank. It's amazing. When I log in or switch specs, it tells me what spells on my bars are outdated and asks permission to change them. (It's in the chat box, not a pop-up, so you have to be aware to check it.) With a druid, a shammy, and Sara all being dual specced, it's saved my sanity many times. It's available on curse.

I was BM/MM for a while, but went back to BM/BM as I found that being so tied the BM, I was never really able to get the most out of MM, to justify switching specs. If you have the skills (I don't) to excel at MM, then dual-spec is certainly valuable, for that, but otherwise, not so much.

However, I have been playing with the idea of a BM pvp build, which would require dual-spec anyway.

It depends. I did most of my gear gathering as BM, and only picked up duel speccing for fun. I don't find it 100% nessecary, but it really helps not having to switch out glyphs every time you want to try out a different off spec.

You also have to keep in mind that MM works a bit differently from BM. It isn't massively complicated, just different.

Ah, I've been wondering if there's any addons like that! Thanks for the tip, will download it right away. <3

I dual specced BM/MM and ended up never using the MM spec. Biggest waste of 1,000 G. I did it because I got tired of being kicked from randoms for being BM. I hate MM so much, that I just don't random anymore unless it's a guild run. They let me go as BM with a spirit beast.

I picked up dual spec a while ago just to futz around with a BM build, but I never actually used it. Recently the GM of my guild asked if I'd consider running a Survival spec for Replenishment if the raid didn't have another source. So dual spec allowed me to say yes and pick put together an SV spec, though I have yet to raid with it.

Why don't you try SV? The three specs are very different from one another. You may like SV even if MM was absolutely not for you.

On another note, I'm sorry you were treated like that. I hate hearing about elitists like that. Who the hell cares what spec you're running, as long as things get dead and the dungeon gets done?? *sigh* They have no business telling you how to play the game.

I think it's just going to take some time to get used to. I played for a bit on MM spec today (5/23) and felt I may be starting to get a little tiny bit used to it and what's the right and wrong things to do. I pull aggro like mad now even against a DK and strong classes like that. Keep trying what Saturo suggested for that but again it's not coming quickly to me. But maybe with time I'll get the hang of it. Making more mistakes then anything but at least I'm trying. Not convinced it wasn't a waste but keeping an open mind.

For MM hunters, Glyph of Feign Death is a pretty good thing. If you have serious problems, consider using it whenever it's off the CD.

If nothing else, at least you're giving it a good shot. You'll be better able to say if you like it or not when you've played it a while.

Related to this, I started running heroics as BM again. My main spec has been SV since Naxx days, so I really had lost the groove. Well last night, I found it again. :D Feels great to get that "feel" back, where your fingers just fire the right shots, you know? I have to say, I'm glad that I know two of the hunter specs that well.

Nothing to be sorry about. I'm sure I'm not the only BM hunter that has run across stuff like this. I'm not a min/max... I play to enjoy the game. I've noticed that since Lich, there are very few people that play like that. Hate to see what happens in Cat.
