Puppy!
Watch out. Puppies are a pain in the neck. They're so adorable and sweet (when they're not teething) that it makes up for it, though.
I've met two mini poodles before - both very nice dogs.

Poodles are great! I have a dwarf poodle myself, slightly bigger than a mini. They bark a lot in my experience, but they are VERY quick learners, and so cute and huggable that they're allowed to bark a little. ^^
I also exist on DeviantArt.

Re: I'm getting a puppy!
I pretty much know that Poodles are by far the cutest dog in the world and they can learn training pretty easy which is the reason I'm getting a mini Poodle puppy next month
Re: I'm getting a puppy!
Please buy your puppy from a responsible breeder and NOT from a pet store or someone who breeds them as a "hobby" (which usually means to make money.) if you don't know about where pet store puppies come from please Google puppy mill or puppy farm. I won't go into the horrors of these places but you stand a good chance of getting a puppy who is not healthy or has problems that come from bad breeding. Back yard (hobby) breeders are just as bad since money is their only interest and not in breeding the best healthiest puppy possible.
That said, I hope you enjoy your puppy. They are a lot of work, but they are a lifetime investment so they are worth it...even when they eat your best shoes...

Re: I'm getting a puppy!
Not ALL pet stores buy from puppy mills and not all home breeders are bad. Before buying ANY pet do your research.
If possible adopt over purchasing as you could be saving that animals life.
Best of luck with your puppy.

We got our golden from a home breeder, but she really knew what she was doing. O.O She talked at us for hours about the health records of both parents, who were both showdogs with no cancer problems. She was breeding for beauty and health. Very good one.

There is a vast difference between someone who breeds dogs because they love them - like the woman who bred your golden, Lupis -- and people who breed dogs to make money. Those are backyard breeders. They aren't interested where the dog goes, they don't ask you questions and most hate it if you ask them any questions. Many of the pups they sell have chronic health issues due to them not making sure the parents are healthy. The parent dogs are bred until they don't produce any more and then end up at the shelter or in rescue if they are lucky.
zedxrgal, if there is a pet store that had pups that are not from a mill or back yard breeder I have yet to see them. Reputable breeders do NOT sell their puppies to pet stores! All the big chains buy from mills with the dogs usually processed through Hunte Corporation, which masquerades as a business who loves puppies but the reality is quite different. http://www.petstorecruelty.org/Hunte%20Corp.htm Any dog in a pet store, by law, must have a notice saying where they are from. You will see all the big puppy mill states listed: PA, MO, OH, AK, OK, although there are mills now in every state as they have very low overhead (poor food/no vet care) and very high profits.
How do I know all this? I rescue dogs myself and work with other rescues. Last month I made a tour of the southern part of my state and hit all the pet stores to check conditions and if they had the information on where the puppy came from prominently displayed. 100% of the 80 or so stores I visited sold mill puppies.
If you love dogs, educate yourselves about mills and where that adorable puppy in the window actually comes from. And anyone who offers to ship a puppy to you is running a mill. They have some very nice sites, but it's all perfume on the pig. Shipping is very dangerous for any animal let alone a puppy.
Rescue if you can, many rescues have a dog/puppy that might appeal to you. Check out the dogs that are available at Petfinder: http://www.petfinder.com/index.html
If you buy from a breeder make sure they are concerned about who they puppy goes home with.
Best of luck finding the puppy of your dreams. They are such fun.

Re: I'm getting a puppy!
Then maybe you should visit California some time. We have some of the strictest laws in the nation here even a law banning owners from selling puppies and kittens under eight weeks old. The regulations for shipping a dog into the state have tripled and there are laws against obtaining puppies from puppy mills. The laws have become so strict that 98% of the pet stores here do not even sell puppies or kittens anymore because of the paperwork required. And with the new laws about the housing requirements on for sale animals it's also not feasible. So as far as CA is concerned it's not "worth it" if a store wants to be shady and sell puppies and kittens at this point. The ones who are left that do, have tons of paperwork on the dogs and charge an extremely high price of what they've had to go through to get it.Wisunka wrote:zedxrgal, if there is a pet store that had pups that are not from a mill or back yard breeder I have yet to see them. Same for backyard breeders here to. The laws now are basically covering all dogs /cats for sale instead of just targeting pet stores. Not to long ago a woman was thrown in jail for selling papered puppies that were under 8 weeks old and she paid high fines on each animal. I'm not saying it doesn't happen but at least here in CA they're working heavily towards stopping it.
That's why I said not ALL pet stores buy from puppy mills or shitty backyard breeders.

That does not in any way stop backyard breeders. And yes, a reputable breeder will not sell to a pet store. If the dogs at the pet store are not from a puppy mill or backyard breeder then they are usually there with a rescue or adoption group.(Like Petco or Petsmart)zedxrgal wrote:Same for backyard breeders here to. And those laws do not prevent backyard breeders, that doesn't have much to do with it really.
A reputable breeder does not breed for money, they put more money into the dogs than they make off selling them, they do all kinds of health tests, and no I do not mean vet check ups. Most tests cost over 100 dollars each. Their dogs are pedigreed and they are aware of their dogs heritage, they know what health problems dogs in the past have had. They will not breed a dog with a poor temperament, their dogs are not bred just because they make good family dogs. Their dogs are titled to prove they can preform, and that the owner is dedicated to their dogs. The dogs are up to breed standards, and they do not breed frequantly.

I wish you the best of luck with your puppy, I myself have a Toy Poodle (The smallest size out of the 3, Toy, Miniature, Standard, and other names are usually ones put on the dog to make them seem "special" like how backyard breeders call pit bulls "blue nose" so they can make more money off the dogs)
Be patient with him/her, puppies will chew. If you get a puppy that doesn't chew consider yourself very VERY lucky.
